Homemade Organic Luxurious Body Scrub

So you are making your own nut milk now right? Well I hope so, considering carcinogens are often found in processed milk products. I make almond and/or coconut milk every week to make parfait porridge and my freezer has just been overfilled with dried pulp, dying for me to come up with ways to use it. I’ve got a few pulp recipes now that I will be sharing, but I had to share my favorite one first.

Last month, as you may remember, I was traveling in Asia. One of the wonderful aspects of being in Asia is getting to experience a lot of spa treatments on the cheap. My most memorable spa treatment was in Borneo, Malaysia, which inspired this organic body scrub that smells incredible and so simple to make.

My husband and I enjoyed a body scrub made from coconut one afternoon after a long day of diving in Sipadan (one of the world’s best dive spots). This scrub left our skin feeling incredibly soft, so soft that we still enjoyed our renewed skin after we got back home for a few days. Daydreaming about this, I decided to develop a similar scrub that I wouldn’t have to travel all the way to Borneo for! Talk about bringing the vacation back home and to all of you 🙂

Reusing pulp and adding a few other ingredients can save you some major money from buying expensive exfoliating scrubs at the store. I love make-it-yourself beauty products, don’t you?

  1. I’ve been making your parfait porridge for breakfast many days. I add a spoonful of the leftover almond pulp on top of the porridge (along with some chia seeds). I’ve also adding some of the almond pulp when making either muffins or cookies.

  2. What an awesome idea! I’ve been making my own nut milks at home since I got a vitamix about a year ago, and i always save the pulp but never *really* know what to sue it for. One of my dogs absolutely adores almond pulp so if she’s being picky I’ll sprinkle it on her food, but that’s basically the extent of what I’ve used it for. haha. Trying this out tomorrow! Yay!

    1. That’s a good tip – I’ll have to tell all my dog lover friends about this one 🙂

  3. What an awesome idea! When I was younger my mother used to put mayo and egg in my hair but that’s about it! LOL. Don’t know what it did…….

    What fabulous pictures:-)

    1. Thank you Laura! I could scuba dive for hours and hours if I could have enough oxygen 🙂

    2. I think that’s what people used to do for a homemade hair conditioner. I’ve also heard of people using used coffee grounds from their coffee maker as an impromptu exfoliant. I guess that could work as long as you don’t mind smelling like coffee 😛

  4. Fantastic. I’m going to try this as almonds are ‘my thing’ right now. I love the addition of course sea salt. We have a huge stock of it, which I use for daily neti pots. Do you think there would be a benefit from adding some coconut oil to this scrub?

    1. Sure – you could definitely sub coconut oil for the olive oil. Since coconut oil can be a little more expensive than olive oil, I used olive oil instead.

  5. This is a great idea and I would really like to make this, but I was wondering if the scrub gets stuck in the drain if you use it in the shower. It seems like the pulp would eventually build up and create a problem.

    1. mmmmm… I haven’t been using it long enough to find out…it goes down the drain just fine for now 🙂

    2. There are little baskets you can purchase for your drains (like a plug with holes in it) that are great at keeping things out of the drain, including hair! Just make sure you empty it regularly 🙂

  6. This looks great! If you don’t mind me asking, what else do you do for your skincare regime, because it is amazing!

  7. Hi Food Babe. After making almond milk do I need to do anything with the leftover almond pulp to prepare it for later use? Or do I just throw the almond pulp into a ziplock bag for later use.

    Thank you!

    1. Hi Gabrielle – Just throw it in a bag and refrigerate or freeze…

  8. I exfoliate my lips with a mixture of olive oil and sugar (whatever kind you want! It’s about the granules.) You only need a tiny container and judge for yourself how much of each. I think there should be plenty of sugar. then use a toothbrush to (lightly) scrub your lips! All natural and tastes good.

  9. You can make almond flour from the almond pulp! All you do is spread the almond pulp on parchment paper on a baking sheet and put in the oven at a low temp of about 150 degrees for roughly 2-3 hours to dry it out. Once it’s dry put it in a blender or food processor to grind and ta-da it’s almond flour!

Love the recipe for body scrub too, going to try it now! Thanks!

  10. Hey there! Love love love this idea!!!! Thanks for sharing! Do you have to dehydrate the pulp first or can I use it right after we make our oil? Just curious if it keeps fresh and if we are losing any of the “good stuff” by drying? Thank You again!! -Crystal 🙂
