Food in America compared to the U.K. (Why is it so different?)

Want to know what really opened up my eyes to how food companies exploit us? I spent years investigating the differences between European and American food products, and what I found disgusted me.

A college buddy of mine decided to go live in London for a few years. While she was there, I often had her go to Tesco and other European grocery stores to take pictures of the ingredient lists for me and send me boxes of products. I’d compare them with the same brand of American products side-by-side and saw completely different ingredient lists.

Companies like Kraft-Heinz, Kellogg’s, PepsiCo, and Quaker sell safer, better products oversees while making inferior versions to sell to Americans. The evidence of this runs the gamut from fast food places to boxed cake mix to cereal to candy and even oatmeal— you can’t escape it. This is what set me down the path of advocating for change in the food system and I’ve never looked back.

Here are 6 American products that are completely different overseas…

1. McDonald’s French Fries

Let’s start with McDonald’s French Fries. They make their iconic french fries in the U.K. with a few simple ingredients: potatoes, oil, dextrose, salt—but in the U.S they’re made with “natural beef flavor” and sodium acid pyrophosphate, and are fried in oil laced with the anti-foaming agent dimethylpolysiloxane – the main ingredient in silly putty (1).  They’ve somehow figured out how to cook their fries without all these extra ingredients overseas, so why not here?

2. Quaker Instant Oatmeal Packets

Did you know Quaker Oats Strawberries & Cream has ZERO strawberries? In the U.S. Quaker mimics the look and taste of real strawberries by using “Flavored and Colored Fruit Pieces” comprised of dehydrated apples, artificial strawberry flavor, citric acid, and the artificial dye Red 40. It’s a total scam!

Meanwhile in the U.K. Quaker doesn’t even attempt to sell that garbage and doesn’t make any products like this. The closest counterpart they have is a product called “Oat So Simple” that has REAL strawberries in it—light years ahead of the popular U.S. version made with artificial dyes and artificial flavors.

3. Mountain Dew

Pick up a bottle of Mountain Dew in the U.K. and you’ll find that it gets its bright yellow color simply from beta carotene (a natural color derived from carrots and other plants). Meanwhile, PepsiCo sells a very different version of Mountain Dew in America. Here in the States, instead of using natural colors to give it a tantalizing look, Mountain Dew is artificially colored with a petroleum-based dye called Yellow #5. Although artificial dyes are common in America, that doesn’t make them okay to eat. They’ve been linked to several health issues and may be contaminated with carcinogens (2). They certainly are not as safe as beta carotene. And it gets worse…

The U.S. version of Mountain Dew contains brominated vegetable oil (BVO) – which is an ingredient BANNED in Europe (3). Way back in 2014, PepsiCo announced they would remove BVO from all of their American drinks following a successful petition by activist Sarah Kavanagh (4). But they still have not removed BVO from Mountain Dew, nearly 5 years later. Meanwhile, they continue to sell BVO-free Mountain Dew in other countries.

4. Heinz Ketchup

You know what you’ll find in almost every restaurant in America? Heinz Tomato Ketchup. Heinz ketchup is GMO-free in the U.K. (5) but full of GMOs and High Fructose Corn Syrup in the U.S., along with lab-produced “natural flavoring” that helps create an addiction to their product (6). Think of this next time you’re dipping your fries in and can’t stop! While Heinz makes a “Simply Heinz” version of ketchup in the U.S. (still with natural flavors but a cleaner ingredient list), why don’t they just make this their regular ketchup? There is no need for the heavily processed version that you’ll find in most restaurants and homes in America.

5. Doritos

Both versions of Doritos are horrible, but American Doritos are covered in artificial dyes made from petroleum (Red #40, Blue #1, and Yellow #5). These dyes have been found to be contaminated with carcinogens, such as benzidine (2) In the U.K., these dyes require a warning label that says “May Have an Adverse Effect on Activity and Attention in Children” (7). No one wants to put that on their product! That’s why they don’t use artificial dyes in Doritos overseas and instead color Doritos more simply with paprika extract and annatto. The Doritos in the U.K. are also non-GMO, while the American versions are made with GMO corn contaminated with glyphosate weed killer (8).

6. Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes Cereal

At first glance the ingredients in Frosted Flakes in the U.S. and U.K. look nearly identical. The main difference is the addition of the preservative BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) in the U.S. version. Controversial research links BHT to cancer (9) and it’s believed to be an endocrine disruptor that interferes with your hormones (10) BHT isn’t permitted in cereals in Europe, so Kellogg’s reformulated their cereals to sell them legally overseas. Following our 2015 petition to get BHT out of American cereal (11) Kellogg’s removed BHT from several brands (like Rice Krispies), but still use it 4 years later in Frosted Flakes despite selling it BHT-free in the U.K.

Why don’t these companies just sell the same, safer, products everywhere?

I’ll tell you why. Europe takes a “precautionary principle” approach towards food additives that are potentially risky. They ban or add warning labels to these additives for their citizens. The U.S. takes the opposite approach. It does not remove additives from our food supply until they have been proven dangerous – which can take a very long time and a lot of red tape. This means Americans are literally the lab rats.

The U.S. government allows food companies to largely police itself, deciding which ingredients, chemicals, and additives are “safe” to use in their products (12). This clearly isn’t a wise approach – is it?

If a company can get away with using cheaper ingredients, they will. Given a choice, they’ll always opt for the cheaper flavor enhancer, and the cheaper color additive, and the cheaper preservative, and the cheaper GMO ingredient, even if these cheaper alternatives have a negative impact on our health.

The truth is that nobody is watching out for us. When they tell you they know their processed foods are safe, they are telling you a lie.

I dedicated an entire chapter in my latest book, Feeding You Lies, to this subject because there is so much more you need to know! The food industry doesn’t care about your health, so you really need to. It is now available in bookstores everywhere.

If most Americans knew food companies are selling similar products overseas with healthier ingredients, they’d be outraged. I know I am.

Please share this post with all of your friends. Everyone should know how food companies are scamming Americans with inferior products. This will also inspire these companies to do better and sell safer products in the U.S. Don’t believe me? Look what happened to Kraft Mac & Cheese

  1. Processed food like these produced in the U.S. are so stripped of their naturally-occurring nutrients from the beginning, that these companies add their ‘vitamins and minerals’ back in – usually towards the end; however these are made in a lab and not natural. This, along with other unrecognizable chemicals and additives … absolutely disgusting.
Thank you for your continued hard work Vani.

    1. I just returned from spending several years living in Australia. I found the same thing. While I was there, I lost a lot of weight, had more energy, and generally felt better. I didn’t change my diet all that much. I continued to eat only fairly healthy, but in general, I just felt better. I actually felt like I was eating more, but looking back, while the volume might have been more, the calories were a lot less. It is a shame that I was forced back into a country where I literally feel sick because of the food that is on offer.
One other thing. Has anyone else noticed how much more the food in the United States costs? While in Australia, I could get a box of regular past for about 79cents Australian. This is roughly 55cents US. Where I live in the US, the same size box of pasta is over $1. In Australia, my soy milk was $1.19 AUD. In the US, it is $2.29. Bananas in the us are 49cents per pound, while in Australia, they are 65cents per pound, in season. So, not only is the food in the US inferior, but it costs more.
I can’t wait to return to Australia.

    2. True, most synthetic vitamins can’t be used by our bodies and place a higher burden on our liver and kidneys. The same holds true for the elemental minerals which can’t absorbed and are hard on the kideneys to excrete bc of the partical size. The one thing I see in European ingredient lists is “natural flavors”. Thats ‘code’ for addictive substances, not necessarily edible either.

