What’s The Best Airline for Health?

I’m sitting here in my kitchen on this lovely Saturday morning (day 2 of a juice fast…) I have a lot to do today in terms of goals I’d like to accomplish – do some yoga, find some Harmless Harvest Raw Coconut Water, and laundry – lots and lots of laundry… but all I can do is day dream about our next trip.

We finally booked our next adventure and I’m crazy excited about the plans.  My best friend Nicole is going to Thailand to do her yoga teacher certification and we are going there to visit her as well as do some exploring of our own and to celebrate our wedding anniversary!  We are so proud and excited about her decision and bravery to leave her life and family here to pursue her dreams. In less than a month – I’ll be doing yoga on the beach in Koh Samui with Nicole. It’s going to be wondrous!

I’d like to share my experience on Singapore Airlines, which we will be taking again to get to Asia.  Singapore Airlines is quite an extraordinary airline for the healthy traveler like myself and if you ever get the opportunity to choose between them and the rest – choose Singapore everytime, you won’t be disappointed!

Top Three Reasons why Singapore Airlines is the Healthiest Airline –

1. Best Food – You can order several types of meal choices to suit your dietary needs. Over 31 different types! Talk about satisfying the need of every picky eater. You can order everything from a straight up Japanese meal to raw vegan, which is my choice every time.

While you know that I am not a 100% raw vegan, or 100% …my choice of meals on a plane are always light not heavy.  So pre-ordering meals like the raw vegan option on Singapore Airlines is a must. Remember from my earlier post, your digestive system doesn’t do that well on foods that take a long time to digest like meat and heavy carbs because your body and internal organs are literally be compressed in the air. This is why many travelers complain about constipation and intestinal issues after flying.

These are a few snap shots of three different raw vegan meals I had while flying last Fall…. Have you ever seen this much fresh food served on an airplane before?  I certainly hadn’t until I ordered this meal. There’s two different plates of fruits and vegetables. I brought along a little healthy fat and protein combo of almond butter, raw buckwheat crackers, other nuts, an avocado and some seeds to supplement this meal with – which are all perfectly acceptable things to bring through TSA security.  These meals were perfect and sustaining regardless of the long flying times.

I also found out the company that Singapore Airlines uses in the US, cooks their meals just a few hours of each flight – so you aren’t getting something that has been frozen and thawed out or sitting around for days at a time. Knowing that they cut these fruits and vegetables the day of was reassuring, and I noticed the freshness immediately when I took a bite.

2. Space to do a Little Yoga – One trick I learned about Singapore Airlines is that you can reserve a seat that has more space in advance, giving you room to do lots of stretching and some yoga…Remember it is crucial for you to move around on a flight, you’ve got to keep your circulatory system moving!

Doing a little airplane pose on the airplane will definitely keep your joints, legs and back from getting stiff or cramped up.

3. Better Mental Health with Less Stress and More Smiles – The attitude and positivity of the Singapore Girl makes flying 20 plus hours a breeze and stress just melts off your body seeing their smiling faces the whole flight. Traveling on a plane is turbulent to say the least. Your body is being hurled through the air, upsetting your natural balance and this can make you a cranky person all while probably having to deal with crying babies, being late or other frustrations that arise. And when the airline attendant is no fun and rude, it can literally ruin your whole flight and maybe even the trip altogether.

Well this just doesn’t happen on Singapore Air, because they have Singapore Girls! Whatever training these women go through, I am impressed, because every single one of them I encountered on the 9 different flights I took were absolutely delightful! If any situation arose – they were quick to fix it and in the most polite way humanely possible. I definitely learned something about asian hospitality watching these women. They just make you smile – because they are smiling all the time no matter what happens. I’ve never experienced anything like this on any other airline I have flown ever and I’ve been to about 50 countries!

Anyone out there ever flown with Singapore Airlines?  What did you think?  Do other airlines you’ve experienced even come close to this?  I’d love to hear your travel war stories.

I can’t even imagine was business class or first class on this airline would be like – especially after economy feeling like most first class flights here in the United States! A girl can dream…

  1. This airline looks amazing! I used to order the vegan meal but now always go for gluten-free. I definitely would order a raw vegan option though – I always get so messed up digestion wise when flying! Lately I’ve been packing lots of nuts/dried fruit as snacks but even those seem to leave me bloated and uncomfortable!

