Why is this so important?

As many people may know, our food is missing a very important label – one that President Obama, the FDA, and the USDA have made a concerted effort to deny us from having.

This label is for foods containing genetically modified organisms (GMOs), which are in 90% of our processed food. GMOs are foods biologically manufactured in laboratories – injected with new DNA, viruses, herbicides, insecticides and/or other chemicals – to be resistant to synthetic chemicals and are completely different than hybridizing techniques allowed by nature.

GMOs receive patents by the U.S. Patent Office because they have been deemed to be unique and different. GMO’s have not been tested for long-term impacts on human health, they increase costs for family farmers, and they require more chemicals to grow that can get into our water and air.

In the last 15 years, since GMOs were introduced into our food supply – an increase of more than 500 million pounds of herbicide and 19 million pounds of the pesticide “Roundup” have been sprayed on our crops and into our environment – The same type of chemicals that the President Cancer’s Panel has determined is the reason why 41% of us will experience cancer in our lifetime.

Over 60 countries around the world require GMOs to be labeled or regulated. The U.S.A. does not. Despite polls consistently showing that more than 90% of the population want GMOs to be labeled, our leaders in Washington refuse to acknowledge this truth and will not implement mandatory GMO-labeling at the federal level.

Lucky for us – we don’t have to wait for Washington – the States can do this on their own – and I believe this is the only way we will get Washington to wake up to a federal mandate.

This is why it’s extremely important – even if you aren’t from North Carolina – to share, like, and tweet this post. If we label it here in North Carolina…there a much better chance that your state will be labeled too.

As you know – this issue is near and dear to my heart – and evident in the fact that I used my position as an elected delegate to protest in front of the Secretary of the USDA Tom Vilsack during the Democratic National Convention last fall.

We need EVERY SINGLE SIGNATURE to make this happen.

And if you have another minute – please leave me a comment below and tell me why this issue is important to you…I want to know who you are… because I’ll be contacting you soon for an important event.

  1. So fantastic! New Mexico has proposed legislation for this session to label GMOs, too! We’re excited over here! I’ll be keeping an eye on this!

  2. I believe in the cause! I am in the beginning stages of cutting out processed foods and really appreciate your knowledge and information provided on your blog. Thank you for the good work!

  3. I do so much research about the things I put into my body… the idea of NOT knowing if something has GMO’s in it is terrifying. Even IF the links between GMOs and cancer become disproven, even IF the scientists find a way to make it safe… mother nature did not intend for it. I deserve – no i DEMAND – to be given the chance to make the choice between GMO-laden foods or natural, organic, whole REAL foods that wont potentially give me cancer.

  4. This is all very exciting! I am also trying to learn more about GMO’s and cut out as much processed foods from my diet as I can. I think it’s our right to know what’s in our food! Thank you for all that you do to further this cause.

  5. Good News for North Carolina I hope it passes. I live and Alabama and would love to see the same thing happening here!

  6. I am VERY passionate about GMOS, that my 2 1/2yr old daughter now knows the chant, “NO-NO-GMOS” and When anyone tries to give her food when I am not looking,(doesn’t happen too often) she is taught to ask them if it has GMOS in it!!
I am in Washington State where we are closer each day to making it happen here!!

  7. I TRY TO EAT ONLY WHAT I CALL “GODS FOODS”
AS NEAR TO NATURAL AS POSSIBLE. NOT GROWN IN MONSANTO CHEMICALS OR SPRAYED WITH THEM. DO NOT BUY PROCESSED FOODS AND BEWARE OF THE HIGHLY ADVERTISED FOODS. EAT LESS AND EAT NATURAL FOODS AND WE WILL ALL BE BETTER OFF. IF YOUR BODY IS STORING FAT, YOU ARE EATING FOOD IT DOES NOT NEED SO YOU ARE STORING GARBAGE ALL OVER YOUR BODY AND WONDERING WHY YOU FEEL SLUGGISH AND TIRED AND ACHE IN YOUR JOINTS. AUNT WANDA

  8. I just signed the petition and will spread the word to others. Keep fighting the good fight, Food Babe! Thanks for all you do!!

  9. Worked on California’s Prop 37 last year and it is thrilling to realize how we did “win” when I see the many states now energized to fight for labeling and more despite $46 million spent to fight us with lies and distortions. The Institute for Responsible Technology has excellent resources and Ronnie Cummings should win a Nobel for his dedication to protecting our food and our environment. Engage store managers, school boards, your friends. Write local media and your elected representatives.

