How To Find The Best Natural Mascara That Actually Works

YOUR EYEBALLS.

They are so important. We must protect them. Letting makeup filled with coal tar and petroleum that’s contaminated with carcinogens, parabens that promote aging and sagging skin, and acne causing ingredients found in airplane deicing liquid drip into your eyeballs is not the answer!

I have to be honest though, I LOVE the way my eyes look when I have makeup on, but I hate the act of putting on makeup, so I do it, grudgingly… And once I found out all the crazy toxic ingredients the makeup industry uses in many conventional products my entire perspective changed. I go days without a lot of makeup on my face unless I’m on camera or have an event. Don’t get me wrong, being on camera has its perks and its disadvantages. It allows me to spread the message of organic, real and non-GMO food living to so many more people, but it also requires heavier makeup at times – those camera lights can be harsh let me tell ya!

When I’m behind the scenes blogging or living my day to day life I wear the least amount of makeup possible – maybe a little blush and lipstain and that’s it. But when I go on camera – it’s eyeliner, eyeshadow and mascara. Mascara was the first makeup product I changed out of my makeup bag, but it took me a long time to figure it out which brands actually work.

Here’s how to find the best natural mascara that actually works.

Slide1

First, let’s talk about the ingredients in mascara you want to avoid:

  • PARABENS – Used as a preservative and is an endocrine disrupter that messes with your hormones. (Top Offenders: L’Oreal, Cover Girl, Avon, Bobbi Brown, Clinique, Maybelline, Neutrogena, Revlon, Chanel, Lancome)

  • PARFUM (a.k.a. fragrance) – Why do you need parfum on your eyes – that’s crazy. Oh it’s to cover up the smell of coal tar! This is even in some products marketed as “unscented.” Some fragrance ingredients can trigger allergies, asthma and acne, linked to cancer and neurotoxicity, and are harmful to fish and other wildlife.  (Top Offenders: Neutrogena, Lavera, Milani)

  • ALUMINUM POWDER – Considered a neurotoxin and linked to Alzheimer’s disease and other cancers. (Top Offenders: Cover Girl, Estee Lauder)

  • BHA and BHT: Used as a preservatives and is an endocrine disruptor and may cause cancer (BHA). Harmful to fish and other wildlife. (Top Offenders: Maybelline, Rimmel)

  • PROPYLENE GLYCOL:  Linked to acne, eczema, and other skin allergies. (Top Offenders: L’Oreal, Mineral Fusion, Rimmel, Avon, Maybelline)

  • COAL TAR DYES: p-phenylenediamine and colours listed as “CI” followed by a five digit number. The U.S. colour name may also be listed (e.g. “FD&C Blue No. 1″ or “Blue 1″). Potential to cause cancer and may be contaminated with heavy metals toxic to the brain. (Top Offender: Maybelline)

  • FORMALDEHYDE RELEASING PRESERVATIVES –  Look for DMDM hydantoin, diazolidinyl urea, imidazolidinyl urea, methenamine and quarternium-15. Used in a variety of cosmetics. Slowly release small amounts of formaldehyde, which causes cancer. (Top Offender: Almay)

  • RETINYL ACETATE (VITAMIN A ACETATE) – Biochemical or cellular level changes, Cancer, Developmental/reproductive toxicity, Organ system toxicity (non-reproductive) (Top Offenders: Elizabeth Arden, Almay, Revlon)

*Ingredient research provided by The Environmental Working Group and David Suzuki Foundation*

I am a firm believer that if I eat the way I do, I can avoid the impact of most of the chemicals in my surroundings, but I also want to vote with my dollars and I refuse to buy products from companies that continue to pollute the environment and our bodies with loads of toxic substances. I also don’t like the idea that something I put on my eyes can potentially cause cancer over time, cause acne, aging or disrupt my hormonal balance. That’s why I went on a search to find a clean mascara – here are the ones that make the cut that I’ve personally tried… I know there may be some other ones available, but these actually work based on my experience.

