I am so excited about the launch of my friend Lewis Howes’ new book – The School of Greatness: A Real-World Guide to Living Bigger, Loving Deeper, and Leaving a Legacy. When we met over a year ago, I had no idea we would become such great friends and I would learn so much from him. We’ve shared business & life advice, he invited me to be on his amazing podcast to help spread the word about good food, we’ve even shared mega stages together speaking to audiences and the rest is history! school of greatness book

In his book, Lewis writes about eight principles that he’s learned while interviewing “the greats” on his podcast, and gives you tools, knowledge and actionable resources to take your vision and turn it into a reality. I love how Lewis says he “figured out that the masters of greatness are not successful because they got lucky or are innately more talented, but because they applied specific habits and tools to embrace and overcome adversity in their lives”. I’m a living example of what can happen when you make a decision to change your everyday habits and how your life can transform! I truly believe that anyone can achieve greatness in their own lives – whatever that may be to you.

I asked Lewis a few personal questions to share with you, so you can get a glimpse into how he operates in his daily life. Spoiler alert: He’s a green juice lover too! 🙂

What is your morning routine and how important is it to achieving greatness?

Mornings are everything for me. They either set me up to thrive, or simply just survive. I wake up and set my intention for what I want to create that day either mentally or by writing it down. Then I express my gratitude as I believe it’s important to start from gratitude so that when things come up you aren’t happy with, you can still focus on the things you ARE grateful for instead of the things you aren’t. After that I make my bed. This helps me clear my sleeping space and declutters my mind. It also gets me taking action and building positive momentum towards getting results for my day. After that I do a 30-60 minute workout depending on the day and push my body to an uncomfortable state. Then I drink a green juice and smoothie, shower, and get into my day. All of these things are planned and intentional, instead of just waking up and reacting to the day. I find my days 10x more productive when I follow this than when I don’t.

What is the healthiest food you eat everyday?

Green pressed juice, steamed kale and fresh salmon. Love me some salmon! (although I don’t eat that everyday, but I love it). 🙂

As an athlete, are there any foods that athletes eat that make you cringe, now that you are more food conscience?

I used to “carb up” on pastas and breads and pizza almost every night before games.  I remember always feeling exhausted and yawning during a lot of my competitions but never knew why until I realized how horrible pasta and gluten was for my body (especially when I’d stuff my face with 3 plates full of it).

With greatness, comes criticism, how do you handle it personally?

I’m prepared for it. I’ve interviewed so many successful people and all of them say the bigger the dream and faster you climb the ladder of your dreams, you will have people there supporting you and a lot of people who want to bring you down. Understanding it’s part of the process, for me, makes it easier to not react or respond to people’s negative comments, but rather stay focused on my mission and vision to serve those that want to improve their lives. People who are creating value to the world don’t criticize others… it’s those that are upset with what they aren’t doing who try to bring others to their level.

Can you share a quote that helps you stay motivated?

“People don’t care about how much you know until they know how much you care”. ~ Theodore Roosevelt
