This New Label On Food Will Keep You From Getting Poisoned By Monsanto’s Weedkiller

A large body of peer reviewed research links glyphosate (which is sprayed on the majority of crops in this country) to cancer, reproductive problems, liver, kidney and skin cell damage, antibiotic-resistance, and more. The WHO International Agency for Research on Cancer has deemed it a probable carcinogen. One of the biggest sellers of glyphosate, Monsanto, has been colluding with the EPA to keep it on the market. It’s truly outrageous and I’m as angry as you are.

A few months ago when the story broke that popular foods like Cheerios and Stacy’s Pita Chips contain glyphosate weedkiller – we were outraged. If you didn’t hear the news, Food Democracy Now! and The Detox Project commissioned these tests which found glyphosate in many popular American foods… even some that are organic and non-GMO! My reporting on this was my most shared post of 2016, with millions of views. It struck a chord with so many of you and for good reason.

Since all of this has come out, I’ve received thousands of comments and emails from people who want to know how to avoid glyphosate and know if the food we buy at the store contains it. I’m right there with ya, I want to know too.

The FDA and USDA (who are in charge of regulating the safety of our food) are not testing food for glyphosate. This is a real problem.

The only way to find out if the food you are buying contains glyphosate is to literally send it to a lab and get it tested. It’s ridiculous. We are totally in the dark and have no clue whether the food we are buying is tainted with this poison. There could be an insane amount of glyphosate in the food we are eating every day, and we’d never know.

Thankfully, a BRAND NEW FOOD LABEL just launched that will give us all what we are asking for – the “Glyphosate Residue Free” label by The Detox Project!

When Henry Rowlands from The Detox Project told me about his latest project and this label, I was bursting at the seams and couldn’t wait to tell you all about it! The “Glyphosate Residue Free” verification program has begun labeling products that have been tested and are free of glyphosate. They are working with food manufacturers and grocery chains, so that soon we will see labels like this on products!

Although we already have the Non-GMO Project label to avoid GMOs, that’s the only information that it provides. The “Non-GMO Project” label only verifies that a product doesn’t contain GMOs. While that is good, it’s limited to GMOs only and unfortunately won’t tell you if those non-GMO Cheerios you are buying are free of glyphosate.

The new Glyphosate Residue Free label takes this a step further and just offers more transparency and information about the food you are buying. This label applies to any GMO, non-GMO, or organic food. This is important because glyphosate doesn’t discriminate.

Most Americans are eating glyphosate every day…

No matter how healthy we eat or how much we try to protect ourselves from it, this weedkiller is being used on most major conventional food crops – such as wheat, tomatoes, sugar, nuts, oranges, apples, beans, and corn. It isn’t just used on GMOs but on 70 different food crops in the U.S. – and winding up in practically everything Americans eat.

Glyphosate is also so rampant in our environment that it is contaminating even food that isn’t directly sprayed with it – such as organic food. It’s been found in honey, cereals, meat, drinking water, breast milk, infant formula, chips, cookies… the list goes on. There is only so much glyphosate-free food out there and it is going to take awhile to rid it from our food system.

That’s why this label is such a game-changer. When brands start testing their food and finding glyphosate, they will take steps to clean up their supply chains. This will improve the integrity of the organic label and our food system as a whole.

We are working towards creating a safer food system for everyone. We should all feel like the food we are buying is safe and properly labeled.

The very first product to be verified “Glyphosate Residue Free” is Leaf & Love Organic Lemonade, which you can find at some natural grocery stores and also online. This is just the beginning and many more products are in the process of getting verified right now!

I’ve partnered up with The Detox Project to help spread the word about this new label and verification program, but I need your help. The success of this label is going to depend on us. We need to spread the word to food companies and let them know that we want them to verify their products and why. We need to educate our favorite food brands as to why this label is important and why they’d want to make sure that their products don’t contain glyphosate.