Curl Those Lashes!

Food Babe

P.S. This is my FAVORITE eyelash curler in the whole wide world (I’ve tried them all and this is the best BY FAR!)… and remember to add carrot juice to your green juice, it’s amazing for those eyelashes. When I started doing this, my eyes got brighter and lashes got longer – it’s no joke!

      1. Mine says $14.99 too. Will be getting some of this. I just ran out too.

      2. Arbonne also sells a natural mascara with no tar/parabens/mineral oil and no animal byproducts nor tested on animals.

      3. Okay, I just signed out of Amazon and now it’s saying $14.99. I have Amazon Prime which is a yearly membership for “free” shipping. Guess it’s not so free after all!

      4. Interesting! makes one think about that amazon prime ‘deal’…

      5. Looks like the Physicians Formula one is the same price either way so I’ll have to check everything I buy from now on but I’m glad this post made me realize with the prices being different!

      6. You have to uncheck the box that says ‘Amazon Prime deals only” We have prime as well. It’s good for a lot of things once you figure out how to use it (or not use it) :/

      1. I wonder how many of you who saw the higher prices are using Macs? There are trackers that pay attention to the type of computer you’re using, and if they see a Mac, the assumption is that you can afford to pay more for a product, so that’s the price they quote you. If you are curious, go to Safari Preferences, then Privacy, then look at “Cookies and other website data”. Click on “Remove All Website Data”, wait a minute to see if any more arrive, and if not, try your search again. And get ‘Ghostery’.

      2. I suspect it is the Amazon Prime deal… I was signed in, that is why it said a higher price. What a crock!! (at least I figured it out!)

      3. Logged in or out mine said $21.99…and I don’t have Amazon Prime or own a Mac! hahaha. Strange.

    1. To those saying it is a higher price: #1 clear all cookies and your cache. #2 do not use google, try duckduckgo.com instead. Now see what the price is for you.

  1. Great info! Have you heard of a Eco Bella? How do they compare? Also, have you done a piece on “safe” perfumes?

    1. I haven’t done an article on safe perfumes yet – but that’s a good idea. I stick to essential oil based scents… they are available at Whole Foods, Vitamin Shoppe and Earth Fare.

      1. Ecco Bella is a great brand and does well on the Cosmetic Database site. We sell it at our co-op and people love it. I wear it and my eyes don’t tear and smart like when I use other brands.

      2. FYI- regarding perfumes. They are ALL synthetics. If you are looking for perfume oils, then the essential oils you get from most health food stores are just that ( I call these Hippie Juice. They smell nice, but they have no health benefits at all). Even if they are listed as “therapeutic”. The essential oil industry is guided by the perfume industry. What this means, if the plant material used does not meet the guided code for that oil, then the company will add a synthetic chemical to bump it up to make it smell like the plant indicated. Here is a link on Youtube that exposes this info: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=isYbDwF5x9g
Also, believe it or not, price is an indication of purity. Pure, steam distilled, Rose Essential oil – for 5ml will cost you around $350.00. If you are spending below that, question your source.
If you are trying to avoid chemicals, then please be aware of the “essential oils” that are out there. Natural, does not always mean Natural (as FoodBabe has shown with food). Question your source. Here are some questions you can ask your EO source: where is the plant sourced? Do they use pesticides or other chemicals in the growing process? Do they practice proper harvesting and storing? Does the farmer do their own distillation or do they send to a distiller? Does the distiller have proper equipment and cleans out still after each use? (the distillation process is very precise for each plant type.) Do they test the oils? Are the testing from a 3rd party lab? What tests do they run? (typical tests are Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry) Do they check for heavy metals? Do they test each oil batch that comes in, every time?
And if you are concerned about sustainability, ask them where they stand on that.
You can check out Dr Robert Pappas site Essential Oil University. He is the main EO consultant to many EO companies.
Hope this helps people who are looking to find pure essential oils. =) It is one of my passions. =)

      1. I noticed the Ecco Bella has parabens in it. Ingredients: Purified water, carnauba wax, palmitric acid (from palm oil), clay, methylparaben, propylparaben, iron oxide. So, that’s no good.

