100% All Natural Products Can Be Chock Full Of GMOs

As a consumer, it’s shocking to find out 100% all natural products can be chock full of GMOs.

I used to eat a lot of Lean Cuisine frozen meals back in the day. I was right out of college and wanted quick, easy and calorie controlled dinners I could have after work, which would take zero effort after my long days as a management consultant. All my girlfriends were doing it, we’d share with each other which new flavors were the best and talk about how low the calorie count was. I’d pop that sucker right into the microwave, in it’s plastic wrapping and bowl and have (what I thought at the time) a decent ready to eat meal that was healthy and “lean”.

Oh boy those were the days! This was a time period in my life where I was easily fooled by deceptive marketing I saw in persuasive, too-good-to-be-true messaging in commercials and on packages. I knew basically nothing about real food, GMOs, or chemically processed ingredients and I was sick.

Some say ignorance is bliss, considering all the alarming information there is to know about food these days and products to watch out for. But let me ask you, do you call living with chronic illnesses (asthma, allergies, endometriosis, and eczema) and being on several prescription drugs in your 20’s, bliss?

No, no one would.

That’s why when I saw the recent commercial for the new Lean Cuisine meals called “honestly good” with the words “100% all natural” slapped on the package, I had to investigate. These meals promise all whole foods with whole grains, but when you look at the ingredient list, they have ingredients from the top 4 genetically engineered crops (corn, canola, soy and sugar beets). How can they call this product natural? Are they truly sourcing natural ingredients that aren’t developed in a laboratory? Well, I wanted to find out, so I called the headquarters.

Watch the video below to find out what happens. You’ll be shocked at the information and website the customer service agent directs me to learn about GMOs.

Please note: I received permission to record this call from the Lean Cuisine Headquarters. I have the video on file if anyone requests.

The customer service representative confirmed that there is a 70-80% likelihood that any and all Lean Cuisine products (including this Honestly Good line) contain GMOs and could not guarantee their product labeled 100% natural is free of GMOs. They also directed me to a website that was created by the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) that is funded by Big Food, and Biotech companies like Monsanto. These are the same companies giving millions and millions of dollars to stop GMO labeling. This makes me wonder how many customer service representatives are instructed by their employers (BIG food companies) to spread this mass misinformation campaign to consumers. It’s absolutely atrocious.

Lean Cuisine Honestly Good

As you can see below, the entire list of ingredients for each flavor has suspected GMOs – but for some reason (you can thank the FDA for the lack of regulation) they are allowed to put not just “all natural “– but “100% all natural” on the label.

Lean Cuisine sources their ingredients “domestically when possible.” It’s startling to see how many potential GMO ingredients there are in their new product line.

The proof is on the label.

How are companies getting away with labeling an entire product line 100% all natural and still using GMOs?! Well, they are not exactly getting away with this. Even though the FDA does not have a strict definition around what natural means, these companies are being sued left and right because they are misleading the consumer with false advertising and claims.

Since the FDA is asleep at the wheel, any lawyers out there want to take this on?

Labeling a product 100% all natural and not being able to verify it (see video above), is extremely unfair to the consumer. This is fraudulent and irresponsible marketing that Lean Cuisine and parent company Nestle need to be held accountable for.

How long do you think it will be before Nestle/Lean Cuisine joins the ranks of General Mills (Nature Valley GranolaBars), Conagra (Wesson Oil), Pepsi (Naked Juice), Frito-Lay (Tostitos and Sun Chips), Kashi (Cereal), Barbara’s Bakery (Cereal), Pepperidge Farm (Gold Fish), etc? All of these companies have been or being sued for mislabeling their products as “all natural” when really their products contain synthetic material or GMOs.

Contact Lean Cuisine and tell them what you think at 1-800-993-8625 or facebook message them.

GMOs are not found in nature! The DNA has been altered in a laboratory.

GMOs increases the use of toxic chemicals in our environment, kill bees and are linked to cancer, allergies and autoimmune disorders in animal studies.

