You Won’t Believe Where Silly Putty Is Hiding In Your Food

You won’t believe where silly putty is hiding in your food. Find out on the latest episode of Food Babe TV and don’t miss the details below:

Watch Now:

Dimethylpolysiloxane 101 (a.k.a. Silly Putty)

Dimethylpolysiloxane is commonly used in vinegary-smelling silicone caulks, adhesives, and aquarium sealants, a component in silicone grease and other silicone based lubricants, as well as in defoaming agents, mold release agents, damping fluids, heat transfer fluids, polishes, cosmetics, hair conditioners AND IN OUR FOOD!

There have been no major studies conducted on the safety of dimethylpolysiloxane in food by the FDA or the Food Industry since it was approved in 1998, but the food industry is allowed to use it in anything they want (except milk). Chick-fil-A Chicken Sandwiches, McDonalds French Fries, KFC Mash Potatoes and Biscuits, Taco Bell Cinnamon Twists, Five Guys French Fries, Dominos Bread Sticks, and on and on – the list of guilty restaurants is mind-blowing.

Companies Using Dimethylpolysiloxane

Dimethylpolysiloxane Can Contain Formaldehyde

The FDA allows dimethylpolysiloxane to be preserved by several different chemicals that don’t have to be listed on the label either, including formaldehyde! Formaldehyde is one of the most highly toxic substances on earth. It is linked to allergies, brain damage, cancer, and auto-immune disorders. See chart below directly from US Code Of Federal Regulation:

Formaldehyde

Dimethylpolysiloxane is commonly used as a filler fluid in breast implants, however this substance has started to be phased out due to safety concerns. If this substance is considered to be a hazardous ingredient when it’s placed inside our bodies, it makes you wonder, how can the FDA allow us to eat it?

American Companies Exploiting Us Once Again

When I compared the ingredient list of McDonald’s french fries in the US vs. the UK version, I was floored to witness the drastic differences. Europeans do not use dimethylpolysiloxane. Look closely at the ingredients in McDonald’s french fries below. Do you see how the french fries in the U.K. version are basically just potatoes, vegetable oil, a little sugar and salt? How can McDonald’s make french fries with such an uncomplicated list of ingredients all over Europe, but not over here? Why do McDonald’s french fries in the U.S. have to have an “anti-foaming” agent? Do the brits like extra foam? No, they don’t, Europe actually regulates this ingredient because they know this man-made chemical was never intended to be consumed by humans. This whole time McDonalds has known about this and chooses to continue to serve it’s US citizens silly putty.

A Secret Ingredient In Fountain Drinks

When I drank soft drinks as a teenager, I always wondered how and why fountain drinks tasted better. My friends and I would go on and on about this and say to each other “fountain drinks are the best!” and hit up the local gas station to get our fix. Thank god those days are over.

FountainDrinks

During my research, I found out that fountain drinks have a totally different formula than their bottled counterparts found on store shelves. Dimethylpolysiloxane is found in Diet Coke, Dr. Pepper, Sprite, Fanta and other countless fountain drinks. The food industry doesn’t want you to know about the differences either. Coca-Cola was sued for being misleading to consumers and not disclosing that Diet Coke has two different artificial sweeteners in the fountain version vs. one in the bottle version. I wonder if there will be another lawsuit regarding this ingredient!? How many people do you think actually know that silly putty is in their Sprite?

Diet Coke Ingredients

We all know drinking soft drinks is not good for us, but does Chipotle, who prides themselves as a pioneer for better quality in the food industry, know they are feeding silly putty to their consumers by serving a wide variety of fountain sodas at their establishments? Chipotle recently phase out GMOs from their restaurant food by next year, but in order to do this, are they planning to remove their Coca-Cola fountain drinks too? I am pretty sure this isn’t part of the original plan. Maybe being associated with silly putty and formaldehyde will finally give Chipotle the nudge to switch over to drinks without GMOs and chemicals. It’s crazy, that even the companies that are trying to make a difference, are still pulling these dirty secret industry tricks in our food right under our noses.

Restaurant Cheap Shortcuts

Many fast food and causal restaurants use a butter substitute product called “Phase Oil”. You may have never heard of this substance, but I can almost guarantee you have eaten it. My husband first introduced it to me, when he said his cook at his fraternity house used it to cook all of their meals. (College kids, listen up!). Needless to say it was horrifying finding this out after looking up the ingredients.