  2. Love Tarte mascara! Picked it up at Sephora. 🙂 Would love to see a post about foundation. I’ve been wearing Bare Essentials, but I’d love to know how it compares. 🙂

    1. I used to wear Bare Essentials, until I found out they have Bismuth Oxychloride & nano-particles in their make-up. Now I wear Lemongrass Spa and LOVE it! Feels like I’m wearing nothing at all.

    1. I’ve always used Lavera as well, but unfortunately it always runs and doesn’t stay put on my lower lashes

  3. 100 percent pure is a great brand for mascara, makeup and other skin/body care products.

  4. It would be great to see a future article on homemade natural traditional means like Kohl or Kajal. 😀
The beauty industry, I feel, has contributed to many illnesses including cancer due to their choices in toxic chemicals with their loose regulations. Thank you for bringing this to attention. Many women sadly compromise beauty over health.

  5. Thank you so much for this info! Can you please share ALL of your favorite beauty products? Every since you posted that article about using safe makeup last week on facebook, I’ve really been re-thinking all of mine. It’s been eye-opening. I would love to see a post with brands and specific products you suggest. This mascara post is great…and I want more! 🙂

    1. Check out NYR Organic! Ethical, certified organic skincare from Great Britain and new to the US! Celebrating 30 years of organic excellence, Neal’s Yard Remedies mission is to encourage a more natural and holistic way of health, beauty and well being. All of our products are “certified” organic by the Soil Association of Great Britain which guarantees that each product contains the highest levels of organic ingredients. We believe in NO – NO parabens, NO synthethic fragrances, NO GMO, NO animal testing, NO silicones, NO phthalates, NO nano!

  6. Perfect timing! Mascara is the one terribly toxic makeup item still in my beauty routine. I’ve tried a couple of natural ones that were OK but ended up clumpy and flaking off by the end of the day. So I went back to my regular stuff. I’m definitely going to try one of these!

    1. toni – it took me such a long time to switch mascara because i’m super, super picky about how mascara looks and how it lasts throughout the day. if you try one of the suggestions, do try tarte! it’s a little spendy, but based on another food babe article about it, i tried a while ago, and it’s fantastic!

      1. Thanks for the advice! It’s always nice to hear from someone who has actually tried out the products. I can’t tell you how much money I’ve wasted on mascaras over the years and that was before I even realized all the toxins in products. I’m definitely picky too, and I’d rather spend more money and get something that actually works well!

  7. I love Rejuva minerals eye liner and mascara. They are reated top ten of the skin deep database, work pretty good and last about 6 hours… Their foundation its not that good because it creasses and block pores. Jane Iradale its a better choice for foundation.
Thank you Vani for all your hard work… I completly changed my BAD eating habits with your information and investigations

  8. Coastal Classic Creations makes great makeup too! I love their mascara! All their products have great ratings on EWG.org.

  9. I second the Shu Uemura eyelash curler!! Love that thing! And I too have tried LOTS of eyelash curlers. For a while you couldn’t get them or the refill pads, so I had to switch to something else. So glad to see these are available again, thank you for sharing!!! 🙂

  10. The only natural mascara I’ve tried was the Physician Formula one and I was very disappointed. It never dries so I constantly had black smudges under my eyes just from blinking.

    1. That’s the only one I’ve tried too but I like it! It doesn’t do that to me. That’s interesting!

    2. I tried the Physician’s Formula, too – 2 or 3 tubes, in fact, b/c I so much wanted to use something less toxic – but I just couldn’t do it. It ran like CRAZY! One teeny-tiny bit of moisture (like when I would yawn) and it was running all over the place. Plus it BURNED my eyes something horrible when it would start running. Finally gave up and went back to my old usual.

