Launching Subway Petition – They Will Finally Hear From Us, Loud and Clear

Join Me In Signing The Petition: Subway Stop Using Dangerous Chemicals In Your Bread!

StopUsingAzodicarbonamide

I have written about Subway several times – First in 2012, when I did an investigation into what exactly was in their famous low calorie and “fresh” sandwiches and then again last year when I did a deep dive into one of the most controversial ingredients used in their breads.

Not only has this company not responded, but they have ignored repeated requests by me and others to learn more about why they are using an ingredient banned all over the world. They have completely ignored us.

Then last week, Michelle Obama, The First Lady of The United States endorsed this company saying every single item on the kid’s menu met the “highest nutrition standards.

This is what broke the camels back.

Not only is the First Lady of the United States duped by this company, but millions of North Americans.

I knew I had to do something. With you.

This action is bigger than just one ingredient.  It’s about holding companies accountable for their hypocrisy and exploitation of Americans. It’s about waking up the world and telling them the truth.

Join me today – Read this petition, sign it & watch the short video and then share it with everyone you know.

We have power together to change the food system.

We’ve done it a few times now, and we are going to do it again.

Onward! Food Babe Army!

Thank You For Making Your Voice Heard,

  1. Food Babe – I’m a little worried about products containing corn. Isn’t corn used to make ethanol which is used to make gasoline? Seems like something you and the rest of the Food Babe Army should investigate.

    1. Thank you. I was going to use a similar analogy about taking ethanol out of beer because it’s also in gasoline. Wouldn’t that go over well?

  2. Dear Vani,

Got to know about you from the news item about Subway and all the effort you are putting in to fight food corruption from your blog site. All I can say is, you are doing God’s work. I do have to raise a concern with you. If Subway bans Azodicarbonamide from their breads, will the ban be enforced across all their outlets across the world? My worry is, business houses like Subway and McDonalds will not worry much about enforcing food standards in developed countries. They can continue following their old methods in developing countries like India and China where people are lapping up anything coming from the west and profit margins keep burgeoning with each passing year. Being a strict vegetarian (after fighting food related health issues for years), Subway has been a major source of food for me when I travel abroad. Your revelation has been nothing short of disgusting and a trust killer, even though being from India, bad food doesn’t surprise me anymore.

Thank you so much for all that you are doing to make our world a better place and please count me in for your future trysts to create a safer world of food.

    1. The alternative was doing something useful, like working. Far easier to get the list of ingredients used by a place and keep Googling until you find something that will scare the public.

      1. Scare the public? Oh like the radiation in japan? If you aren’t scared of poison in your foods keep on eating subway and McPosion.

    2. Why did you target SUBWAY when this ingredient is in almost every bread I have looked at the grocery store. Is there a hidden agenda here? How about McDonalds, Burger King, Pot Bellies, Pizza Hut etc?

      1. OMG go after them as well. Yours are the eyes and hands to change the world little by little.

      2. Rome was not born in a day.To ask why Subway is being targeted is ridiculous. Foodbabe has exposed many food producers as well as beer manufacturers. The tremendous amount of information that has been put out by Foodbabe has to me been extremely valuable and I personally am very thankful.. 3. Hello from Chicago! Watching the news and just heard that subway was taking this
horrible chemical product out of their bread. Signed the petition and could not be more proud of Vani and all the crew. We CAN make an impact on our food source in the USA and the globe. Keep up the good work

  4. First and Foremost great research and way to generate a petition!!! I read that Subway planned on removing the chemicals before the petiton was even formed what a bunch of Lying @@#!! er’s. Secondly I saw you on the alex Jones Infowars channel good for you!! Once again way to go and keep up that great smile of yours…

  5. Hi,

good job on outing Subway on this chemical in their bread.

Now, any chance you can convince them to offer 100% whole wheat rolls? Seems unbelievable to me that they offer about five or six choices of bread and not one is 100% whole wheat.
    Come on…..

  6. I believe that Subway’s “Wheat Bread” contains only white-flour, but has added lawn-fertilizer (Ammonium Sulfate) to make it turn brown when cooking !
    Lawn-fertilizer, anyone ???

