Cancer Fighting Cherry Berry Smoothie

If you’ve been following along on Snapchat (username: thefoodbabe) you know that I can’t get enough of the organic cherries from the farmer’s market this year! Cherries contain vitamin C, carotenoids, and anthocyanins – compounds that together fight cancer. And that’s why I love this new smoothie recipe. But first, if you love cherries too, just make sure that you are buying organic ones that haven’t been sprayed with pesticides. Conventionally grown cherries are on EWG’s Dirty Dozen List of produce that is the most contaminated with pesticides. They get their data from the USDA Pesticide Data Program, which tests for pesticide residues on washed produce. Conventional cherries have been shown to carry residues from up to 42 different pesticides, some of which are known carcinogens, suspected hormone disruptors, neurotoxins, and bee toxins. If you can’t find fresh organic cherries where you are, the frozen variety is easier to find and works great in this recipe too!

  1. Are you aware of the TPP (Trans pacific partnership) that Obama is trying to force through? No labeling of GMO’s and no labeling of where meat products are originating from. This after he is on record before his election as saying “the American people deserve to know what’s in their food” concerning labeling of GMO’s. I think you should use the platform you have to vigorously spread the word to fight this threat to our health! Please!!!!

    1. No, not aware. Is he taking bribes from big corporations? It would be illegal to take bribes, right? I mean, the President of the United States shouldn’t take bribes, nor anyone like Congress or Governors.

      1. I’m sorry you have been a box all of your life Tim, or are just too young to realize that people have been programed not to see what is happening to the world. Yes all “carrier” political people are in it for the money; the higher they go the more corrupt it is! If you think it could be bad with Boarack just think what could happen with Billary!

      2. Absolutely true, Jim. Who knows what would happen if Hillary would become president, but it would definitely be something bad! Also, great recipe Food Babe! I’m excited to try it out!

    2. Sounds like you follow the same Blogs and cites that I do. It’s so important for people to know this stuff and what we are truly fighting.
I’ve been making smoothies like this for years, dear Vani.
      This is fluff.
We love you Vani, and need you back on the Front Lines getting the NEWS out to the Army!!!

      1. I don’t trust TPP. I don’t trust Obama or Hillary!! We need to stop political correctness before it spreads like a contagious virus and destroys all of humanity!
Love the recipe by the way!!

  2. This sounds great! I can’t get enough cherries when they are in season. And this is a great recipe for a green smoothie virgin…spinach is so mild you don’t even notice it. I tell all of my happy, healthy and hot readers to start with spinach or romaine in their smoothies before they move on to the stronger flavored greens ?

    1. As you said if you can’t get organic cherries you said to use frozen ones. Are the frozen ones safe without any GMO’s or toxins like round up?

      1. Cherries aren’t genetically modified. Make sure you get organic frozen cherries to avoid pesticides.

  3. I love to buy frozen pitted cherries from Trader Joe’s! They have great frozen berries of all kinds as well, as does Costco. I recently discovered that I’m *allergic* to spinach (that’s why green smoothies were making my throat itchy!). Has anyone tried using Romaine lettuce in smoothies?

    1. Susan – Romaine would work great in this smoothie and any other leafy green you aren’t allergic to – good luck!

  4. Is there actually any evidence (peer reviewed medical journals?) that this fights cancer, or is it all just a hypothesis?

    1. Yo dude, click on the links in Vani’s posts if you want to see the info behind the claims. To answer your specific question, click on the “cancer” link in the second sentence. 🙂

  5. Food Babe, Thanks for doing what you do.

What I don’t understand is that people continue to go to these stores to purchase these overly priced items/products that just aren’t good for you. If companies will not disclose their ingredients, then just don’t buy them period, plain and simple.
Do you really need this type of gosh-awful coffee in your life, no matter how convenient it is?????
Invest in a good espresso/cappuccino machine and make it yourself at home with all natural wholesome ingredients!

  6. Hey Vani! Could you post some low oxalate recipes? Thanks for all your hard work! Keep it up

  7. Cherries are *very effective* for gout- my father ate them when afflicted everytime the gout was alleviated and is the only thing he did differently.

Also Vani- just the ad below about joining the Food Babe Army…. and thought how cool – fighting the FDA with the FBA!

    Great slogan for change…..

  8. While I love the cherry berry idea Vani, the spinach is actually not a good idea to mix with this. Fruit and veggies have a different alkaline/acid pH and actually causes imbalanced with the stomach acids. Take out the spinach and just use the fruit for a safer, better smoothie!

