Don’t Get Your Cranberry Sauce Out Of A Can (Homemade Cranberry Sauce Is Way Better!)

Two reasons not to get your cranberry sauce out of a can:

  1. It might contain Bisphenol A (Other wise known as BPA), which is a known carcinogen that has been proven to cause birth defects, cancers, and neurological disorders. This substance isn’t banned in the United States but is in Canada. We must speak up by voting with our dollars. We should only support companies that eliminate BPA from their can production so government supported BIG FOOD companies will realize we won’t stand for this toxic junk!
  2. It will most definitely contain too much sugar and probably the worst kind of sugar that is man made, genetically modified and toxic to your body. The majority of canned cranberry products contain GMO sugar beets, GMO high fructose corn syrup, GMO corn syrup, etc. Just check out the label for Ocean Spray Jellied or Sauce (it’s the same for both).

So what am I going to put cranberry sauce on this Thanksgiving?  Organic Turkey, of course. More on how to choose the best turkey here.

If you know someone who still buys the can cranberry stuff or supporting Ocean Spray, please share this post with them, I know they will love this recipe.

Xo,
Food Babe

P.S. This is a great recipe to make in advance, so you are not rushing around on turkey day.

  1. Will be giving this recipe a try this Thanksgiving!

p.s. Want to give thanks to Food Babe for keeping GMO crops out of our kitchen and off our plates.

    Best health always,

  2. Ok i’m making this tonight but don’t have pineapples, any other substitutes? Also, i’m using my essential oils, Orange, Ginger and Cinnamon, can’t wait to try this. Thanks!!!

  3. I just made this last night in preparation for Thursday and it is AMAZING. Hands down the best cranberry sauce I’ve ever had. Thank you for sharing it and Happy Thanksgiving!

  4. So I just made this but it doesn’t look anything like your picture… the cranberries are all still whole.. kinda like a cranberry soup.. should i put it in a blender?? I suck at cooking!!!!!

  5. Vani – Have you ever tried to can or freeze your cranberry sauce? I bought way, way too many cranberries and was wondering if I could make the extra sauce into homemade gifts for Christmas. Thanks for the recipe! It’s absolutely delicious!!

    1. Yep, just grate it straight into the pot. I used more of both ginger and orange zest. We going to use this on oatmeal, as well

  6. This recipe is phenomenal! I will never serve cranberry sauce from a can ever again. I added a shot of Disoronno in place of some of the sugar and oh my gosh! Heaven.

  7. I used coconut palm sugar and it turned it brown! Afraid no one is going to want to try this at thanksgiving dinner!

  8. Just made this for Thanksgiving, halved the recipe. KID APPROVED!!! I’m so happy the kids like this- thank you:):):)
btw- tried to make it 5 star but it wouldn’t let me – it’s not a 4 star, it’s 5

  9. I made this for Thanksgiving and it turned out pretty good! Definitely WAY better than out of the can. However, it was a little bitter and tart in my opinion, maybe too much ginger, so I added about a quarter cup of sugar. Then it was delicious. Even my husband who was totally convinced that he hated cranberry sauce liked it! Very fresh and flavorful, will be making again next year!

  10. Vani, can you take on the canned foods industry and get the BPA out of our canned foods? I am hoping that you are as successful as you have been with the BHT issue.

  11. Unless the cans say BPA free, they probably aren’t. Manufacturers will always advertise it when they do something they think will increase sales. I think pretty much all canned goods made in the US contain BPA in the linings. It’s also in the lids of glass jars.

For things like tomatoes, most stores have European brands like Cento or La Valle.
Europe is much more restrictive on how much BPA is allowed. They don’t completely ban all BPA but their limits are down to almost trace levels. The insides of the European canned goods will usually be tinned or copper plated. US brands like Hunts have plastic linings. As soon as you see plastic, think phthalates of which BPA is one of the worst.

So buy products in glass jars if you can. You will be subjecting yourself to less BPA. Limit or eliminate canned goods if you can unless they say BPA free on the product.

  12. i used a 12 oz bag and halved everything else. I used a pinch of ginger powder because I am lazy. I did use a real pineapple. So… my family does not do chunky. I attempted to purée this with a hand blender. That was by far the messiest experience ever. After that epic fail I put it in a vitamix and voila perfect. I have about 2.5 c more than we will ever use. I think it will be good on pancakes though!

  13. Can you make the cranberry sauce without orange juice and zest (sensitivity)? If not, is there something else I can use instead. I love cranberry sauce but all recipes I clue orange juice.

    Thanks