  7. Vani;
My wife and I also thought we were making a fairly healthy choice by eating at subway but obviously not. We are very disappointed with them for being so careless about their customers health. We would like to say thank-you Vani for looking out for us when Health Canada turns a blind eye.

  8. It’s kinda ignorant to assume a chemical added as an elastomer for consumer products would be bad for food…

    1. I have just decided to eat the soles of my shoes, which are cheaper and more fibrous, and no one has proven that there is anything unhealthful about eating rubber soles.

  9. After seeing the CNN article about you, I am genuinely appalled that someone like you with no education in health spreads misinformation to the general public. You belong in the group with shady car salesmen who sell lemons for profit.

Your “logical” links are not logical at all. This azodicarbonamide is indeed listed as a respiratory irritant by the WHO. That means it needs to be INHALED to cause harm. To give a simple analogy, everyone knows very fine sawdust is harmless. You can eat it and there are no adverse health effects. It’s just wood. Now blow that dust in an asthmatics face, and you’re going to trigger an asthma attack. Carbon dioxide – which is what we breathe out, is ALSO A RESPIRATORY IRRITANT. Get some dry ice, make some smoke and stick your head in and breathe deep. You will choke on it.

Just because YOU can’t pronounce the word means you are ignorant. Not that it is harmful. Vanilla’s chemical name is 4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde. Oh my god!! You can’t pronounce that either. IT’S POISON!

    1. Yes Rick!! Maybe somebody like you, who´s so smart, should investigate the reason why US &A has the way highest healthcare costs in the world.

      1. Paul- It’s because we don’t have universal single-payer healthcare like almost every other first world country. When people start stopping in the middle of a heart attack to shop for the cheapest ER, free market principles will bring healthcare costs down. Since that will never happen, we need single-payer healthcare.

    2. It drives me crazy when people with zero knowledge on a subject scare similarly ignorant people into taking bogus actions against a company. It’s Jennie McCarthy vs vaccination all over again. This “babe” and other’s like her who want to feel important need to leave food chemistry to people who actually have a degree in food chemistry.

      1. Yes. The worst part is, when the truth comes to light, the public ignores it and continues to believe the garbage.

Regarding the whole vaccination = autism link, the original scientist that found this link (Andrew Wakefield) was later found to be a fraudulent scientist. He faked the numbers and was discovered by the scientific community because nobody else could reproduce his results anywhere in the world. Consequently, all of his published articles were retracted in multiple journals and he now lives in disgrace.

However, this part of the story is never told by protesters against vaccinations. And you get the occasional story of the mother who never vaccinated their child, and the child dies from the flu.

  10. While I understand what you are doing, and why you are doing it. Do you realize what you are putting those of us who work on the front line through? . We are just there to make enough money to try and get buy. With how your statements have spread ( which don’t get me wrong , is great) we the peons are the ones who get to hear it on a daily basis. I actually had a lady yell at ME to take care of it. What you have done has made mine, and many others jobs much harder. At least be considerate enough to inform people it is NOT the peon’s fault. Tell them to take it to the website and yell at corporate.

  11. This is just another time waster written by another person with to much time on their hands. I happen to work at subway and out of all the fast food places I’ve worked subway is by far the healthiest cleanest restaurant I’ve worked in. As employees we have to take online classes so we know the standards we are expected to up hold. Look at all these other places has anyone done an investigation on what’s in that cooking oil your fries get cooked in that probably only gets changed once a week if your lucky. Customers see the food at subway being made the it doesn’t sit under a heat lamp for hours . One ingredent that has some risks versus French fries that are fried in oil that’s been sitting there god knows how long…..ummm I’ll take my chances find a hobby other than harping on the only fast food place in my opinion trust worthy 100% its all fresh.. Everything is made every morning we work hard to offer the freshest , have fun eating yummy food sitting under a heat lamp all day

  12. Just watched my local news and saw the report about Subway removing the chemical in their bread!!!! I just heard about it a couple of days ago on Alex’s show!!! Good work Vani!!!!