Ingredients in Phase Oil: Partially Hydrogenated Soybean Oil, Salt, Soy Lecithin, Natural and Artificial Flavor, Beta Carotene, TBHQ, Citric Acid, Dimethylpolysiloxane

When I saw “Phase Oil” on this list of ingredients Dominos uses, I called them up to ask why. The headquarters wouldn’t tell me and asked me to leave an inquiry. I ain’t got time for that, so I went straight to the source and visited a local Dominos to ask. I found out Dominos uses Phase Oil in their Cheesy Bread Sticks, instead of real butter – yum!

PhaseOilFoodBabe

It’s important to note, most restaurants don’t use this to intentionally harm us, they use it to cut costs. And this point hits the nail on the head. Using dimethylpolysiloxane is another cheap industry ingredient to make big profits for the food industry and does nothing to keep our health in check (especially with formaldehyde as a potential preservative!).

How many more people have to die from disease and how much more are we going to pay as a nation for health care until the FDA wakes up and starts regulating our food?

Don’t let the food industry trick you with this rubbery substance. Next time you see your family or friends eating and drinking the popular products discussed in this post and video – ask them:

“Do You Eat Silly Putty?”

Many of the fast food restaurants are required to post their ingredients online. Check em’ before you eat out. And remember to ask your server what oil your food is being cooked in and request it be cooked dry, with coconut oil (if they have it), 100% olive oil, or real butter.

Please spread this information and share this video… no one should be eating silly putty!

Till next time…

  1. When my daughter was diagnosed with ADHD (or what is was before we had that label) in 1985 I started to find out what was in the ‘food’ we were eating. Turning to a whole foods diet saved her from ever having to go on meds.

Horrifically the amount of additives added to the food supply has grown over the years. Educating people is key. Over the years my experience has been that people just don’t know what’s in the ‘food’. Keep up the good work.

    1. I also have ADD I can even begin to describe the difference diet makes. Eating at McDonalds or food dyes or some other carbs can leave me unfocused for days!

      1. It’s the length of time that’s frightening Andrea. If people are constantly consuming things their bodies can’t metabolize…they are living in the ‘fuzz and fog’. I’m happy to hear that you have worked it out and know to stay away. Keep healthy!

      1. Silly Putty is made with Dimethylsiloxane. Subway uses Dimethylsiloxane in its fountain drinks. As for other foods at Subway I can’t say Darrel, as I don’t eat there. Get an ingredients list from the website before you eat in any fast food stores.

I believe in balance and that and occasional fast food meal won’t kill you. But regular ingestion leads to health problems. And eventually, the less often you eat fast food, the less you can tolerate it. The last time I ate McDonald burger and fries … I vomited it up in the parking lot!!!

    2. I also have learning attention span difficulties and YES it totally makes a difference when I consume food and esp. what I am consuming. What foods ARE actually safe anymore (anyone?) So sad 🙁

      1. I do my best to eat whole or real foods as much as possible. If I’m busy and resort to packaged foods to supplement I make sure it’s labeled organic and then I bless it and let it go.

I’ve never been a fast food fan, so that’s an easy one for me.

I think the more you shop at Farmer’s Markets and prepare your own food, the more picky your tastebuds get.

But do your best to eat foods in their natural state and not processed. xox

      2. To answer your question, the ONLY way to truly know is to grow/raise your own food. Or source it from local organic farmers and producers that fully disclose their practices. A small amount of proactivity goes a long way. The food babe does a wonderful service (and she truly is a babe) for consumers but taking it into your own hands, is the best way to feed your family the freshest, most wholesome foods possible.

  2. My sister believes I am wrong about all this and claims this is is my vegan food too.
Can it be that what they put in McDonald’s fries are in vegan food too?
I am to the point of what the hell can we eat? I just want the truth.

    1. Lynda, you can and should eat food. Generally speaking, food is not what they serve you at the fast “food” chains, and it is not what is being served when you open most boxes or wrappers. So, if you are not the sort of person to “read the ingredients” then you have to go by rules of thumb — avoid anything in a box or wrapper, and stay away from anything served by a fast food establishment.