To avoid GMOs, choose products with the USDA Organic Certified and Non-GMO Project Verified labels and remember, 100% natural does not equal GMO free. Review the product list above and see the items listed in red, if the product is conventional or marked natural, it likely contains GMOs. One of the most unsuspecting ingredients is “sugar” that comes from GMO sugar beets (unless listed as cane sugar) and “natural flavor” that usually starts with a base of GMO corn (and can also contain beaver anal secretions – ewwww!). Also, hidden GMOs can be found in any meat product that is labeled “all natural” because it is likely raised with GMO feed. Here’s a full list of common GMO ingredients.

If you know someone who’s buying “natural” products or perhaps eating Lean Cuisine or other frozen meals, share this video and information with them. We all need to spread the truth.

XOXO,

Food Babe

UPDATE: Shortly after this post went live, Lean Cuisine posted an announcement on their facebook page to a community of 500,000 fans confirming they use GMOs. Furthermore, they did not show up at the Natural Products Expo East trade show where they were previously supposed to showcase their new product. I went to their booth to ask questions and the booth was empty! Make em’ run #FoodBabeArmy! Make em’ run! We are winning!

  1. This is another reason to acknowledge that the Food and Drug Administration is totally inept when it comes to labeling products deemed “natural”! Thank you for Vani for continually investigating these mega food companies! My husband & I have just returned from St. Maarten, an island in the Caribbean, where chickens peck on bugs in the backyard and the fish comes directly from the sea! We can learn a lot about what is “natural” from these island communities.
Unfortunately, American fast food restaurants has taken hold there as well. So I suspect that the childhood obesity and other disorders that are rampant in the USA will happen in the Caribbean in time.

  2. You are so awesome Vani! Thanks for all the investigative work you do. That poor girl clearly didn’t know who she was dealing with! I’m glad to have a great excuse not to eat Lean Cuisine…I never liked them!

  3. Thank you Vani, your conversation with the Representative was very honest and professional. Unlike my communication with General Mills concerning Cherrios. Please keep up the good work.

  4. Vani, you kick so much ass!! I am in school to become a health coach and educate people about their food and health. You are a huge inspiration! Thank you for all you do.

  5. I was all for the labeling for GMO’s, but the neutral magazine Scientific American just recently came out with a great study and article recommending against the labeling of GMO’s. In fact, they said it was a bad idea! It’s made me rethink this issue (see http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=labels-for-gmo-foods-are-a-bad-idea).

They wrote, “This past June, Connecticut and Maine became the first states to pass bills requiring labels on all foods made from genetically modified organisms (GMOs). In November 2012 California voters rejected the similar Proposition 37 by a narrow majority of 51.4 percent. “All we want is a simple label/For the food that’s on our table,” chanted marchers before the elections. The issue, however, is in no way simple.

We have been tinkering with our food’s DNA since the dawn of agriculture. By selectively breeding plants and animals with the most desirable traits, our predecessors transformed organisms’ genomes, turning a scraggly grass into plump-kerneled corn, for example. For the past 20 years Americans have been eating plants in which scientists have used modern tools to insert a gene here or tweak a gene there, helping the crops tolerate drought and resist herbicides. Around 70 percent of processed foods in the U.S. contain genetically modified ingredients.

Instead of providing people with useful information, mandatory GMO labels would only intensify the misconception that so-called Frankenfoods endanger people’s health [see “The Truth about Genetically Modified Food”]. The American Association for the Advancement of Science, the World Health Organization and the exceptionally vigilant European Union agree that GMOs are just as safe as other foods. Compared with conventional breeding techniques—which swap giant chunks of DNA between one plant and another—genetic engineering is far more precise and, in most cases, is less likely to produce an unexpected result. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has tested all the GMOs on the market to determine whether they are toxic or allergenic. They are not. (The GMO-fearing can seek out “100 Percent Organic” products, indicating that a food contains no genetically modified ingredients, among other requirements.)

Many people argue for GMO labels in the name of increased consumer choice. On the contrary, such labels have limited people’s options. In 1997, a time of growing opposition to GMOs in Europe, the E.U. began to require them. By 1999, to avoid labels that might drive customers away, most major European retailers had removed genetically modified ingredients from products bearing their brand. Major food producers such as Nestlé followed suit. Today it is virtually impossible to find GMOs in European supermarkets.