  2. At-a-girl Vani,
You’re doing great!! And I have now received my “FEEDING YOU LIES” from Amazon, and after all discounts I still paid $25 with TAX included! Oh well, so much for saving a buck or two. Thanks for this ingredient list comparison. I really BELIEVE that the U.S. is in financial ties with the drug industry and allopathic medicine – can they really be making soooo much more by adding all those chemicals? I began buying a good amount of my foods at Natural Grocers/ Vitamin Cottage many years ago. But I still DO EAT a lot of junk. I can’t seem to stop!! But I will try harder with your GOOD COMMON SENSE that is shown in your blogs and website. Thank you, my dear young lady.

  3. Very GOOD article!!!! That’s why Americans can’t loose weight and Europeans are never as FAT as sooooo many Americans!!!! Soo sorry for the sheep-way of living in the US!!!!

    1. Not totally true about Europeans not being overweight! They are too and there is still way too much garbage in their food too. MSG and Corn oil, Gum Arabic to name a few are just as harming to people as all the other stuff. It is better, I have to admit, but not near to natural as what all our food should be. As long as people, here or in Europe keep on making the choice for convenience instead of health, it will not change. Food does not come in packages or bottles, it grows in your garden and is not doused in round up or glyphosate, what are the real killers and the real issue with all the strange illnesses we have, that did not exist 50 years ago.

      1. There is absolutely nothing wrong with MSG. It is a naturally occurring salt that actually helps the body control sodium levels in the blood. It is the main reason that asians are able to ingest so much sodium without the added heart disease or hypertension.

      2. The portion who said there is nothing wrong with MSG, is a victim of food industry propaganda.

It’s like saying because radiation is natural, you can add as much of it as you want to your food. It doesn’t work like that.

MSG is classed as an excitotoxin. It can be very harmful in food. I’m very sensitive to it.

        https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/7854587/

  4. I sincerely believe that food producers in the USA are determined to keep us fat and ill so that the pharmaceutical companies can rake in billions from the public. I am a born US Citizen and I love this country, but every time I hear someone say this is the greatest country on earth I want to laugh. Yes, we were at one time until greedy executives and politicians have made us a nation of sick, gullible sheep. Whatever happened to common sense, compassion, and honesty, I’ll never know.

  5. The US is in bed with the Petrochemical industry. Many of the additives are lab created at the major chemical factories as well as the fertilizers and pesticides sprayed on our crops. I would also like to see corn syrup, sugar and palm oil removed from all products. Americans have become acclimated and addicted to sugar in every product. Most of those same products had no or very jucious amounts of sweeteners in them fifty years ago. Crackers didn’t taste like cookies and tomato soup didn’t taste like a dessert. Read all the labels.

  6. Great Job Vani keep on going to keep us informed. Together we will get these companies to get rid of the bad ingredients in the food. But they will still have bad prouducts. God Bless You And Your Family for giving us all the information.

      1. Vani great post .However you missed something. UK doritos have MSG a potent neurotoxin . Also even organic canola oil is still processed w/ hexane !!!??? solvents among other industrial processes.

      2. Thanks for the info Tony! This is great. I see that Quaker recently changed their ingredients since their original ingredients were published in Feeding You Lies and here on this blog post.

Here are their new ingredients: Whole grain oats, sugar, dried strawberries, salt, dried cream, natural flavor, nonfat dry milk, tocopherols (to preserve freshness).

  7. After flying to Europe I can fully attest to this. We live in a matrix in America. Other countries are disgusted with our fat, unhealthy ways. In Europe nearly nobody walks around with candy, soda, junk food. And their food is sooooo good, tasty and healthy.

    1. I live in the UK- born in Isle of Man. When I used to visit the US with my mum and aunty I seen a good portion of people with either fizzy drinks/sodas, crisps/chips, candies, ice creams, those Starbucks cold coffee in the largest size, junk food from places such as McDonald’s, Taco Bell, Burger King, Wendy’s, etc.

We visited several states and it seems like many of the surrounding cities we been to almost all had a McDonald’s and the rest of the restaurants were mostly junk food places. Very, very few organic restaurants or restaurants that aren’t using these toxic ingredients.

