I am super excited about my friend Dr. Josh Axe’s new book which just hit bookstores! If you don’t know who Dr. Axe is, he’s a certified doctor of natural medicine and clinical nutritionist with a passion to help people get healthy by using “food as medicine”. In his new book – Eat Dirt: Why Leaky Gut May Be the Root Cause of Your Health Problems and 5 Surprising Steps to Cure It – he goes in depth into the importance of gut health, how it is linked to so many diseases, and what you can do to get yourself (and keep yourself) healthy.

Eat Dirt

If you know my personal story, I suffered from a myriad of health issues (asthma, eczema, allergies) and was able to heal myself with food. Ancient wisdom has said that the gut is where disease starts – and I believe this is 100% true!

Inside your intestines, or gut, live trillions of bacteria. Most of these bacteria are beneficial and responsible for many of the processes that keep us healthy. They help fight infection, reduce cholesterol, manufacture B vitamins, detoxify the intestines, and more. Scientists have also found that lean people have more good bacteria in their guts compared to people who are overweight. So, whatever is happening in our guts can affect the health of our entire body!

We are not exposed to all of the good bacteria in our environment, as we live in an over-sanitized and over-processed world, and our health is suffering as a result. We need to bring it back into balance with the proper foods and lifestyle habits.

Poor gut health leads to a number of common conditions – primarily leaky gut syndrome. In fact, it is estimated that leaky gut affects 80-90% of people and is now suspected to be the root cause of many diseases today.

According to Dr. Axe, if you suffer from any of these conditions there is a good chance you have leaky gut

  • Food allergies or food sensitivities
  • Autoimmune disorders, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome or lupus
  • Poor digestion, bloating, gas, constipation, loose stools, heartburn and nutrient malabsorption
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), including, IBS Crohn’s or colitis
  • Thyroid issues such as hypothyroidism, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis or Graves disease
  • Adrenal fatigue, candida and slow metabolism
  • Mood disorders, including anxiety, depression and autism
  • Chronic pain in joints and muscles, including arthritis and headaches
  • Skin problems, including eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, acne and age spots

In Eat Dirt you will learn…

  • Everything you need to know about leaky gut and how to heal from it.
  • How leaky gut syndrome begins and the risk factors to look out for, along with preventative measures.
  • How to determine if you already have leaky gut.

You’ll also receive a personalized plan to help you heal. It includes meal plans, recipes, a quiz to help you identify your specific gut type, and much more. This book is another great resource to have on your bookshelf and I encourage you to pick up a copy!