If you want to significantly reduce the bad things you are eating, choose organic products. This is no guarantee that you will eliminate toxins from your diet, but it is a good step in the right direction.

The “Truth” is that food is big business and big business wants your money in exchange for giving you something that costs as little as possible to deliver to you. In many cases that means you get preservatives, fillers and chemicals instead of food.

    2. Just some caution about veganism. I’m a GMO-free activist. It’s alarming to me how many vegans eat and drink massive quantities of GMO foods every day. If you are committed to a vegan lifestyle, then learn how to naturally balance your protein intake without buying all the vegan junk food like junky veggie patties or tofu dogs. EAT REAL FOOD. Here’s the bottom line for avoiding genetically modified crap. First, buy organic when possible. Organics are not allowed to use GMOs. Second, watch your oils in the restaurants! Anything deep fried is cooked in either soy, corn, canola, or “vegetable oil” which is one of the 3 mentioned (or a combination). Since the main GMO crops in the USA are soy, corn, canola and cottonseed oil (85%-95%), then any oil from a restaurant will be GMO… EXCEPT pure olive oil, (rice bran or coconut oil which are very rare). Unfortunately, a lot of restaurants (not just the cheap ones) are using olive oil “blends” in the kitchen. So, even if they have pure olive oil on the table for dipping, they may be using a blend in the kitchen (EVOO plus soy, corn, canola, or vegetable oil… all GMO). ASK! Again, anything deep-fried is most definitely GMO. Third, remember those top crops: soy, corn, canola, cottonseed oil, and SUGAR beets. If the package does not specify “cane sugar”, and just says “sugar”, it is most likely from genetically modified sugar beets which have taken over the processed food sugar supply in just the past few years. SO… if you ingest any soy or corn, which I’m sure a vegan does regularly, make sure it’s organic!!! Don’t drink conventional soy milk or eat conventional soy products! They are GMO! I know it sounds like a daunting task. I won’t say it’s easy, but it’s definitely possible! I was close to being a vegan but went the other direction and now eat mostly Paleo. My bloodwork has never been so good! However, if you are committed to veganism, then just get the GMO crap out of your choices! Eat whole, real food…

    3. The greatest piece of advice I’ve ever been given – if it’s made from a plant, eat it…if it’s made “in” a plant, don’t. I know that’s easier said than done, but you really have to take the time to plan meals ahead and read every label. It’s very time consuming, but so is winding up in the hospital with whatever diseases or illnesses we keep getting from this horrible food that the FDA keeps allowing on the store shelves and in restaurants.

    1. I contacted 5 guys, this was their response:

Thank you for taking the time to reach out to Five Guys. We have received your inquiry in regards to our peanut oil.

To answer your question, it remains true that dimethypolysiloxane is added to our peanut oil. This is an anti-foaming agent and is used for safety purposes.

Feel free to let us know if you have further questions or concerns.

Thanks again for your interest in Five Guys!

      1. Wow Dana – thank you for this info (about 5 guys)… will pass it on… God bless!

  3. Thanks for your hard work…we’re slowly getting better about our food choices and you’re helping us with that! It does make me angry when I see the different ingredient list for the “same” foods, just different countries!

  4. ADD ADHD AUTISM YOU NAME THE EPIDEMIC AND THE FOOD WE EAT AND PHARMACEUTICALS PRESCRIBED ARE THE ETIOLOGICAL AGENT. REFUSE DRUGS AND ONLY EAT UNPROCESSED ORGANIC NON-GMO FOOD

  5. It is being added to our food for the same reason fluoride is added to our water- it is a waste product, or bi-product that is made by the manufacture of fertilizer, and there is no way to safely dispose of it. I am sure this “silly putty” chemical is another bi-product that Big Chem can’t figure out what to do with on a list of hundreds. We need to start demanding full disclosure about where the ingredients come from that are put in our food supply, FDA and all it’s bureaucratic, Monsanto-loving policy be damned.

  6. Five Guys cuts their own fries…I was a real follower of Food Babe. This disappoints me greatly…

    1. The chemical in fries comes from the oil the potatoes are cooked in, not the potatoes themselves. So whether or not they are cut in front of you, they still have it.