ACTION: Ask your favorite food companies to get verified! Here’s how:

  1. Contact them via email. This is the most effective way to reach them, so don’t skip this step! Send them a link to this post and ask them to get verified by The Detox Project here.
  2. Post on their Facebook pages or Twitter feeds and send them a link to this post asking them to get verified.

I can’t wait to start seeing this label in stores! Share this post with your friends and family and tell them about this exciting new label. Spread the word!

Xo,

Vani

  1. E-petitions need to be circulated directed at the food companies, the FDA & the USDA, to raise their awareness and start a tide of consumer activism. That is how change has been accomplished in many areas.
I salute The Detox Project and Food Babe for bringing this to our attention.

  2. Petition the USDA and the FDA? It is like petitioning the devil himself. These two organizations that masquerade as governmental agencies are as private as the “Federal Reserve”. They are also part and partial to the corporation running this country, just as all of the alphabet agencies being used by the cabal to whip and straighten out its wayward slaves (meaning YOU and I).

I certainly appreciate Vani and her activism.

    1. Definition of part and parcel
: an essential or integral component stress was part and parcel of the job

      1. you know what she meant. don’t be so pompous! To unnecessarily shame someone does not show your superior intelligence, only your own unkindness

    1. Agreed! Even though I don’t put any chemicals in the food I grow right down to the seed, I can only grow 4-5 months of the year, the rest of the time, I have to purchase and want to be as healthy as possible. And why, oh why are so many woman struggling with infertility these days? That’s what I want to know, it wasn’t this bad 100 years ago, something changed.

      1. Laura, Look to the sky. If chemtrails are crisscrossing overhead, there is your answer.

  3. Vani,
I was under the impression that the certified organic label indicated that the food was glyphosate free by default. What is the significance of this label on an already certified organic product?

  4. As I understand it, glyphosate is water soluble and as it is sprayed all over so many crops, it has entered the ground water and the water cycle. So when it rains on plants (yes, organic plants, too), they have some glyphosate, though certainly not the concentration that plants would get when they are sprayed during the farming process.

    1. Yes, it is entirely possible that glyphosate has entered the water cycle. Though the route of entry into food would not be through rain water, as that would require the volatilization of glyphosate into the gas phase and then further precipitation down with rain. As the boiling point of glyphosate is about 187 degrees Celsius, I highly doubt this will happen. However, glyphosate in the ground water presents a much easier route of uptake as all plants need water and will take up potentially contaminated water.

  5. I’m confused about the pictures of the labels. What does Glyphosate in Transition mean? The article doesn’t seem to mention it.

    1. Hi Betty! According to this: https://detoxproject.org/glyphosate-residue-free/verification-faqs/ “Glyphosate In Transition products have to show a low detection level (under 200 ppb of glyphosate and AMPA) in the first third party testing and then have to reduce this level to ‘Glyphosate Residue Free’ within a 2-year period. This enables food producers to make a very clear pledge to their customers – ‘We are taking the glyphosate issue very seriously – Our product is in transition to Glyphosate Residue Free!’”

    2. It means they have identified glyphosate in their supply chain and they are working towards removing it.

  6. Good to know. BUT What about companies letting us know when Food comes from CHINA.
Especially the meats that are sent to China for processing & whatever THEN returned to the USA.

  7. My immediate thought was: “What if some disreputable company puts a “glyphosate free” label on their products anyway? What can this Detox organization do about it?
Monsanto, the FDA, etc. have enough money backing them to bankrupt any organization (or even a government) if they wanted to. They’ve bought politicians to pass laws banning the labelling of dairy products containing rBGH; even banning the label indicating that a product does NOT contain rBGH.
These people are utterly corrupt and will do anything for their masters. Expect a law banning this label as soon as Monsanto starts feeling the pinch of decreased sales.
    Meanwhile, I applaud the attempt.

  8. This sounds like a great idea, but in reality, it will tell you very little.
I work for a small food manufacturer.
Each week we purchase produce to use in our foods.
Depending on the season, we could be purchasing from a different farmer,
    state, or country every time.
Unless every batch is checked, you won’t know from week to week if products are free of Monsanto’s evil toxin.
I commend the effort but do not believe it will be an accurate representation of the purity of a food product.
Also, with costs like that, it will put small processors out of business.