  13. Hopefully Subway uses this opportunity as a competitive avantage and creates a cleaner menu.

At the same time I was hopefully this topic here would lead me to natural/healthier source for our personal bread/wheat type products we buy all the time.

Maybe someone posted already & I missed the bread/wheat solution?

In this link below Eliene points out how some biz attempt to make bread.

  14. As an educated Food Scientist from an IFT accredited university, I am appalled at all the mudslinging that happens from bloggers like you. Where are your peer reviewed sources? Where does you actual education come from? Just because you whined and big food companies listened, doesn’t make you an expert on the subject. Have you studied nutrition beyond a Google search?

ADA is used at less than 45ppm (parts per million) based on the weight of flour. Even if it was ppm based on total loaf weight, I would challenge you to chop that Subway loaf into a million pieces and then take 45 of them and compare the relative size to overall loaf.

That’s a challenge Vani! Are you going to take it? As another commenter said, the dangers of ADA are based on inhalation. I can guarantee you that anyone inhaling Subway bread is not being health conscious.

As I recall correctly, Dihydrogen Monoxide will kill you much quicker when inhaled and I would wager everything I own that you will find that at exponentially higher levels in ALL breads and is an ingredient that Subway will NEVER remove. Start a petition for that, I dare you.

Can you stomach the truth? Do us all a favor and stop demonizing ingredients as the general health toxins and start digging deeper into nutrigenetics and nutrigenomics so we can start customizing people’s diets and stop the food/health wars. What makes you sick might be fine for the general population and vice versa.

    1. Remember when kids used to frolic behind DDT trucks? Remember when doctors endorsed cigarettes? How about this latest development of the FDA banning trans fats after decades of declaring them safe for consumption? It seems to me that the FDA’s track record of sitting idly by while people are poisoned justifies some public skepticism if not outrage.

      1. I guarantee you it wasn’t a food “babe” who got rid of DDT. Please don’t blindly follow this woman because you think she knows any more about this subject than you do. She doesn’t.

    2. Stop with the intimidation tactics. EVERYONE not just a select few scientist have the ability to judge, reason, and think! We do not want food tainted with “questionable-at-best” ingredients. All those other countries have banned Az. Furthermore, it is best to take the PRECAUTIONARY PRINCIPLE. We are not going to risk a DDT, Agent Orange, Cigarette, Lead Paint, Fluoride Water, GMO situation. We’re tired of people getting weakened immune systems, guts, and neurological problems before we can ban something. Let’s use our brains and be careful as to what we put in our mouths!

      1. I agree. I am getting sick to death of scientists try to argue with the “Peer reviewed study” crap, when we all know how these studies are often changed to support their view. I could site many such instances, but I won’t. We all know what they are.

      2. So your solution to rejecting peer-reviewed research is to accept a random uneducated food blogger’s rant at face value?

If Foodbabe were so noble, why is everything on her site directing people to buy her products on Amazon.com? Her intentions are not as genuine as they appear. It is very easy to proclaim you are fighting the good fight, in the name of the general public. People are less likely to question her, when she pretends to be on the public’s side. Then comes the subtle link to her shopping site, which is actually her priority.

      3. If you are so worried about her (bogus) claims, don’t eat at Subway and leave the rest of us alone. How about that?

    3. Foodscientist!!?
      What´s your speciality? Recognizing strawberries?
Thanks for keeping me with job!

      Nurse

  15. It doesn’t take a person with a degree in health, chemistry or biology to recognize that fake food is not good for the human body, period. and it doesn’t take a scientific study to prove that an ingredient is toxic–just take a look at the change human diet and compare it to the skyrocketing rise in chronic conditions. You have your “proof” right there.

    1. Please describe what you are referring to as “fake food”. Azodicarbamide is used to create bread’s “doughy” texture. It does not have any nutritional value, nor does Subway proclaim that it does.

In fact, it DOES take scientific study to prove that an ingredient is toxic, which shows just how much you know. If I gave you a random yellow powder, how would you know if it’s harmful or not? Even if I gave you the chemical formula, you would have no idea whether it was cinnamon or cinnabar.