Many in the US I also noticed instead of making an actual, true home cooked meal- it’s always something in a package or box. Such as a frozen pizza in the oven, mini pizza rolls in the microwave, those telly (TV) dinners or egg sandwiches in the microwave, a box of mac and cheese, a can/jar of tomato sauce for pasta, cookies in a bag/package/box, giant bags of chips/crisps, juices in big plastic bottles in shops, frozen cakes/pies, or sweets like cupcakes, muffins, brownies in the shops, etc.

To some I’ve met apparently eating Chinese is going to a Chinese buffet or having a processed “supposedly” Chinese/Asian style frozen dinner (in a box by Nestle) or for Mexican night a box of frozen tacos or taquitos, etc.

If those in the US choose to keep eating this way then there isn’t going to be a change in the ingredients. Many in the US fail to realise the dangers of the ingredients/how unhealthy they are.

It’s not to say in the UK this never happens but it is much, much less frequent.

Many of the families I know (including my own) here usually make home cooked meals, we check out restaurants and their ingredients before going (and going out to a restaurant is a occasional treat), making juice/smoothies at home for the “sweet” fix from real fruits. Cookies, brownies, cupcakes and candies were extremely uncommon to give to the kids- and it was always homemade without added sugars, no processed oils, no toxic ingredients, and were organic. Thew only thing that may look the same is the school lunches look pretty miserable here as well- but am pretty sure ingredient wise there is a big difference.

  8. I do notice the word flavoring on some of the European brands, which opens up a whole other can of worms. Flavorings can be a whole host of unnatural chemicals.
I’m glad I gave up processed foods, it’s so much easier. My foods have one ingredient ie: organic lettuce, organic steak, organic garlic etc.
    One ingredient, easy peasy.

      1. food babe preach it you are so strong and beautiful, keep being the best you can be. Love you, don’t become one of those karens. You are so fine.

  9. Another big difference is Haribo goldbears

German/Europe version: Glucose syrup; sugar; gelatin; dextrose; fruit juice from concentrate: apple, strawberry, raspberry, orange, lemon, pineapple; citric acid; fruit and plant concentrates: nettle, apple, spinach, kiwi, orange, elderberry, lemon, mango, passionfruit, blackcurrant, aronia, grape; flavorings; glazing agents: white and yellow beeswax; carnauba wax; elderberry extract; fruit extract from carob; invert sugar syrup.

UK version: Glucose syrup, sugar, gelatine, dextrose, fruit juice concentrates (pineapple, apple, raspberry, strawberry, orange, lemon), citric acid, fruit and plant concentrates (nettle, apple, spinach, kiwi, elderberry, blackcurrant, aronia, grape, orange, lemon, mango, passion fruit), flavourings, glazing agents (vegetable oil, beeswax, carnauba wax), fruit extract (carob), invert sugar syrup.

American/US version: Corn syrup, sugar, gelatin, dextrose, citric acid, starch, artificial and natural flavors, fractionated coconut oil, carnauba wax, beeswax coating, artificial colors: yellow 5, red 40, blue 1.

    1. Damn. Not even Haribo goldbears are safe from addictives. Why don’t American manufacturers realise that the products might be harmful?

  10. I don’t understand why America can get away with poisoning the population. What gives, besides the FDA being paid under the table to keep their mouths shut and keep allowing these companies to put all these carcinogens in our food. I will only buy fresh food. I haven’t eaten any food that’s been frozen, canned or packaged for the past 6 years and I feel so much better eating foods that are fresh and loaded with phytonutrients, antioxidants and probiotics. I’m 67 years old and have never felt better. Why can’t we have the same rules or food laws as Europe does. All of us would most likely live a lot longer.

  11. I request your book from the library which has 2 copy’s luckily i tenth on the list 2 more the the day I went to the library my friend I recommended to went today it 25 on the list but i think the rich allow this is they do not want to have live longer

  12. Ps I sadly did not buy the book as i disabled vet so very low income as I still fighting the VA plus i lack the space for it as I got over 1000 books in my house and simply no more space for any more space for another book book shelved

  13. Nice job Vani! Keep it up and we’ll be able to make big improvements in the food we buy. Thank you for fighting this fight.