    1. And… I think it is crazy seeing women wearing jeans (unless they are stretchy) on the plane! I can’t even imagine!

  2. Hi, Food Babe! Great post, I have actually flown with Singapore airlines and their hospitality definitely did not go unnoticed! Their outfits rock too! 🙂

Anyway, I wanted to ask you if you had any healthy tips on trimming down the waist / butt (yes, even the butt) area. I have a formal coming up on April 13th, and I really want to look good in my dress! I know some people had mentioned a detox (ice cold water, lemon, cayenne pepper, and real maple syrup) but I am worried that I won’t be able to focus on school / work as a result. Additionally, if you happen to know any day-of tricks to make my tummy look flatter?

Really appreciate all that you do for your followers. Thanks in advance!

    1. Unfortunately – there’s not much you can do in a specific area to spot reduce, especially in that short amount of time. But one thing you can do to lose some water weight is to eat lots of raw vegetables (think cucumbers, greens, asparagus, and celery), reduce the amount of sodium you have in your diet, and drink dandelion tea every day. Also you could try a fresh vegetable juice fast for a day or two before. Good Luck!

  3. I fly SIA all the time (last time just two days ago) and have to agree they are the best. But then again I’m Singaporean and could be biased. Lol! Travel on business and they address you by name every single time and remember your orders and preferences. The stewardess in green is a Leading Stewardess. Oh and if you ever want a recipe of something you had on board, just ask and they’ll get it for you!

  4. Singapore Airlines is healthy… except if you’re a kid. You should have seen the junk-filled meal they served my then three year old! I didn’t let her eat it… I just let her eat some of my adult meal. They gave her a hamburger, fries, and a bunch of candy. I didn’t know about this raw vegan option. I will look into it for the next time I fly!

  5. I have never flown Singapore, but this year I flew with Korean Airlines for the first time and I was very impressed with the food, cleanliness and hospitality. I think I ordered the vegan meal, and what I got was a colorful tray of fresh fruit and steamed veggies, beautifully prepared. Not a hint of oil or salt.
All-raw makes me gassy (and flying makes me gassy to begin with) so I was delighted by this meal, though next time I will bring some nut butter to round it out.

  6. I live in Singapore now, so I fly Singapore Airlines most of the time. I also fly Thai Airways. Both are wonderful. It seems they compete directly with each other to be the best in SE Asia, so both give excellent service and serve amazing food. Thai Airways has a bit more flexibility in their frequent flyer miles policy. You can use miles on any available seat. Singapore Airways is great for the reasons you mentioned.

  7. I have not flown SIA, but growing up in Asia, I got to fly on Korean Airlines and several other Asian airlines which were all such a step above every American airline I’ve experienced. I feel like the view of hospitality is entirely different and they were all a joy to fly on, as opposed to some cross-country US flights that have made me feel like a nuisance instead of a valued customer. Appreciate all you are doing and thank you for sharing your experiences!

  8. Glad to hear that TSA did not take your almond butter. They took mine!! St. Louis airport! Along with raw mock tuna I drove 40 minutes to get for my trip! Denver took it also!! JERKS!!

  9. I would like to say thank you for taking the time and posting your discoveries and research to inform us the public. I suffer from a genetic auto-immune disorder and bad knees, so eating healthy and workout is essential. I have managed to control flares and rarely take prescribed medication in a year due to similar stuff you do here on your site, and my own regiment. With lots of research and my own routine when I travel, which I do easily 10 times a year abroad, Airlines like Singapore, Air Tahiti, Qantas, British Airways, Cathay, Emirates, and JAL, do very well to cater to your needs. Having a good attitude and smile brings forth more smiles when traveling. I have heard FIJI air and Eva Air are very compliant to vegetarian and special request for no extra costs, as well. I also bring chlorophyll with me on my plane ride to help with dehydration, there are pill versions but I found liquid form was better for me. I also do my own trail mix of dry fruits and nuts and seeds. I also where “nufoot” slippers ( i’m sure there may be others like it) which are thin, easy to wash by hand, great to stretch and I where it over a cashmere silk sock to put in my sneakers or boots. If they say take the shoes off for security, your socks do not get dirty.

  10. I travel frequently and agree that Singapore Airlines food is great. I always go for the vegetarian option and alway interested in what I will be served from ratatouille to vege curry they really do a fantastic job. I used to dread airplane meals but now look forward to them.

  11. It always amazes me how conscious other countries are compared to America. Especially when it comes to children, I love flying to Asia and recently used Eva airlines and they also offered a raw veggie meal ( that was FAR BEYOND any American airline). I have to do my yoga too !! It will be cool to see a yoga studio or other play areas for kids on future airplanes