If you want to go further into the FDA marriage with Michael Taylor, ex Monsanto attorney, or into the biology of genetic modification, there’s a fascinating journey ahead…but don’t get ahead of the message, a simple clear statement: We have a right to know what’s in our food! Good luck!

  10. I am so excited about the work you are doing … Raising 2 young girls I am increasingly concerned about what I’m putting in and on their bodies.

We live in CA and were disappointed that prop 37 didn’t make it through this time … But, I am hopeful that its just a matter of time!!

  11. Go FoodBabe!! Can you believe we have to fight for this? Makes me crazy…. I tweeted this and hope you (we) get tons of support.

  12. Hi Food Babe! Thank you for your activism for GMO labeling. I don’t live in North Carolina, but I live in TX, and I hope that there will be a proposal for GMO labeling in my state soon as well. I really appreciate all that you do to try to improve our food labeling and safety…I wish there were more people like you 🙂

  13. My husband and I both signed the petition….we deserve the right to know what’s in our food! Keep up the good work and thanks for everything you do!

  14. GOOD LUCK! I hope that North Carolina can be the start of a nation-wide ban. I would very much like to see GMOs labeled. It is nice to see stamps from the non-GMO project on some food items, but the rest leave me wondering and doubting when maybe I should be concerned and maybe not, who knows because it’s not labeled?

  15. I truly appreciate your dedication to this cause. My son is almost 2 years old, and since I was pregnant, I have been on the journey of healthy eating. It is devastating to think that there are so many Americans out there who have no clue about what they are actually eating. Your blog is one of the most informative and eye opening ones that I have seen. I really admire your passion and vigilence to not give up on this issue. It is also very encouraging in that you share your practices, and that you do in fact practice what you preach. I’m sure there are several more hurdles to come before we actually get a label. I believe that you are right in that once one state begins to label GMOs they will all follow. I currently live in Nevada, and I hope that we will follow in North Carolina’s footsteps as they pave the way to labeling GMOs. It will be a timely process, but the benefits are endless and of course, completely worth it. Thank you again for not giving up. I hope that my son will grow up in a country that labels GMOs, and hopefully one day stops using them altogether. I support you 100%! Good luck and God Bless.

  16. Done. Thank you for making this a priority in our state. The federal government will not wake up to this, despite the king allowing his wife and his cronies to control our food supply. It must be done at the state level. God help us make NC the first in a long line of states that call the junk what it is… JUNK!!

  17. ah yes, “genital baldness”. It just rolls off the tongue. Good to know McDonalds decided to use a non-GM product (probably the first EVER in their chain)… but only “until it is proven that no Monsanto pickles were sold into the North American market”. Well, of course. We wouldn’t want McDonalds to offer anything ‘healthy’ (icky!!) or ‘non-GM’ (how dare them?!?!?).

  18. Although funny, you DO realize that this is satire and not true, don’t you? A Google search of ‘The Lapine’ even states that it is Canada’s best satirical newspaper…….

Lapine is a fictional language spoken by fictional rabbits in the novel Watership Down; this is where this “newspaper” gets its name from.

The truth about GMO’s is bad enough in reality… we don’t need to add fiction to it.

  19. I try all the time to watch carefully what I give my family, including my four year old son. I breaks my heart to see what we’ve been eating without realizing all these years and what it does to your body. Thank you for all you do. I don’t live it NC, but I have family there and will pass it along.

  20. I just shared the petition with my neighborhood and county Facebook groups in Raeford!! It’s being received well!!

  21. I am a NC resident and had heard nothing about this yet. Thank you so much for sharing this very important action item!! Done! And I am going to get everyone I can think of to sign it as well. It is disgusting to me how adulterated and dangerous our food supply has become! I am currently in the education and cutting out stage, and I often tell my family and friends these days, “I just don’t know what to eat any more.” My finances are tight, but I am adding more and more organic foods each week, trying to find a balance that will fit into my budget. I feel blessed to have stumbled upon your blog. Keep up the great work, Food Babe!!

  22. Bet some watered down Federal labeling law that is worthless is enacted… It will most probably be based on some idiot scale of percentages or trace elements present by volume… Crap… GMO’s should be outlawed by each individual state.. Outlawed from growing period…

  23. Oh, this petition was only for NC residents apparently. Well, it’s already signed and can’t hurt, can it?

  24. Done! Let me know how I can support you and how I can get my other health coach friends to help you get the word out. Thanks!