  9. I emailed naturebox today!! I hope this helps! Thank you Vani, you are doing an awesome job with this information.

  10. I hope most folks realize that the food industry, is tied in to the Medical and Pharmaceutical Industries. Its a vicious circle of death. The Monsanto companies slowly poisons you….until you get cancer……and then you visit the doctor…..and then he gives you chemo or chemical treatments(poison)…..made by some of the very companies that are poisoning you the first time. In other words they try to cure you the same way you became ill…..with poison. They are making BILLIONS of DOLLARS in a never ending cycle of sickness and cure which THEY have created.

  11. We have not heard much about the FDA and USDA from President Trump nor did we from ex President Obama. Why? Because although the people want change in these agencies they have a firm hold on our government.

  12. Add Atrazine/Imazapyr herbicides, Oxyfluorfen pre-emergent, Mancozeb fungicide and POEA adjuvant to the label. Glyphosate is but one of the devils. All of the above cause cholinesterase, endocrine and mitochondrial disturbance. Glyphosate and the above do not belong in our foods.
Is there an economical/fast method of testing foods for Glyphosate levels ?.
Ditto the additional chemicals listed above ?.
We are soon coming into an age of RFID labels on foods packaging….these NFC tags will provide instant and complete disclosure of provenance of our foods from paddock to plate providing reliable and trusted informed choice.

  13. Great news . YES, even our immune system really needs to be protected from certain things.. So that it can keep protecting us

  14. This contamination obviously overlaps into the nutrients and supplements we buy. These are products I definitely would like to see this labeling on!

  15. Hello,
The information you provide is so important and very much appreciated. When can we expect to see local Food Babe Supermarkets nationwide filled with the healthiest products available?
    Thank you,
    Martin Rosario

    1. What an amazing idea !! There is a market like that near me called MOM’s. It’s a too far for me to shop there weekly but, it is an amazing grocery store. I contacted them personally to bring a store closer with no success. 🙁

  16. It is impossible to get it out of your life because Glyphosate is in the water, air, soil and pretty much all foods and animals people eat. The best thing, is to keep detoxing your body as much as possible. And get rid of Monsanto, the most Evil company on Earth ! The way I look at this problem is humans should only consume what Nature gives us, Not what humans make, like chemicals and what Monsanto sells, like Scott products, Roundup, Ortho products, and all the other products those companies sell, under Monsanto. Monsanto owns hundreds of companies that are out to destroy the planet we live on, all for profits.

  17. I use my parents garden as a means to eat as healthy as possible. It is really hard to guarantee the origins of food even when it is bio type. So I tend to make my own frozen food etc. I even make my own jam but I have to buy the sugar which I am sure will have trace of some chemicals somewhere. I hope we will all be able to eat healthy one day. The new label is a first step in the right direction. Doing good takes time, while doing bad seems easy. Weird world we are living in.

  18. What I don’t understand is why this poison is showing up in organic foods as well?!

    1. Some of the glyphosate can get in the water supply and get in organic farms. The amounts in organic food would be extremely small, so don’t worry about it.

  19. The dangers of glyphosate are mostly for the people not following proper safety procedures when applying it, not for the parts-per-billion amounts on food. There is little reason to be worried about eating it. Having said that, I do think this label might be a good idea. It should help smaller companies promote their products more. There is nothing wrong with transparency, as long as the public is informed about the safety of glyphosate.

  20. Tony Mitra published a book about 8,000 foods that were tested for levels of glyphosate called Poison Foods of North America: Guide to navigating the glyphosate mine field in our food web. Most surprisingly, foods from Canada were even higher residues than USA foods, but that’s not making me feel much better. Where does Quaker Oats get their oats? Probably from RoundUp-soaked farms! We have to ban this stuff, and I propose we send letters to our food companies!