Your “proof” is not proof. How do you know chronic diseases like obesity and diabetes in Americans isn’t the result of people’s gluttony and lack of self control? Why are there Americans who eat burgers and fries regularly but slim and healthy? Perhaps because they eat only 1, and not 3 burgers in a sitting.

Your “proof” is analogous to saying “When it’s sunny and hot, people buy ice cream. Therefore, people buying ice cream makes the weather sunny and hot”.

  16. Hi Food Babe- I totally agree with your message and I am a local advocate in Detroit MI.

Wouldn’t you agree though that we will never be able to eat at Subway as their meats and cheeses are all derived from animals who eat GMOs. So, unless they go organic, I am out.

I am a non-GMO vegan and it is very hard and expensive to eat.
I would love to know thoughts.

  17. Thank you for your passion in fighting to clean up the food supply. As someone whose children have been harmed by toxins in food, I am deeply grateful for all your work in protecting our health.

  18. I don’t know how to sign the petition but go ahead and sign it for me. I like subway but I want to be healthy not eating the bottom of my shoes or a yoga mat

  19. We can all agree that Azodicarbonamide should come out of our bread. I checked my at home sliced bread and found that 1 our of 3 had it in it. Lets go after all the bread with this in it.
Some people made comments about corn and wheat. These were food items long bebore they we used to make other things or became ingrediants in other non-food items. Azodicarbonamide is a non food item.

  20. MrFoodScientist,

The solution to your attitude/student loan problem is easy, just label your food products with “Contains products from a New Jersey Chemical plant/etc..” & the other guy can label his as “Free of NJ Chem Lab products” & we both known which one “We the People” will choose.

In other words we refuse to be your lab rats any longer.

( My milk cartoon today: “No Artificial Growth Hormones” yet in a plastic jug. lol)

You could also go down & have you own blood tested. Peer reviewed material I’ve read in the past tells me you’ll likely find more then 280+ toxic industrial chemicals in your blood.

Get out into the real world & go look at any Walmart & look at the people, the herd is Sick!

    Phillip Seymour Hoffman, R.I.P.

They claim he died from heroin overdose, but what else did the test show was in his blood? (280+ industrial chemicals… lil doubt.)

When people already are maxed out under a heavy toxic chem load it’s often only one more straw that breaks the camel’s back.

  21. How about some common sense here? What’s so ‘dangerous’ about this chemical? The World Health Organization has linked azodicarbonamide to “respiratory issues, allergies and asthma” for individuals at workplaces where azodicarbonamide is manufactured. The available data are restricted to these occupational environments. Exposure of the general public to azodicarbonamide could not be evaluated because of the lack of available data. If you breathed anything at all in extremely high amounts, you’d have respiratory issues, too. Let’s outlaw pollen. Who in the world is out there snorting bread??? I can’t believe Subway caved so quickly to such crackpots.

  22. Is this ur job? Do u have a real job or is this a hobby? Some good can be done but it seems like it’s just a crusade. It’s actually very offensive , I love technology but it’s gone too far in the case of “bloggers”. Everyone is an expert on everything because they have a blog?!

  23. Dear Vani,
Thankyou for your work on this, It takes a lot to stad up to the “Big Boys”.
I have been concerned about the very real issue of Azodicarbonamide in bread for a long time.
What readers might not realize is that Azo’ is in nearly ALL flour products! It is very difficult to find even 100% whole wheat flour that odesnt have it in as an “enrichment”. Azo dicarbonamide forms Bi-urea when wet, thereby making the gluten more sticky. Urea is used as a hard skin softener, in plastics manufacture and is a component of urine, excreted by the kidneys.
The reason it remains hidden from our eyes is that when we buy a loaf of bread the ingredients are listed… enriched flour, sugars, yeast, oils etc…. Azo is there but included under the “enriched flour” description.
Now think about it, Azo is in nearly ALL products that contain flour. This realization means that its in all bread products, donuts, candy, soups, thickeners. Its not the 45 poarts per million that we have to be aware of, its the cumulative effects when we consume this product from different sources.
It is a banned Chemical in Australia, Singapore and Europe, so why is it added here?
I dug around and asked at various government agencies why this chemical is in our food and was basically told to ” we say its safe, so shut up”, the truth is that we are being poisoned by the very companies that we pay to support everyday these agencies dont give us the choice.
    Wake Up Humans.