Americans who oppose genetically modified foods would celebrate a similar exclusion. Everyone else would pay a price. Because conventional crops often require more water and pesticides than GMOs do, the former are usually more expensive. Consequently, we would all have to pay a premium on non-GMO foods—and for a questionable return. Private research firm Northbridge Environmental Management Consultants estimated that Prop 37 would have raised an average California family’s yearly food bill by as much as $400. The measure would also have required farmers, manufacturers and retailers to keep a whole new set of detailed records and to prepare for lawsuits challenging the “naturalness” of their products.

Antagonism toward GMO foods also strengthens the stigma against a technology that has delivered enormous benefits to people in developing countries and promises far more. Recently published data from a seven-year study of Indian farmers show that those growing a genetically modified crop increased their yield per acre by 24 percent and boosted profits by 50 percent. These farmers were able to buy more food—and food of greater nutritional value—for their families.

To curb vitamin A deficiency—which blinds as many as 500,000 children worldwide every year and kills half of them—researchers have engineered Golden Rice, which produces beta-carotene, a precursor of vitamin A. Approximately three quarters of a cup of Golden Rice provides the recommended daily amount of vitamin A; several tests have concluded that the product is safe. Yet Greenpeace and other anti-GMO organizations have used misinformation and hysteria to delay the introduction of Golden Rice to the Philippines, India and China.

More such products are in the works, but only with public support and funding will they make their way to people’s plates. An international team of researchers has engineered a variety of cassava—a staple food for 600 million people—with 30 times the usual amount of beta-carotene and four times as much iron, as well as higher levels of protein and zinc. Another group of scientists has created corn with 169-fold the typical amount of beta-carotene, six times as much vitamin C and double the folate.

At press time, GMO-label legislation is pending in at least 20 states. Such debates are about so much more than slapping ostensibly simple labels on our food to satisfy a segment of American consumers. Ultimately, we are deciding whether we will continue to develop an immensely beneficial technology or shun it based on unfounded fears.”

I’d like to read responses to this article (but please, don’t resort to name calling…I’m really interested in facts, not hyperbole, name calling or conspiracy theories).

    Thanks,
    Ron

    1. @Ron: The Golden rice Vitamin A link has been dis-proven. It would take over 10 times the amount most children eat to add the necessary vitamin A to their diet from Golden rice alone.

Where I draw the line is adding animal dna into crop dna, or adding in chemicals (round up) to a plant dna. Gene splicing has been done for centuries and is a proven method.

The article, and others like it that I’ve read do a disservice to the reader in making appear that ALL GMO is good, and that native crops are BAD, or under performing. In fact, most native crops require less water, and less pesticides than the GMO crops. The problem is HOW these crops are farmed by Big Ag. Natural, and Organic farming isn’t as cheap and can’t be done by Big Ag to meet the profit requirements, that’s the real issue.

    2. Why can’t all our food just be non-gmo and organic so there is not a price hike only HEALTHY food? I realize this may look like a step backward for business but we have better technology for agriculture and organic farms are in demand. Our health has taken a step backwards due to GMO and fake foods so again…why can’t we level the playing field and just go back to basics?

      1. @Cindy: I think the big reasons given are:
        1. Yield. The amount of crops from these crops are substantially greater. I read somewhere (but I don’t have the source), that if we grew everything organically, there wouldn’t be enough land mass to plant to feed the population.
        2. In some areas of the world, people experience major deficiencies in their diets of valuable nutrients and calories, and these “engineered” crops solves those problems.
        3. Costs: Many of the “engineered” crops use less water and need zero or less chemicals.
        4. I’m not talking about processed foods, which seem to be the curse of modern life and our health. Everywhere processed foods exist there seems to be a corresponding growth in obesity, diabetes, heart disease and other ailments. In fact a great book on it is “Whole” by T. Campbell. I listened to it on tape and it was fantastic.

      1. @P Naik: That’s the type of comment I was hoping wouldn’t be made because it really doesn’t bring anything to the table. Just making an assertion without any evidence doesn’t help the discussion. In Googling Scientific American, I can’t find any evidence that there articles have been “bought” by anyone.