      1. For me, I’m disappointed in Five Guys. They were the ONE place I thought I could go to get my burger and fries fix (minus the nasty bun). Guess I will be making my fries at home now whenever I get a craving.

    2. Posted by Dana above a few weeks ago, a letter she received directly from Five Guys:

“Thank you for taking the time to reach out to Five Guys. We have received your inquiry in regards to our peanut oil.

  7. I ate fries last night made from my garden potatoes. 3 ingredients: organic potatoes, oil and salt. Strangely enough, I did not feel the need to add dimethylpolysiloxane due to too much foam. Anit-foaming agent, really?! How did that conversation go at these businesses? “Hey, there’s like way too much foam in these fries, we definitely need to start adding dimethylpolysiloxane.” ?*#@!

    1. The foaming agent is actually a anti smoking agent. When they heat the oil past 225 degrees it tends to smoke because the little bubbles contain small amount of the oil that when they burst cause that smoke you tend to get from heating up some oils. This what they mean by foam, they add it so there will be less of the little bubbles, and less smoke. Because of this I have stopped eating fries out. Only place I have them now is at home. Also the little pats of butter are very different than the full pounds you buy for home. Just one more thing to be careful of.

  8. Vani,

One more brilliant post- Thank you!

A great step towards awareness besides articles like this is the fact that “fast food places have to post the ingredients on their websites. Consumers must visit all of these sites before attempting to eat any of their products.

I agree with Linda K~ The cleaner you eat the harder it gets to eat a variety of foods, our best bet is to eat tons of locally grown veggies, and in general locally grown food.

  9. Holy geez! And I things like dominoes bread sticks and KFC mashed potatoes on my cheat day. Makes me feel more hesitant about cheating.

  10. I would like to send this page to my e-mail address so that I can forward it to many of my friends but I didn’t see any place to forward this page. Can you help me with this? Thank you.

    1. Hi Sandy,

There is a “share this” button at the end of the article (green one) which opens a pop-up window to select an option. One of them is email.

      Best,
      Isabel

  11. Is this ingredient only found in Chipotle’s fountain drinks? Not the food? The Chipotle’s by me don’t actually offer fountain drinks but I’d like to know if it’s used in their food as well.

  12. It never ceases to amaze me the clueless reaction some people have to your informative posts.
When I was in high school I worked in a KFC and a Burger Chef(defunct) and the reason for a defoamer like siloxane is that after you fry in the oil for a while moisture from the potatoes or the chicken builds up and then the hot oil will foam up and sometimes go over the top. Some bright bozo found that this silicone chemical will stop the foaming . So money and lawyers talked the FDA in allowing this in commercial cooking oil. Not to mention canola which is a GMO crop. Fountain soda probably by the very nature of the dispensers you would also have foaming and that could cause a vapor lock up in delivery. These are reasons they looked for a cheap way of fixing an immediate problem (foaming) and one that immediately causes no death thus long term plausible deniability. Then with the diet sodas you have the aspartame(formaldehyde) made with a GMO e-coli(excretia from a GMO organism derived from excretia). and also your regular soda has HFCS derived from GMO corn. Some places will use a hydrogenated fat which has cotton seed oil which is also from a GMO crop not to mention that cotton is heavily sprayed with poison, herbicides, and finally a defoliant. cotton also has a substance called ‘gossypol’ occurring naturally in it that is used for birth control as it lowers sperm counts. So read your snack labels such as chips and the like.

  13. Foodbabe…a separate question…I have heard from a talk with Dr. Helen Caldicott that traveling to Turkey not to eat apricots and hazelnuts as they were contaminated by Chernobyl…
Most of the organic dried apricots come from Turkey these days…is there an ‘organic’ apricot out of Turkey? Is that a possibility?

    I so appreciate your answers…Jyoti

    1. Hey instead of M&Ms you should try this candy called Unreal candy. They have M&M type candies, peanut and regular. They also have Snicker type and Reeses peanut butter cup types. They use vegetable juice to dye their candies and they taste delicious. They are found at Target and a few other stores and you can look it up online.