  14. Thank you so much for your commitment and diligence! Congratulations on the fabulous book and its great success!

  15. I really am disappointed in the FDA’s inability to have any control over corporate America’s inane ability to CARE about anything other than their bottom line. Should I move to England?

    1. Instead of moving to another country, you should probably just look for change in the food systems here. The more people that are against this type of messed up food industry in the US the better. Changes are only going to happen here when more people start removing these foods/products from their diet, try to look for better/home made alternatives to those common, unhealthy products, in addition to not supporting these companies/brands, and of course there needs to be significant amount of those in the US to want this change.

  16. Vani,

It would really be great if you one time did a petition abut the McDonald’s fries in the US and/or the Mountain Dew. I miss all the petitions that you used to do that inspired big changes.

  17. I’m English. Today I heard the report on the radio that the US ambassador said that we should abandon the European “Museum of” agricultural practices and accept chlorinated Chicken, hormone filled Beef, GMOs etc if we want a trade deal with the US post “Brexit”.

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-47426138

And that’s the “raw materials” before they get “processed” to make the “foodstuffs” in this article. This page should be read by all those in the UK who promote US foodstuff over the European, and then they get force fed the US version.

  18. See all of the UK type options ARE available in the US. Check the healthy or organic section of the store. But they are more expensive? Well yes because the ingredients cost more. Just like the same box of cereal in the UK is more expensive. They pay way more for their food. So the options are here. We have the freedom to do what we like.

    1. no. the UK versions are not available in the US.

of course there may be a way to get the UK versions online but it’s doubtful people will pay more for the product, shipping possibly included and wait two weeks or more for it to arrive.

here you can get two 44oz of heinz ketchup at sam’s club for $5.68 and for poptarts $5.98 to $6.98 with 36+ in a box. another factor on why more toxic is made in the US- since they want cheap foods where you get large portions or can get a large amount for less.

  19. Why they want to kill off the Americans is beyond me other then the evil is more here in America these days! So sad! I pray Jesus comes back soon! In Your Holy Name Jesus! Amen!

    1. We here for a good time, not a long time. Thank you Jesus for letting us have the opportunity to live a fun life. Jesus Chroist, Amen.

  20. mcdonalds, instant oatmeal, soda pop, kellogg “cereal”, doritos.
seriously? none of that is real food. ketchup is a sauce so you get what you get.
    let me tell yalls what i get in california;
excellent fruit & vegetables grown right here.
    chicken with no growth hormones.
a superior source of fresh clean water delivered right to my house.
just remember that you are what you eat.

  21. Have you taken into consideration that all of the bad things are actually in the products in the UK but their laws do not require it to be mentioned. It is not that they are getting safer food, but the laws allow thwe UK citizens to not be informed. We whine about the regulations here, but they are meant for our safety.

    1. Rubbish, The laws in Europe and the UK are much stricter than in the US. By law they DO have to state what is in ALL foods.

  22. It’s eye opening. I was wondering what is the difference in the prices for the US vs UK products you mentioned in your article.

  23. No wonder people in England are much skinnier and healthier than Americans. They all don’t have the extra crap companies are putting into foods that are sent to America. The prices of eating these processed foods are not worth the pay. I find it shocking that this is actually happening because before I read this article, I had no idea overseas, the food was healthier and better. The fact that the companies are also using Americans like lab rats to see if their food is dangerous or not is disgraceful and disappointing.

  24. Could any of this be related to different labeling requirements? Just because the ingredients list is longer doesn’t mean that it’s any less healthful, and certainly doesn’t mean that its somehow less safe, right? A lot of these examples are only longer because they further delineate which spices or flavorings are used, or say “high fructose corn syrup” instead of “sugar”, or list what ingredients comprise other ingredients. That degree of disclosure actually seems like a good thing.
It seems irresponsible to post something like this without doing a lot of research into why the ingredient lists might not be identical.