  11. Love.love.love Ava Anderson non toxic mascara!!!! Also, they have 3 amazing blends of essential oils to wear instead of perfume.

  12. I’m glad to see physicians formula on your approved list. That’s what I like to use.

  13. Great article. I used maybelline and rimmel for years until I had an allergic reaction to the eye makeup remover! I’ve never experienced that before but had wanted to find more natural products anyway so that pushed me over the edge. I started researching through ewg and started using physicians formula organic wear since it was the easiest to find. Glad to see it made your list! I’m still looking for good eye shadow. Any suggestions? And now I use organic baby shampoo on a q-tip to remove eye makeup before washing my face. Works great and no harsh chemicals!

  14. I love the physicians formula organic wear mascara! I started using it about 2 years ago. They have it at target, Walgreens and most retail stores. Usually it’s about $7-$8. They’ve also expanded their line and have more dramatic versions similar to “falsies.” I love that they’re not incredibly expensive, toxic or hard to find! And they work well.

For those looking for more natural perfume, I’ve been using Pacifica for almost 5 years. Their stuff is vegan, phalate free and made with essential oils and pure grain alcohol. Target has started carrying some of their stuff and its also at whole foods. I’ve purchased from their site during a 40% off sale with free shipping. They always have awesome specials and promos going on. I love their stuff!

  15. Thank you!! I’ve been looking for a non-toxic alternative and was just about to purchase Ecco Bella, but I’ll switch to Tarte, which sounds fabulous!
Also, I LOVE your blue dress in the NY Times photo-shoot! Where did you find it?

  16. Thanks for the great advice!! I just ordered
Physicians Formula Organic Wear Mascara, Jumbo Lash, Black Organics 7353
and found it for $5.48 http://www.amazon.com/Physicians-Formula-Organic-Mascara-Organics/dp/B004ID39I0/ref=lh_ni_t?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A2W5CB6NMBSHIJ

Even though I rarely wear makeup, sometimes I need to for work, so lately I have been looking for makeup that I can get that it organic. Can you suggest a brand from sephora that I can use to get my face makeup (foundation, and powder)?

  17. I sell Arbonne. You should check out long story mascara and all of our other products!!! I would love to be your independent consultant!!! All of our products are botanically based we have no mineral oils, no parabans, we are all vegan, no testing on animals etc! I would love if you would blog about Arbonne. My email is [email protected]

    Thanks!!!! Alicia B

  18. I’m curious about “Bare Minerals” eye make up, the mascara, sealer, and eyeliner but especially the mascara and sealer, how toxic are they. Please share anyone if you know anything. I haven’t visited EWG, maybe later when I have more time.

      1. thanks Bev, I wondered and since we know nothing about nano technology long term affects. . . geeeze Thanks for the info, if you hear more please post as will I.

      2. You’re welcome! We all learn from each other. BTW, besides nano-particles, Bare Minerals uses bismuth oxychloride which is a skin irritant. It’s estimated that 75% of people are allergic to it.

      3. You’re welcome. We all learn from each other. BTW, Bare Minerals also uses bismuth oxychloride, which is a skin irritant. It’s estimated that 75% of people are allergic to it. DUH, it’s a skin IRRITANT.

  19. You may also want to check this out.
The company is Pacifica and I have used a few of their products and they are really good.

Our amazing formula is infused with coconut oil and vitamin B to hydrate each lash as it lengthens, strengthens and adds volume. Apply for a natural look by day, or layer for more volume with our super plush 100% vegan brush that provides effortless coverage.