  25. This is so important to me and it should be to everyone! We have the right to know what’s in our food and how it’s made! Our country is sick and people don’t even stop to think that it’s because of the food we are consuming! I hope to see a future where these things are labeled and eventually illegal to genetically modify our food! You rock Food Babe! You inspire me!

  26. I care very much about what goes into my body and am always researching the foods that I eat! I would love to see it pass in North Carolina and hopefully other states would follow. Thank you so much for all the work and research you do for all of your readers and yourself of course!

  27. I don’t live in NC, but my dad does, and I am going to be sharing this with him and I know he will share it with everyone that he knows there to bring awareness to the issue! Thank you for all that you do! Love this blog and all the information and recipes that you share!!

      1. You are very welcome!! I am going to be in North Carolina in April to visit my dad, maybe I will run into you:-) I told him to check out some Farmers Markets and local organic restaurants for us!

  28. It will be a hard fight to get GMO labeling in the Old North State, especially now that big business interests have taken control of the governorship and both houses of the state legislature. Hard, but not impossible! I’m glad to see this issue emerge and spread across the nation, even here in backward old NC. I’m in.

  29. I’m so excited for NC that they have concerned citizens to fight for labeling of GMOs. I’m from central Illinois and we have a campaign titled “Let Me Decide” which was launched in the fall to get people aware of GMO in our foods. A field organizer from Food and Water Watch (FWW) spent couple of months in town to help our local coordinator get the campaign off ground. We caught the attention of one of our state legistrator and he is going to introduce a bill this spring for the State of Illinois to label GMO containing foods.

If enough states join in on labeling of GMOs, the opposition will not be able to stop all of us.

You might want to contact your regional FWW office to see if they can help with your cause. Good luck.

  30. Why do our local and national leaders make this harder than it really is? Thank you for you continued hard work and efforts! Cyndie

  31. I signed it because as a pharmacist I believe that way too many of the diseases we are trying to fight in this country can be overcome by healthy eating and prevention. Our government should be acting to protect us, but sadly, they are not. Thanks for all the good work you do!

  32. I don’t live in North Carolina but I am hoping to have the opportunity to sign a petition in Michigan someday soon. I just received an email from NoGMO4Michigan today! I am so excited! I’ve been waiting since November to be contacted by a local group and it has finally happened. I can’t wait to get out there and be involved. I have yet to find anyone in my area that knows or even cares about what GMO’s are doing to our lives! You are such an inspiration to me and many others! Thank you for everything you do!

  33. Signed! Thank you for your continued efforts towards an extremely important cause! In 2012 we took the final steps to cutting out processed foods (much thanks to your blog and 100 days of real food) and have felt so much healthier and happier knowing what we put in our body!! Made it through fall/winter of 2012 without a single cold! Coming from a LONG family history if cancer, I think it is SO important to do everything in my power to prevent it…beginning with what I eat (and don’t eat). Knowing that so many processed foods in the US include GMOs is scary, the fact they don’t have to disclose it is even scarier!!

  34. I have lung issuses that is related to the food I eat and water I drink and also the air I breath. The Dr. says that if I can;t say the word i SHOULD NOT EAT it.

    Carolyn

  35. I really don’t understand why anyone cares about labeling GMO’s?

Yes, GMO’s are bad…BUT…since food suppliers know we hate GMO’s (most of us, anyway), they tend to label NON GMO food as “GMO FREE”. This makes consumers want to buy their product. It’s brag-worthy.

I think it’s safe to assume that if a food is GMO free, it’ll be advertised as such. So what’s the point in labeling foods “GMO INFESTED?”. Why not just assume if it’s not labeled it IS GMO and move to the next apple?

  36. I think GMO foods should be labeled. The problem is, that when they started using GMOS forcorn, the wind picked up the GMOS and dispersed them around the world. So no one can truly and honestly say “GMO-free’ anymore. They have essentially poisoned our world and we cannot go back. But labeling should be required anyways so the public can be assured that the foods we eat are from farmers making a conscious effort to not utlize or include those toxins. We should have the choice.

  37. Supporting you from Canada! We are fighting the same GMO labelling battle here. Health Canada is still reviewing the Séralini study (2012) and I’m told the results will be made publicly available once the review is complete.