  25. You do know that labeling in the EU was basically voluntary until 2016 so depending on when your college buddy was there could have a huge impact on what the differences are. Even today, labeling requirements in the EU are not as strict as they are here. Don’t kid yourselves, most of europes food is no better than here and you can buy the same terrible or great food in both places.

  26. It’s interesting that the Heinz ketchup (US version) is so much more adulterated than the UK version. As I understand it, part of the reason that Heinz did so well was that it was in tune with the pure food movement of the last quarter of the 19th century and he helped pass the Pure Food and Drug Act 1906. He was a Christian who thought it immoral to poison people in order to make more money. People trusted the brand because they could trust his principles. I think he’d be happy with the UK version, I doubt that he would be very happy with the US version. I wonder what he’d say to the people in suits who put this stuff out for Americans to eat?

    1. I live in Heinz’s home town, (Pittsburgh) and the Heinz’s were and are Jewish, not Christian. The largest Synagogue in the city (Rodf Shalom) was founded by them.

      1. And I forgot to add, human morality and decency can be found among Jews (and Muslins and Buddhists and Hindus) too.

  27. There is a simpler explanation as to why US foods contain so many unnecessary, and usually harmful, (notably sugars and junk sugars like HFCS). Capitalists make money by making and selling “stuff”, not by _not_ making and selling stuff. For each of those added ingredients, some chemical or ag-chemical company is making a lot of money that they would not be making if the ingredient was not there. It is really that simple.

This also includes the absurd amount of environmentally destructive plastic packaging for US foods. Oil, gas, and petrochemical companies make fabulous profit off all that plastic packaging that would not be possible if the food was packaged more responsibly.

And furthermore, regarding sugars specifically, they are added because of the addictive nature of sweeteners – and the more they get the ever-more obese and diabetes-bound population hooked on sugar, the more they can produce and sell.

So keep that in mind where you hear someone claiming that “wonder of capitalism” is that it excels in responding to the “democratic clamor” of consumers from below! And yes, the UK is a far less “capitalist” country than the USA.

  28. My daughter moved to Mass from california/ hawaii 2001 with boyfriend from there. She was always eating proper food before moving there. Been there 20 years now, husband 5’7 and her eat all the worst food there and are now very overweight. Very large overweight people there. Bored i think, like Wisconsin big!!
    Sad, in their late 40”s
Uk lots more to do!!!!! Lots of ramblers, walkers, kids in usa are bored too! Every state almost! Cant travel! No trains like Europe and uk! Average train speed here is 65 mph! Unreal! Bored kids equal crime period!

  29. Great article. People in comments, remember these comparisons aren’t about nationalism bs. Food and pharma happen to be incredibly corrupt in the US. The UK and Europe have their own compromised industries. The world gets better if we attack the corruptions closest at hand. In America, for anyone with a family and a non-infinite budget, that starts with AgriFood.

  30. You can’t really blame us Americans, it’s the big corporate food manufacturers that change the ingredients according to the country. it very unfair.

  31. Is there a place or website that anyone knows of where an American can buy the superior version of these goods?

  32. I believe, however, that British food manufacturers are not required to list all the ingredients on labels. I lived in London for several years and for some reason the food gave me digestive problems which disappeared when I returned to the US recently.

  33. They use a lot of calcium carbonate as a preservative in the UK and I think it is not always listed.

  34. I lived in the uk for over 20 years. I moved back to the USA a few years ago. I find many food products upset my stomach, that don’t affect me at all when I am in the Uk. I test this when I go back for visits. When I’ am in the Uk I can eat just about everything with no issues. In the USA I never know what will be a problem. I am on a clean diet but even things like flour and oats are issue for me here where they are not at all in the Uk. I hate that everything has corn syrup, and benzoate. I don’t want to think about what is in my food all the time. I just want to cook and share yummy nutritious food, and feel nourished after I eat.

  35. A wise man once said “The love of money is the root of all sorts of evil.”

Outside of probably China, America is leading the world for big companies to make money on food and medicines. The UK and Europe are a decade or so behind.

If the adulterated food makes you sick, no problem, Big Pharma has a pill for that.