Stellar Gaze Length & Strength Mineral Mascara – Supernova (Black)

  20. I have used both Physicians Formula and Ava Anderson. The Ava Anderson mascara, to me, seems to be a lighter, less defining mascara. Physicians Formula I have used for years and also love that it is available at many retail locations. Many times you can also get their products for free as part of their rebate program on Physicians Formulas website. I love products that are both safe and affordable (or free)! http://www.physiciansformula.com/en-us/staticpage/rebate.html

  21. I just purchased the trial size Tarte mascara a week ago to try it out, and I LOVE it. It was about $6 on Amazon. I’m more picky about mascara than anything else, and it’s my favorite beauty item, so I wanted something that works well (as far as lengthening, volumizing and doesn’t clump or flake). I don’t have as much residue under my eyes from this as I did the Mary Kay I used to wear. What I’ve had a hard time finding a safe alternative is my eyeshadow. Safe and affordable, that is. I can’t spend $15 on one tiny eyeshadow color. If anyone has suggestions PLEASE let me know, I’m nearly out of what I have, and I really don’t want to buy Covergirl again.

    1. Check out Beth Terry’s book “Plastic Free” for tons of links to plastic-free products. I never knew (or thought to think, lol) how many products could contain petrochemicals! Not to mention leaching them from their containers.

Keep up the good work, Vani! Have you researched vegan shoes? I’m looking for Fair Trade Certified. Any suggestions, anyone?

  22. My sister in law works for Tarte so I’ve been lucky to get lots of samples. The mascara is my favorite. I also have the pressed powder that I use as foundation. I like it better than Bobbi Brown (it’s good just messy because its loose). Tarte lip glosses are good too but I don’t wear a lot of makeup so I use them infrequently.

  23. Thanks for this information. I, too, have been yearning for natural cosmetics — especially mascara and eyeliner and haven’t found anything suitable. Will try these recommendations. And please tell us more. I really loved and appreciated your posting about BEER too. Wow! What an eye opener.

  24. I blended activated charcoal and aloe vera gel into a paste and tried using that. Although it provided color, it was thin and did not lengthen. I’m guessing because I didn’t use any type of fibers? Has anyone tried making their own? Did it work for you and if so what did you use?

  25. I rarely wear make up, but when I do I was using Organic Wear but stopped using the product just because it was too loose I found it wouldn’t run but it sort of smudged under my eyes making my eyes look dark and droopy. I have blonde lashes and feel I need to cover them with something or my face gets lost. I was applying a chap stick and shadow. I am now excited to go to Sephora to buy the Josie Maran one I can’t wait to try it out. So Thank you for this share, because I almost closed the email before clicking the link I thought you were going to tell me of another gross food that had weird eyes in it. lol

  26. You should try 100percentpure.com. Their mascara is $18.00. And you can pronounce the ingredients. Those others listed, I’m sorry, I wouldn’t use them. They have chemical ingredients. 🙁

  27. Jane Iredale cosmetics got a 0-2 in the green great safety product rating from Ewg. Org cosmetic . http://www.janeiredale.com. Free shipping and a list of locations to purchase products in Charlotte and surrounding areas.
Yes I cringed when I replaced all my department store cosmetics but felt a load of relief knowing my hard earned money was going toward clean, safe make-up and I am happy with the products as well.

  28. Thank you for this!
I have been looking for a GMO-Free, organic mascara for a year!
    Vani, you are wonderful!

  29. I would be interested to read a comparison of 100 percent pure brand mascara to the ones you mentioned in the article. The ingredients (and the scent) of 100 percent pure is so good you’d almost want to eat it.

    1. I love the ingredients of 100% Pure, unfortunately, I don’t love the performance. I thought their mascara was too clumpy & thick. Bummer, because their ingredients are great.

  30. I love the Josie Maran mascara & have been using it regularly for a while. I was recently wondering if it would be Food Babe approved. I’m so happy that it is!! I don’t wear make up regularly but I love playing with it so I will have fun with the other recommendations 🙂 Josie Maran’s spf moisturizer is fantastic too.

  31. The scary thing is that many of the toxic ingredients in the non-approved mascara is also in our ‘foods’.

    Yuck!