    1. This must be a personal attack at SUBWAY. This ingredient is USDA and FDA approved. That said SUBWAY is the only company who is actually removing this from their product and that was initiated a year ago before the “FOOD BABE” even brought it up. So when are you going to play fair and inform America how often this substance is used in 1,000’s of edible products.

Does someone in your family own a Quiznos?

    1. Subways flat bread doesn’t have it, but since the attack is on subway and not the actual food additive, no one will say anything about that….

  24. This is great. Now how about getting rid of the ingredient L-Cysteine – which is also found in bread. It is a byproduct made from Human Hair – Chinese Human hair more specifically … or duck feathers, but really, what is more plentiful. YUCK!
Hint … if you want to avoid eating human by products in your groceries – buy Kosher items . Human by products are banned in Kosher items. Meanwhile, the rest of us just blindly eat whatever they put on the grocery shelves!

  25. Excellent work!!! Please continue to fight the fight. I was looking at your recommended books: you probably know that Joel Fuhrman’s book “Eat to Live” is also an excellent work.

  26. Vani,
I am curious as to what degree you have? I can appreciate what you are doing however it seems quite unfair. I do not see the thousands of other companies and products listed that have the same item in their bread or other edible items.
Why did you make such a fuss about SUBWAY? Is there an alternative motive here to defame them?
I guess what I am saying is why just target SUBWAY when so many other companies are using this. At least Subway is removing it even though it is USDA and FDA approved. You cannot go after one business without the others. This tells me you have a personal agenda to discredit Subway.
You have started a unfair feeding frenzy. Get your facts straight as far as how wide spread this issue is. You led everyone to think that this is only Subway and not all the many many others. That is unfair.

I will still eat Subway because they do offer the best product out there. No grey mystery meat.

Subway has done more to help many organizations such as the Heart Association then others have. You need to be called out on this to be fair and non partial.

    Thank you

    1. It’s called “driving traffic to her website to sell all the crap in the ads”. Say something with a long, scary name is bad for you, state a few other unrelated things the ingredient is in that makes it sound “icky” and a million chemistry illiterate, mostly women, will join your fake outrage and insist something be done about this innocuous ingredient poised to kill every living thing on earth. Pressure a company to remove this ingredient, company spends a ton of money to do it to get rid of the bad publicity, it changes the way the product is and everyone complains that X isn’t as good as it used to be. THANKS for nothing.

  27. Kudos to subway for removing the ingredient that FDA deemed “safe” to use in foods. Subway is very ethical company, subway uses fresh and safe ingredients. The Azodicarbonamide is approved by US FDA. Why is vani not going after the FDA for allowing this to be used, I bet subway is NOT the only company using azodicarbonamide.

Also, azodicarbonamide has NOT been proven to cause harm, just because in UK it is not approved it does not mean that the ingredient azodicarbonamide causes harm.

In 1998 research by Dr. Wakefield, UK removed the routine childhood vaccinations of MMR due to “fears” of MMR vaccine ingredient – thiomersal linking to autism. Well, USA and ACCP did NOT remove this vaccine. Fast forward years and it turns out that Dr. Wakefield study was wrong and not done properly. In reality since UK removed the vaccinations of MMR, the diseases measles, mumps and rubella went up and at the same time autism rates went UP! Are we not glad that FDA did not remove the MMR vaccine from routine childhood vaccinations. NOW UK has put MMR vaccine back in as routine childhood vaccine.

Second Example of UK advisory committee: In UK medicine Phenformin was used to treat diabetes, while FDA did not approve the use of this medicine instead US approved the drug Metformin. Fast forward years, UK now has banned phenformin due higher risk of lactic acidosis and death.

So, Just because the UK agency states something is safe or unsafe it does not prove the said ingredient is not safe.