  14. This country is a joke. With the FDA (Forever Deceiving Agency) who obviously care more (bought off) about these “don’t give a crap about peoples health over profits” companies. As the proof of simply comparing Europe’s food ingredients (from same companies) to ours shows! This country is full of the most easily gullible people when it comes to improper facts relating to nutrition and politics. Two things we sorely need besides math and reading to keep up with the rest of the world. we are falling father and farther behind as the arrogant saying of “greatest country on earth” saying goes.

  15. Five Guys French fries?? They use fresh local potatoes, cut them right in each restaurant and season and fry them.
“Our fries are just plain potatoes cooked in 100% peanut oil”.
    Where’s the silly putty?

    1. Nancy…did you read the previous posts??? it’s in THE OIL… and they admitted it themselves! (citing safety reasons)

      1. So then their statement “fried in 100% peanut oil” is a lie? I’m just concerned that companies can lie about what’s in their food. I’d like to eat out with my kids once in a while and know I’m not poisoning them.

  16. Chipotle? really? This seems like a “reach”. They may serve beverages that are not good for you but all soft drinks are bad. Why not Show Pepsi and Coke? Now, everyone that can’t read is going to think Chipotle is like McDonalds. 🙁

  17. How many of you use perfume? Pass this along, too, Perfume is toxic and made with compounds found in pesticides, aka, petroleum. I recently found out I have a high level of arsenic in my body and now must eat organic. When I’m around perfumes, I get sick. Pesticides and weird chemicals are in more than food. Check your laundry detergent and fabric softeners and NEVER use room sprays or plug ins!

  18. I appreciate the information. Thank you. But whenever i see these posts about the hideous ingredients, etc in so-called “food products” i can’t help wondering why anyone would eat this garbage in the first place if it can be avoided. Grow your own food. In pots even. Or support your local organic farmer. And you won’t have to investigate or worry about any of this crap. I do think it’s great that you and others are sharing the information though. Perhaps it will reach people who are eating this weird stuff and encourage them to try a new approach. 🙂

  19. yes one of many items in our processed foods. If you eat whole, fresh foods that are organic and local it is the best we can do. Companies are out for profit, volume sales and they feel they need to use preservatives, chemicals and etc along with substitutes to keep the prices down. I learned a lot watching a show on getting a product to market not to say I like it but they can’t use fresh for a lot of the items as it is cost prohibitive. We can make the items at home with products we have much more control over and it would taste so much better.

  20. All U.S. corn is now gmo. There is no corn , soy or cotton that is not. These plants have been raised to be resistant to insects and fungus etc… because the monsanto corp. Has genetically altered the seed with pesticides. Toxic food. In nov.2012, i changed my diet dramatically, whole foods, unprocessed, i do not eat out, and havent eaten fast food in years. This week i decided to eat boxed and canned products and have been so sick and tired this week its unbelievable. An experiment iwont try again. Also my dietary changes have allowed me to loose 85 pds. Since nov. Buy local…buy fresh…buy organic. .

    1. So, if all soy is GMO, how can Silk and other companies lable their soymilk with the NON GMO lable? Just wondering. Who can we believe?

      1. There are very specific cultivars of soy that go into things like soy milk, tofu, edamame, TVP and other products that go to direct human consumption (this is done for specific hybridized traits of the bean related to color and flavor). None of those cultivars are currently GMO.

All the GMO soy in the US goes to either animal feed (that’s the big one) or “industrial” uses such as oil, and the fatty acids don’t contain any proteins, and it would be impossible to know if the original beans were GMO or not, since there’s no DNA or protein present in fatty acids – conversely, there’s no chemical difference between soybean oil from GMO or non-GMO beans.

    2. No, not all soy and corn are GMO. Please stick to the facts on this forum. The truth is shocking enough that hype isn’t necessary.

    3. Also, GMO seeds have not been modified with pesticides. While food health and safety concerns are real, the “facts” quoted in these comments AND in the article are very sketchy.

  21. This practice of putting awful, non-food, ingredients in our foods reminds me of the word PICA that I learned in nutrition class! The FDA is allowing people to become Pica eaters. Whaaaaaaat!?! :O

    Pica Definition from: http://medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/pica

Pica is the persistent craving and compulsive eating of nonfood substances. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fourth edition, classifies it as a feeding and eating disorder of childhood.