Wikipedia notes that “Scientific American is an American popular science magazine. It is notable for its long history of presenting scientific information on a monthly basis to the general educated public, through its careful attention to the clarity of its text as well as the quality of its specially commissioned color graphics. Many famous scientists, including Albert Einstein, have contributed articles in the past 168 years. It is the oldest continuously published monthly magazine in the United States.”

    3. Why not simply get vitamin A from root vegetables, greens & squash instead of making frankenrice? There is a difference between hybridization & GMO creation of foods. GMOs are causing an event that could never happen in nature, like a half dog/half cat but hybrids occur naturally liked mixed dog breeds. There may be increased yields of GMO crops initially, but that kind of mass farming strips the soil. Organic farming keeps the soil healthy so it can keep producing – better in the long run.

    4. Ron,
Scientific American is a venerable magazine, and I understand the viewpoint of the article. The problem I have with the latest genetic manipulations are I believe that they have not vetted the effect of the manipulation, long-term, on humans to observe the health outcomes. Most of the many, many new patent-able gene insertions into plants and animals are in seeking increases in yield by either making the plant grow more edible parts, or by decreasing loss due to pests. It’s all quantitative for profitability, and not for measurable increases in health. We know this because the cited benefits appear to have been studied in animals other than humans. Humans have EVOLVED with hybridization (which is a more primitive form of gene manipulation), over generations, so to equate 21st c. laboratory gene manipulation foisted within one generation vs. ancient grains and heirloom, non-industrial vegetable and fruit varieties which our species has ingested for multiple millenia is not an equivalency. We do not assimilate jolts to our systems as easily as the Wizards of Ag Oz would like to believe we can. Monsanto et. al does NOT understand nutrition – we’re still figuring it out. That is not their primary business.

  6. Nice job Food Babe!

Happy when people realize “natural” is not regulated so it can be used for anything.

Also, for those reading, keep in mind that it is a public company’s fiduciary duty to make money for its shareholders or it could otherwise face class action lawsuits…so it is led often from the pressures outside its own firm…and must act like a robot to go for profits, profits, profits. We can’t just get them to change, we have to reduce their profits (by making consumer changes) or changing the rules (by changing government).

My favorite product is “Banana Nut Cheerios” which used to have “Natural Banana Flavoring”. That means, natural as in pesticide/gmo, and banana flavoring as in “tastes like banana, but is not banana, something else with GMO/pesticides, certainly nothing organic.” Now you may see boxes with “With REAL Banana and natural banana flavoring.” Keep in mind REAL Banana is enlarged and natural banana flavoring is a smaller font. So they can technically throw in as little GMO banana as they want (1% GMO/pesticide banana, 99% non-banana but tastes-like-banana flavoring).

Awesome job Food Babe. Really encouraging to see you out there.

  7. I posted on Lean Cuisines facebook page and this was their response back to me…..laughable!

“Hi Mesha, We don’t use poisonous ingredients in any of our products. We would never put a product on the market that was unsafe. Where we use GMO’s we ensure they are thoroughly tested and meet all U.S. laws and regulations.

Thank you for raising yourconcern with us. Any ingredient we use, whether or not it contains GMO material is tested thoroughly to ensure it meets the highest levels of quality and safety. We take our responsibilities in this area very seriously.

While we understand that you are concerned about GMO’s, we want to reassure you that we would not use any ingredient in our products that we believed to be unsafe.”

  8. I have a question about the label – Aroma- in germany they label this but i am not sure what an aroma is.. is it lemon, or is it aroma of lemon?

also, is there a way to find out who is funding the Norma, Aldi, and Lidl stores in Germany?! I read labels, and what i find is HFCS, in EVERYTHING, Aspertame in kid vitamins, and terrible things that will lead to disease. i just have this inkling that Mansanto is beind all of these food chains. All the food is frozen and prepackaged, and the fruits and veggies they offer taste of pesticides.. i even wonder about the BIO or Organic selections they have. I really dont think that puttin in the extra euros is worth the death in the end due to the lies the labels portray. I think bio, or organic, is not as it is portrayed. i know we are talking about europe right now, but i am seriously curious! let me know if you find out anything!!!

  9. I love your site. I am just now finding out about all this. I guess better late than never. I honestly don’t know how to eat now. I don’t know what to buy and how to plan accordingly. Do you have a place to find out?