There is no exact science in food additives of which are safe and which are not safe. There are plethora of chemicals in our everyday food, if vani were to go and research all it would take a lifetime, there are no true “organic” foods.
Why do you think when you go to the grocery store the chicken breast triple the size of a farm grown chicken?

I have faith in FDA approved products, and azodicarbonamide formarly used by subway and many other bread makers is still a FDA approved product.

    Hope this helps

    1. You have faith in FDA approved products! I almost spit my water out of my mouth when I read that. They are the same people that approved Agent Orange, DDT and Aspartame. Oh yeah, and GMOs.

      1. Please enlighten us with your scholarly knowledge regarding why GMOs are bad to eat. I’d LOVE to hear the proof. P.S. There isn’t any evidence it’s bad to eat. Once again, you are blindly listening to people with no education about a subject give their opinions on it.

      2. Well, there are thousands of articles on the subject of GMOs and specifically Glyphosate, here is one from Scientific American. Are they good enough for you. Probably not, cause you are clearly an idiot.

“Weed-Whacking Herbicide Proves Deadly to Human Cells ”

Look it up. But I won’t try to convince you. You go ahead and eat all the GMO’s you want. Oh, and by the way, the employees at Monsanto have an organic cafeteria. They won’t eat the stuff either.

You have a nice day an happy eating. I, myself, will choose to hang out and eat with the other misinformed “wackos”.

  28. I work at subway in ontario and we actually took out that ingredient a while ago because people have some idea that there is plastic in our bread when it isn’t . It isn’t just in our bread , it’s in most kinds of breads even the big names you find at the grocery store . Just here to set the facts straight that I know for a fact that it wasn’t just us and we have stopped using it because of this sillyness . I understand you are trying to make a name for yourself but why don’t you do it in the right way and be honest , if your going to have a blog you should make sure your correct before accusing just one company and look at all the others involved in using that same chemical . And to be completely honest if anyone thinks food is natural these days you must be insane , most of the food at restaurants and stores have chemicals in them . You don’t really know unless your making home made food , just saying .

    1. Caitlyn rose,

This could be turned into a huge positive for Subway.

They received a boat load of customer feedback & the company responded immediately like they give a dang.

Now if they clean up their menu customers will notice & reward them with their biz.

In this on going greatest economic depression, caused by Federal Reserve System/Income Tax System,Wallst trash, the Ds/Rs, Obamacommiecare so called insurance, Subway’s actions going forward can market the fact they are attempting to help reduce the need for medical care by removing as many possible toxins as they can.

Customers from other fastfood restaurants will also likely respond then & give Subway their patronage.

Much of our food here now comes from our hobby farm & local friends, but when we get busy or on the road Subway is one of the very few we will even consider doing biz with.

As I understand it the wheat we eat today is not the type of wheat our great grand parents/grand parents ate.

That todays wheat grows easier in harsher conditions, but I had heard it had problems with it. I can’t remember the problems other then it seemed todays wheat was said to lead to problems of unwanted weight gain & maybe digestive problems?

My wife & I have been glancing off & on for alternatives to the problems of wheat.

For example we are making more cabbage recipes as cabbage has only around 10% of the carbs as wheat.

But we can’t make a sandwich out of cabbage.

Does anyone have any info they’d care to share?

TEDxTokyo – Junko Edahiro – “De” Generation

  29. I would like to get Aunt Millie”s for the same ingredient. They use it (azodicarbonamide) in all their breads.

  30. You’re making “waves” Vani!

    http://www.cnbc.com/id/101399378

“After one blogger’s petition against azodicarbonamide generated widespread uproar, the sandwich chain announced plans to remove the ingredient from its bread.”

(shows the power of “one blogger” and your readers! Great job, keep it up!)

  31. Instead of tackling fast food companies such as subway and mcdonalds , why dont you point your figure at the real blame – the fda , they are the ones allowing all these inhumane chemicals to be used .

  32. I moved to Australia and am glad I did, the femi/sodo/negro former USA is swirling down the toilet of history and I’m glad I’m no longer part of it.
Enjoy Obathhouse and the rest of it darlings…

  33. I just wonder , why you didn’t go after other food chains and large bread bakers. For Subway is not the only company who uses food grade azodicarbonamide. Why not petition the F.D.A. to remove it from their list of approved chemicals. Just saying it looks like you have a vendetta against Subway .