    (Not just during childhood anymore)

  22. amazing what people don’t know their eating or using thank you
would you please inform people about m s g (monosodium glutamate) I had sick headaches from time I was 10 years old until I was in late 50’s when I found out they were caused by m s g sometimes called Chinese syndrome. my son still has terrible sick headaches, he is finally reading labels , but it’s hard when eating out you don’t know what you are eating, you may have written about this before ,but I just discovered your work on food. thank you keep it up.
    bj

    1. If you’re trying to avoid MSG, make sure to also avoid HPV (hydrolyzed vegetable protein) which is related and it’s worse! Also, watch for things prepared with broth. I used to get rice from a local Mexican restaurant. They said it was prepared with only chicken broth and garlic powder. I made the mistake of assuming the chicken broth was homemade since they go through a lot of chicken at the restaurant. NOT. When I asked, they said it was prepared. Since it was too hard to communicate the ingredients, they just brought out the big container so I could read it. It had 3 types of MSG/HVP in it! One clue your food contains these “flavor enhancers” is when you find yourself eating something and getting that feeling like “OMG, this is SO GOOD… I just want to devour it!”… that’s an abnormal response to most food… even really good stuff. I eat a clean diet of organic and grass-fed food. I used to suffer from migraines, tension and stress headaches. It is extremely rare for me to get a headache and it is most certainly when I eat from a restaurant. As Sean Croxton would say: JERF – just eat REAL food!

  23. Did you know fruit produces small amounts of formaldehyde on its own. The main point of this article is to show how Dimethylsiloxane produces formaldehyde when exposed to certain heat. But formaldehyde is also in the very air we breathe from both natural and man made sources. The amount of formaldehyde consumed by eating a few french fries is a lot less than breathing. The risk your taking of breathing air causes more harm, so maybe you should just stop breathing.

  24. Sounds made up.. “Silly puddy” is not in my soda.. This is a false claim and slander.. I for one paid attention in chemistry and learned one can not drink solids.. However, it may contain am ingredient found in silly puddy, that’s not the same thing.. Is like saying I can hold am entire

  25. Sounds made up.. “Silly puddy” is not in my soda.. This is a false claim and slander.. I for one paid attention in chemistry and learned one can not drink solids.. However, it may contain am ingredient found in silly puddy, that’s not the same thing.. Is like saying I can hold an entire car with one hand, buy only holding a radiator.. Not the same..

  26. PLEASE CALL ME AT 1-954-612-6264 for your E-MAIL or PHONE # to stay in touch with me , try to set up appointment with different ALTERNATIVE DOCTORS & KNOWLEDGABLE PEOPLE TO SPEAK OUT AT THE FEDERAL DRUG AMIMISTRATION SO JOIN US!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  27. I thought McDonalds quit using natural beef flavoring years ago after vegetarians complained about it. What year did you acquire this list of McDonalds fries ingredients?

  28. This same chemical is found in skin-moisturizing lotions, OTC drugs, and makeup(s) as cosmetic formulations. So unless you are growing your own food, making your own lotion and makeup (or trusting someone else to) and never use any over the counter meds then you are using the chemical anyway. I’m not saying that being aware is a bad thing but saying silly putty is in our food isn’t correct. It is in everything one way or another.

  29. Also beware that the Mirena IUD form of birth control (made by Bayer) contains dimethylsiloxane that releases into the body with its artificial progesterone. Many women are having the same auto-immune side effects as breast implanted women due to this, and there are several class action lawsuits pending.

    Ingredients
    Active ingredient:
 Mirena – 52 mg of levonorgestrel per implant

    Inactive ingredients:
     dimethylsiloxane/methylvinylsiloxane (cross-linked) elastomer
     silica – colloidal anhydrous
     polyethylene
     barium sulfate
     iron oxide black CI77499

  30. Also, Pam cooking spray contains these silicone oils. I get the organic variety for that reason. Guessing many bakery items may have had their pans sprayed with that crap.

  31. If you worry about polydimethylsiloxane in French fries, then you might want to avoid Gas-X. A significant ingredient is polydimethylsiloxane, under the name dimethicone. You also may wish to look up the dangers of dihydrogen monoxide, while you are at it.

Perhaps the FDA didn’t study polydimethylsiloxane in FFs because it had already been extensively studied for it’s use in Gas-X, given the dose would be several orders of magnitude higher in Gas-X.