    1. Dharlee, a great place to start about food quality is the recent book “Rich Food, Poor Food” by the Caltons.

  10. I also don’t like these meals for the amount of sodium that they contain. I would eat them and have to drink a ton of water to get rid of the sodium overload. Thanks for the continued info.

  11. I guess I am about to rain on your parade. If there are any people out there that think that someone can grow acres and acres of food and do so without using pesticides, please pull your head out of the sand.
There are 4 main groups of pesticides used today. Chlorinated Hydrocarbons, (DDT, toxaphene, guthion) Organo Phosphates, (malithion, parathion, MEP) Carbamates, (seven dust) and the new synthetic pyrethroids. (pounce).
The Germans invented nerve gas in WW2. This gas destroys our nerve centers, and we die. We discovered that if we use just a little, bug’s and worm’s nervous systems would shut down also. A cheap way to kill insects. We have always referred to these pesticides as “organo Phosphates”, but the true word is “organic phosphates”. This is what is used on your “Organic products”. NERVE GAS. I know, go ahead and look it up.

  12. Thankyou for your informative GMO expose. I have been receiving emails from you for sometime and I must say I have found them both enlightening and valuable. (not to mention humorous as in beaver butts) Food Babe you are long overdue for the public .I printed the info of Beer (I hope that was okay) so that I may share with interested friends, some of which have started a micro brewery .Keep up the good work and keep sending me those emails Thanks

  13. Thank You So Much For All That You Do My Dear Vani The FoodBabe! I Do Not Eat Lean Cuisine. I Eat Amy’s Brand Frozen Meals on My Lazy Days. From What I Can Tell They Are Conscious About How They Prepare their Meals.

    Many thanks,

    Amirah Ansaar

  14. If GMO’s turn out to be safe, that’s great! But until they are proven safe I will NOT be anyone’s guinea pig!!!! Love you food babe!!!!!!!

  15. Wow. So sad… and scary… and frustrating… thanks for everything you do. My husband, 4-year old, 3-year old, 1-year old (though they may not realize it), and I really appreciate your hard work.

  16. You are amazing Vani!!!! So, so amazing. That’s all I can say. Thank you for all you do and I hope you know we all appreciate you and your team’s hard work.

  17. So funny! You go, girl!
I used to eat Lean Cuisines for years for lunch when I was a teacher. Wish I’d known then what I know now!
Can’t wait for more reports from FB!

  18. Many of your web positing especially that include ingredient labels are in graphic form. It should be really wonderful if these could be converted to text so that one could do searches within the web pages…

    Thanks for a fantastic resource!

  19. Well done. Screaming on the inside? I know how that feels. I was irate when I called Similac to confirm that their baby formulas contained GMOs. I would love to have you hear about how SAFE he explained to me that GMOs were. I had to feed my first child formula after she was 6 months, having no idea about the facts or what GMOs even were. I gave him a lecture, letting him know that he should educate himself. GMOs in foods is bad enough. GMOs in baby formulas, a baby’s main source of nutrition, is CRIMINAL. Shame, shame, shame on those companies making money at the expense of babies little bodies.

  20. Please keep up the good work.

I live in the UK, where the introduction of feed for animals is now GMO in a lot of cases, and although company’s like TESCO have publicised that fact, they have refused to label eggs etc, etc with a label stating which ones are, or are not!!

People like Monsanto and similar companies need to be driven out of business!

    Thanks again

    Barrie x

  21. I am SO glad that you took this on! It annoys me that so many of the things in our culture are quoted as “fact” are funded by big names companies that benefit from skewing the information.

Love the HUGE logical fallacy that well 70-80% of our the US population’s food has GMOs in it, so that makes it ok right?! Wow!

The amount of children that are now growing up with food allergies and other medical conditions, like autism, have sharply increased and I am so convinced it’s because of all of the crud in the US food supply!

  22. Thanks for the work you do, Vani. I’m totally with you! The thing that disturbs me (there are so many!), is that I have friends I can send the video to who will respond to me that I am being a Debbie Downer, and besides, “What can I do about it, anyway?” They do have a point; it is so hard for a few of us to fight these huge corporations. But I do it, anyway!