  34. If you care about food safety so much, why don’t you get a degree in Food Chemistry so you ACTUALLY understand how food additives work and whether they are ACTUALLY harmful to humans? Until then, I don’t care what you have to say on the subject.

  35. Why aren’t you worried about this ingredient. I looked at its Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) and it says “LIQUID MAY IRRITATE EYES-LIQUID MAY IRRITATE SKIN-LIQUID MAY CAUSE DERMATITIS-REPEATED CONTACT MAY CAUSE ALLERGIC DERMATOLOGICAL REACTION”

Inhalation: REMOVE TO FRESH AIR IMMEDIATELY
Eye Contact: IRRIGATE WITH WATER FOR AT LEAST 10 MINUTES; OBTAIN-MEDICAL ADVICE IF IRRITATION PERSISTS
Skin Contact: REMOVE CONTAMINATED CLOTHES, WASH AFFECTED AREA WITH WATER-IF IRRITATION PERSISTS, OBTAIN MEDICAL ADVICE
Ingestion: RINSE MOUTH WITH WATER. INGEST AT LEAST ONE PINT OF MILK-OR WATER. OBTAIN MEDICAL ADVICE IMMEDIATELY.

Sounds scary!! What is it? Vanilla extract. Plain ‘ol vanilla. Vanilla vanilla.

That’s what happens when people without chemical education try to read industry information and draw conclusions from it. You don’t know what you are doing.

  36. This is a prime example of what a scientifically illiterate, New Age activist can do via the Internet.

This completely mindless campaign is vilifying a food additive that has been used for many years and has never been shown to cause any harm, but throw in a comparison to manufacturing shoes and you create mass hysteria amongst the other scientifically illiterate sheeple.

A pox on all your houses.

  37. So the way this was done makes you seem less credible and like your just trying to gain fame and approval by targeting a big name company. You make it seem like they are purposely trying to poison the water supply. They are not villains , just a company selling a product that has FDA approval. I don’t see any mention of all the other big name companies like McDonald’s, wonder bread, Quiznos , jimmy johns, etc. that have it in their bread, nor are there blogs and petitions about them….. Petition the FDA and make it safer for all by targeting the source, not the delivery method. If it truly is the food additive you deem unsafe, don’t bully one company that already wanted to remove it. Your methods are a bit below what I expected from you.

  38. Although, I agree with what you promote, as well as to attempt to educate people, I disagree as to your answer today on Carol Alt’s show (A Healthy You). You had mentioned that is it our law makers that let them do this. Please do not promote government as the answer. Government is too much in our lives already. Please keep up your good work to educate people and let them make the decision whether to eat something that is bad for them or not. Don’t encourage Governments involvement.

    1. How do you expect people to fight against the oppressive corporations that already control too much of our lives already? Grow your own food, ride a horse, etc..? I think you completely underestimate the power of government laws and regulations. Without it our lives would be much worse. Currently many are fighting against deregulation that will allow corporate profit over human and environmental health. I would like anyone to explain how average people would have any power over anyone else let alone the rich and powerful who would do harm WITHOUT laws and those who enforce laws all by our government. Although there are bad laws that allow the powerful to exploit the people, saying we need less laws is naive. (This the main problem with Libertarian thinking. Also since your have the first comment would not reply perhaps.)

      1. Joe…government is not the answer. Have you taken a look at the world we live in today? They overstep their boundaries. Our Constitution was written to keep government small. LOL…btw…I am not a Libertarian and our Congressman have no clue as to what is what or even know what they are doing. Don’t kid yourself!! You seem to be of a Democrat mentality. Government knows best. LOL Like Obamacare? HA HA Right!! NOT!

      2. Joe – Your Big Government Socialist Utopia exists. It is called the European Union. I highly reccomend you get on a plane & get away from what is left of our “Free” Constitutional Republic. As a libertarian, I would be willing to donate $ for you one way ticket. If the “Food Babe” can get 50,000 morons out of 320 Million people to sign this stupid petition to ban a harmless ingredient in bread we could probably raise the money to ship you and all of your commie buddies back to the European homeland.