The bit gives the impression silly putty is polydimethylsiloxane. It is a component.

    1. And Simethicone/dimethicone gas medication is available in just about every country in the world. There’s a heck of a lot more of the stuff in a single gas-X pill than you’ll ever find in the fryer at McD’s.

Of all this things to get yourself in a lather about (see what I did there) in fast-food ingredients, this ain’t one.

  32. I agree with all the methods you have introduced inside your submit. They may be incredibly persuasive all of which will undoubtedly operate. However, your blogposts are very speedy for newbies. May just you want prolong them a little bit coming from the very next time? Basically submit.

  33. Hello Food Babe,
In your video here you are asking folks to purchase ‘WHOLE WHEAT” pasta. I just would like to ask you to read a book called “Wheat Belly” that was written by a cardiologist named Dr. William Davis. He talks and proves how ALL wheat products are GMO now a days.. You are telling folks to eat Organic whole wheat pasta, but this is toxic. Read his book please, I beg you. We need to stay away from grains. Rice is genetically modified in this country and has the same GMO make up as glue now. Please read this book
    Thanks,
    Sara Johnson

    1. ORGANIC wheat pasta does NOT contain GMOs. By law, organic foods are required to be certified and cannot contain ANY GMOs. So all ingredients have to be organic as well. If it says “made with organic ingredients” but there is no certification or USDA Organic seal on the package, then yes it may contain GMOs. So no, ORGANIC whole wheat pasta is not toxic.

    2. As far as I am aware wheat is not yet GMO (genetically modified). Wheat Belly explains how it it is so hybridized (cross-bred) for optimal production that it does not resemble the original plant. Organic has the same problem.

      1. Ha! Thanks Madeline! 🙂 I update every Tuesday… Something meaty has taken over today 😉

PS: I ADORE FOOD BABE — I love how truthful this blog is 😀 If Food Babe ever wants to collab, I am down!

  34. Tis article is wether man sensationalism at its best. This chemical is not silly putty anymore than table salt is the same ah road salt. just because this product happens to me in silly putty is not the reason you would not want to eat silly putty. This chemical is food grade and Kosher approved. The comment about being preserved with formadelhyde makgs no sense. The chemical is an oil and needs no preservative. The water based emulsion version of this product that you would find in a tire dressing would need to be preserved because of the water. There is not preservative in the oil that has to be used in fry oil to keep it from boiling over and burning someone. If you dont want to eat the frys at McDonalds or five guys that makes sense because of the calories. It has nothing to do with this chemical. Food babe has no credibility with this story. She has made a very big stretch tomake this sound horrible. She needs to report the facts and leave the decision making to us.

  35. This is a misleading article at best–scare-mongering at worse.

I don’t personally eat fast food, so I don’t know why I care, but one thing really bugged me. Yup–the author asserting that the FDA has never done a study.

The author should have been honest and told you WHY the FDA didn’t do a study–because the compound has been in wide-use since 1956, and the World Health Organization has dozens of studies available, showing no adverse affects in: rabbits, mice, monkeys, OR humans.

You can read the study yourself:

Her fears regarding formaldehyde are baseless; you probably eat more formaldehyde in apples than you do in this compound.

Autoimmune disorders are far too complex to be able to be caused by one (minor) compound. My heart goes out to all of you writing in about your child with ADHD, or inflammatory illnesses, etc. These things are tough to deal with, and I’m sure you want to find a culprit. Sadly, this misinformed article does not point you toward the culprit.

  36. You are aware of consequently significantly concerning this issue, forced me to personally trust me originating from a lots of different perspectives. Its similar to males and females aren’t captivated till it’s something to perform along with Rhianna! Your very own things good. Constantly deal with this!

  37. Hi food babe’s assistant! Where is this found in chipotle food? I have seen posts that chipotle is going all non gmo. Is this still creeping in somewhere? i get the lettuce, black beans, salsa, and guac when i go. should i be concerned? thanks! alison

  38. whoops! ok i read a bit more closely. that ingredient is found in the fountain drinks at chipotle! yuck!

  39. Don’t like that chemical in their stuff, but to position it with the bouncing is silly. It isn’t the chemical that makes it bounce. Unless that chemical is in carrots and rocks and …