  9. Judy has a point. Fruit doesn’t combine well with other foods (except acid fruit with nuts), but there are certainly worse things you could eat : ) (that’s an understatemment)
As inconvenent and unpopular as it might be, proper food combining helps nearly everything.
Thanks very much for all your good work Vani!

  10. Hi there. I read that eating raw spinach or using raw spinach in a smoothie is very bad and that the spinach should first be steamed slightly to break down something in it that causes the problem. Sorry I cannot remember all the details.
    Regards
    Frances from Sunny South Africa

  11. I would like to put this recipe on my Pinterest but I can’t find the icon to click.

  12. Concerning the spinach, I think it might be the oxalates. These can cause kidney stones in some individuals, if anyone is prone to them, spinach and even kale have a large amount. Better to steam them first and allow to cool. Not sure if that really helps to prevent stones though. I know someone who is allergic to spinach and even had to go to the emergency room after having some. need to watch dips and other foods when your out to eat because it can be hidden in the recipe. Love the work you do Vani.

  13. Food Babe,
‘Always Great’ to see you promoting foods/drinks that actually support health. Real Food is truly our medicine. The more one understands nutrition, the more one fine tunes food combinations, drinking and eating at the same time, drinking enough good water. . . Vani and your army are truly part of the solution that this country and the world’s needs today to educate people and help them rise above the rampant misanthropic greed and misinformation. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. The real place to begin is with what you eat/drink. . . As you see/feel the changes from within, you can help change the world through yourself, your family and friends. One meal at a time is where the battle is won or lost. . . Don’t let the food you eat eat you!!
    Blessings!

  14. Just got through drinking the cherry berry smoothy, it’s a keeper very good. I agree on the organic issue that is all I buy

  15. I do t see blueberries on the clean or dirty list. Do I need to buy organic when purchasing blueberries? Thanks

    1. Blueberries are an additional berry type that contain a high level of pesticides. The thin skin allows the chemicals to enter the fruit’s flesh. Buying blueberries organic is the safest option. Conventional blueberries contain 52 pesticide chemicals.

  16. I really love this smoothie because it’s as double whammy on taking care of busy moms so they can stay healthy, fight cancer, and it’s so quick for a nice on-the-go meal. I’ve been really focusing on helping busy moms get healthy, it is my LIFE!

  17. This smoothie looks great, but after having bariatric, I have to follow a strict diet so I wanted to know what is the nutritional info for this smoothie. Cannot consume anything more than 5 grams of fat and 5 grams of sugar. Also would like to know how many calories and how many grams of protein. Thank you!

  18. Well, I tried this one today hen I got home and I loved it. The berries and cherries really help it taste like a charm for sure. Thank you very much for your posts, they are really helping me to get on the right track…

  19. Note to the author and others: Added vitamin C does not necessarily mean a product is heavily processed because vitamin C is, all by itself, an excellent preservative. IV vitamin C, for example, can cure gangrene even when western medicine has exhausted all treatments, except the last resort one to prevent death – amputation. Vitamin C added to a liquid at the right concentration or higher will sterilize it without any further processing involving heat, pressure or anything else.

  20. Go Hillary! Dump Trump! GOP is Big Money looking out for Big Money. Period.
    (Love that smoothie)

    1. If you are concerned about the influence of Big Money, Hillary is not the answer. Read the book Clinton Cash if you want to learn about how the Clintons have sold out our country.

  21. This is the first of your recipes the I’ve made. It’s deliciousness surprised! Can’t wait to try out more recipes!

  22. I have been making a smoothie but instead of pumpkin seeds I do 2 tablespoons of almond butter and it is absolutely divine! Oh, and also I use water instead of milk. I have this movie every single morning for breakfast and I also add protein powder as well. Cherries are so so so good! 🙂 Thanks so much for sharing all of your wonderful recipes and we’re doing the work that you do! 🙂

  23. l have been drinking this smoothie for years. l however add full fat unsweetened yogurt, chia seeds, and protein. l use eggs (organic, pasture raised eggs etc.). l sometimes add honey if l don’t have a sweeter berry in the mix. l will have to add some pumpkin or sunflower seeds and see how it goes. l do want it t taste good so a little leery on adding greens, but will try. l will also look into those “spinach” claims that some have mentioned. By the way, salmonberries go well with cherries, specifically rainier cherries. They grow wild in my back yard.