  32. Have you ever tried the one from Lush? Would love to hear your review of it!

    1. I have used Lush’s, I like it. (I love almost everything I try from Lush). It stays on very well and only has about 4 ingredients including wheatgrass.

      1. Lush is awesome! I purchased a few “organic” mascaras and the minute you put your fingers near your eyes they smudge and for me they burn! Not so with the Lush brand! I love it!

  33. Perfect post for me today! I’m changing out all of my makeup to organic/natural products. What is your opinion on Origins products? I was checking out their makeup today, it is spendy…but supposedly does not contain parabens, and harmful chemicals. I haven’t heard you mention them, so I’m wondering if they are not as good as they say they are.

  34. I love Red Apple lipstick, since it does not have all those bad-for-you ingredients and it is gluten-free, which is important for me. They also make non-toxic eyeshadow which I haven’t tried yet. They have a mascara in the works. Thanks for the tip. I plan to try out the Physician’s Formula.

  35. I have been using Physicians Formula Mascara for years. I love it! It is the only mascara that I have worn that has actually caused people to compliment on how beautiful my lashes are.

  36. I am so excited to try these mascaras!! Thanks you so much. I never thought about what I was putting on my eyelashes

  37. Hi Food Babe!
Love your site & the work that you do! Thank you! A couple months ago I came across your post about cosmetics and how toxic they are and I started switching out my products for natural & organic alternatives, and I’m constantly using http://www.ewg.org/skindeep as a resource when I’m picking out new products. If it doesn’t score below a 3, I won’t buy it. So when I was looking into replacing my mascara I was surprised to find that the “Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes” mascara that you recommended scores as a 4 and the Maybelline mascara that I’ve been using scores a 3. According to the Skin Deep website the Maybelline product is less toxic?? Now I’m not sure if I should keep looking for a replacement or just stick with what I’ve been using.

    Tarte Mascara:

Thank you for all your research and hard work! I love following your posts. My husband and I can’t buy a food product without reading the label now, and that’s thanks to you! 🙂 We also switched to a plant-based diet in early 2013, around the same time that I found your website, and your work has also encouraged us to go organic, even when eating out. You make a difference!

  38. This is such a great post! I just have to say that I am a long time user and big time fan of Physicians Formula. I tried their natural mascara and had to take it back to the store for a refund. It never dried! An hour after I put it on, it still felt sticky and I had raccoon eyes. Maybe I bought a bad batch. Just my two cents… Josie Maran’s is next on my list to try!

  39. A couple other things to avoid in harmful mascaras include carmine, petrochemicals and thimerosal (mercury). The first mascara that I could actually wear is Organic and is hand-crafted in the Colorado Rockies by Lemongrass Spa. It is gluten free, soy free and Organic! The mascara is colored with coffee so it has a natural colorant and moisturizes with chamomile. Yes, I do sell it, but I did not wear any mascara (except on rare occasion) for about 5 years because they all irritated my eyes so much! It makes sense, as our eyes are like sponges and soak up everything. http://www.ourlemongrassspa.com/repsites/frm_bridge.aspx?id=158&bridge=PRODUCT&prod=J6550

  40. Retinyl acetate is a form of Vitamin A. It is not likely to be a cause for concern. And the idea that aluminum is dangerous is simply silly. Do I throw away my cookware and foil wrap?

  41. Arbonne also sells a natural mascara with no tar/parabens/mineral oil and no animal byproducts nor tested on animals.

  42. Hello! I am so grateful to you for doing what you are for humanity! What a breath of fresh air! I have been wondering lately about mascara. I love wearing it, but non the less have been worrying about chemicals in it. And then I saw what you posted and I can’t wait to purchase the one you recommend. Thank you so much and may God grant you a long life and all your wishes become a reality!
    Kind regards,
    Enrietta 🙂

  44. Nice I enjoyed reading this. Most guys don’t wear makeup and we still look sexi 🙂 JS