    2. Poisoning people should be illegal. I don’t understand how that becomes OK because we want “small government” and we want to “stop government interference”. At that rate we should not have any laws at all because its government interference, right?

Oh and in this case, it is the government (FDA marking this ingredient as GRAS) that is helping companies use this product.

      1. There are far too many chemicals, gases, etc. out there. What Vani is doing is precisely what anyone should do and I applaud her. Go to the source of the problem. Why do you think Government is so great when they are a major problem? They aren’t any different from you and me…or anyone else. As a matter of fact, they don’t know anything and they certainly do not listen to the American people. The banter back and forth…taking money from lobbyists, etc. for their own agendas. Take for instance Formaldehyde, is in the majority of soaps and has shown to cause cancer; Microwaves..the radiation that is released is cancer causing and microwaves still exist. I can go on and on. Look at all the cancer around us….microwaves came out in late 70’s maybe.. and far too much coincidence. Below is a link to Johnson and Johnson listening to consumers and activists for health and safety to remove Formaldehyde in their baby shampoo. Low and behold…it didn’t take for them to change it. Be your own voice and don’t depend on Government!!!

      2. Delta…btw…it’s ludicrous to compare apples to oranges. There are common sense laws and then there situations where government has no business delving into! Again…don’t be naive and believe Government is the answer to our problems.

    3. Jackie, I think it is pretty clear where Vani leans. LEFT. I do like what she has to say. and agree with many of her posting. However, if u look at her pictures and who she is with..u get it. That is why she supports government. I respect the work she is doing. However, we need to be clear where she leans. Also at the bottom this page, really tells it all. Just saying.. I wondering if this will get posted…lol

      1. Yea…I figured she was a leftie…when that came out of her mouth on the Carol Alt show. LOL Ugh….Government is far too much in our lives ..and they make matters worse. They are so screwed up themselves! They all need to stop trying to come up with new programs and/or regulations and take a look at all the duplicative spending habits they do with the American Tax payer dollars. HA! But you know what??? They won’t …cuz that takes work and time. And they are all just a bunch of lazy *(&*(& and it’s much easier to spend someone else’s money, frivolously, then spend their own. Bottom line…it’s all up to the individual to make decisions…not to depend on government to regulate everything in our lives.

      2. Jackie, I agree….but, it is sad that people are not getting this. And our useless elected officials (both sides) are self serving and have there pockets filled with lobby money….All we have to do is follow the money. ;0(

    4. we are still importing food and fish from japan by hillory clintons approval, rubber and bromine in our bread is one thing but RADIATION is unacceptable!! I have ever right to defend my self.
        while we are at it.
who the hell aloud these criminals to sit on the board of FDA.
seams to me they should be standing behind the FDA exec’s
so we only use one bullet per dozen
apply the bullet savings to preventive medicine.
        and organic gardening.

AMERICA WAKE UP THEY ARE WAGING WAR ON US LETS FIGHT BACK
WAKE UP EDUCATE , REACT. SHOW SOME BALLS
the major key word HERE IS
        ACCOUNTABILITY
        what have you done
where can I find out what you really done.
        when, where, why,
and what effect did it have on me.
        ACCOUNTABILITY + ACCOUNTABILITY + ACCOUNTABILITY
        no more lies

        .

      2. I’m angry too. This is totally unbelievable. Have eaten at Subway an average of 5 days a week for the past two years, under the premise that I was eating healthy. Excuse my french but Damn them. Where’s the petition? I have heard they are changing the recipe, but where’s the date that this change is taking place?

  39. Hi Vani

Thank you so much for making everyone aware of the horrible chemical azodicarbonamide. My outrage is with the FDA. To allow a chemical of this nature to be dumped into our food is totally inexcusable. Now that you have every one’s attention please do something to make the FDA answer to it’s intentionally harmful decision. The FDA continually allows things like this. Europe bans it, we eat it. And not only eat it but our FDA calls it good. Let’s make them accountable, heads need to role over this.