    Thank you again.

  23. Following the same logic as for the GMOs, shouldn’t the meat in prepared meals labelled “all natural” also legally have to be free of synthetic hormones and antibiotics? Or does the labeling law for “natural” meat cover this?

  24. In photography there is a saying,

Don’t believe 80 percent of what you see,
now it seems we can add, see or read.

  25. You are amazing!!
I am now a label reader for the last three months.
I am sickened by all the bad things I used to eat!
I will be watching for the Costco investigation!!
You are doing a great job!

  26. Vani, my son’s 8th grade health teacher was just telling them about “natural flavors” today and said that they may come from a beaver! She left out the butt part, but she has to be a subscriber of yours!! Now my son has another person telling him processed food is bad and not just his mom! Love it!

  27. Thank you food babe for looking into this. I typically don’t eat processed foods like this due to the preservatives, sodium, etc but I was really happy to see you take this a step further to educate people. Overall, I think we all should avoid eating such heavily processed foods but sometimes you need to have something ready to go at hand and it is getting harder and harder to find brands/products that you can trust as go to staples. She seemed to be pretty forthcoming about the GMO’s and even shared with you the most common GMO crops so it was too bad when they lost points with the misdirect to the industry sanctioned GMO’ “facts” page. I guess calling editorials “facts” is about as honest as calling GMOs “All Natural”! Keep up the good work!

  28. You know what would be really interesting to look into and read about? The supposedly shifting and changing of regulations put onto mass-produced animals, what they were in previous years, and what they are now(and the proposed future plans of as well). I recall seeing a couple videos, and reading here-and-there that factory raised animals are generally massively mistreated(as an understatement) and live a life full of steroids, growth hormones, torture, and discomfort due to minimal space. I’m wondering how giant companies have reacted to their practices having had more light shed upon them, and if they’ve even changed any of them.

I also wonder if any of them would honestly answer any questions regarding their animal-raising practices? i.e: density of the animals in certain spaces, what they feed them, what kind of chemicals they pump into them, etc etc.

*Note: Sorry if this comment seems a bit mumbo-jumgo or disorganized. I’m just generally curious about how the regulation of factory-raised animals are, what sort of regulations are even in place, and what proposed regulations are still up in the air.

    1. To add on to this, what sort of living conditions and regulations do ‘organic’ meats and seafood undergo? From what I understand, being able to label something as organic means it is free of pesticides and other things that most common things are subject to, but does this also include living conditions/living space etc?

  29. Wow. great interview. It’s amazing you kept your cool! At least now, some positive action is getting started in this movement. “100% Natural” needs to be clearly defined.

I’ll bet lawyers will be calling you! I’ll bet Lean Cuisine re-markets their product with a different campaign.

    Good job Vani.

  30. LOVED IT……This is fraud and Lean Cuisine should take their product off the shelves. Keep raising eyebrows Vanni. Job well done.

  31. If you got permission from Lean Cuisine headquarters to record the call, why didn’t you interview someone at the headquarters? In this video, you look like a condescending bully picking on some poor call center girl who probably makes minimum wage.

  32. Hello from Norway.Thank you Vani, for another great post. I truly agree with you on the “ignorance is bliss”- saying. 🙂

  33. Another fine example Vani of the deception in advertising so rampant in America today. Another ploy to attract consumers into thinking they are making a healthy choice when in fact, the is no difference in the ingredience of the product. The thing that really gets me about all these food additives and modified ingredients is that they have completely altered the taste to the point where there is no taste. As an example, I purchased a small package of sugar with a store label and, upon opening it, discovered something very odd. The granuales were much finer and when added to my coffee, it didn’t taste like sugar. A basic stable like sugar has been altered to an unrecognizable state. Our food supply has become so industrialized I am beginning to wonder just how much longer it will be before we no longer know what whole food is?

  34. Ugh this is all rubbish! You are using fear tactics to scare people. There is no proof that GMOs kill bees or cause cancer or any of the other things you say. And that website factsaboutgmos.org? There are articles on there that are all well written with scientific research to back up claims. You say this website is backed somewhat by Monsanto? What about your website? You have tons of ads and giveaways from your organic all natural products. You are doing the same thing!
