Launching Subway Petition – They Will Finally Hear From Us, Loud and Clear

Join Me In Signing The Petition: Subway Stop Using Dangerous Chemicals In Your Bread!

StopUsingAzodicarbonamide

I have written about Subway several times – First in 2012, when I did an investigation into what exactly was in their famous low calorie and “fresh” sandwiches and then again last year when I did a deep dive into one of the most controversial ingredients used in their breads.

Not only has this company not responded, but they have ignored repeated requests by me and others to learn more about why they are using an ingredient banned all over the world. They have completely ignored us.

Then last week, Michelle Obama, The First Lady of The United States endorsed this company saying every single item on the kid’s menu met the “highest nutrition standards.

This is what broke the camels back.

Not only is the First Lady of the United States duped by this company, but millions of North Americans.

I knew I had to do something. With you.

This action is bigger than just one ingredient.  It’s about holding companies accountable for their hypocrisy and exploitation of Americans. It’s about waking up the world and telling them the truth.

Join me today – Read this petition, sign it & watch the short video and then share it with everyone you know.

We have power together to change the food system.

We’ve done it a few times now, and we are going to do it again.

Onward! Food Babe Army!

Thank You For Making Your Voice Heard,

Vani Hari

  1. This companies products have been touted as healthy! Nothing could be farther from the truth. The sodium levels alone are enough to make you say no!

And did you see that repulsive Frito thing they advertised during the Super Bowl? My gawd!!!

    1. YES! Not only sodium, but the quality of the meat. It is very processed and has almost a slimy texture. I think that people should stop trying to fool others with misleading claims and do what is right. I always thought a “real” healthy fast food would be a great idea because many people need that convenience but cannot find quality food that way.

    2. Don’t you think this is something to take up with the FDA? If the FDA didn’t allow it, no one could use these ingredients. Just a thought.

    1. Don’t buy bread at the grocery store either then. Bread like Butternut brand on the shelf has Azodicarbonamide in it also.

  2. All I can say Vani is thank you, thank you, thank you!

Shared on Facebook and Twitter, and signed!

I am so happy you are here and are doing this…definitely your Soul Purpose since you are so great at it!

    Hooraaaaay!

    Thanks for all you do

    1. I found foodbabe.com via Alex on infowars.com Ive past on the petition to my family & friends
      🙂 Anks Foodbabe

  3. Azodicarbonamide is used in all fast food breads. And they’re in most breads in the supermarket. Why did you single out Subway?

    1. Because they market themselves as healthy and use phrases like “eat fresh”to fool people. The First Lady’s endorsement of their Kid’s Meal really upset me considering the chemicals in their bread.

      1. As you can see the right wing are the ones doing this and they just exposed themselves. The food the first lady pointed out as healthy at Subway DID NOT INCLUDE THE SANDWICHES.

This is about the right wing hatred of Obama’s wife. That’s why they are not targeting right wing loved places like Chick-Fil-A who has the same ingredient in their bread, Chuck_E-Cheese’ s who uses it in their pizza dough or…get read for this one – LUNCHABLES. Yes, same ingredient. They are focusing the efforts towards places that conservatives hate. It’s blatant as hell and why she shows up on shows like Alex Jones and Infowars – extreme right wing media organizations.

You people are getting played like fools.

      2. Robert, where o where to begin with all of your incorrect statements. Alex Jones is not a right winger- you’ve exposed yourself as totally clueless about him by saying that.
And that pointing out that there are poisonous substances in anything could be bad? What?
Michelle Obama wasn’t endorsing Subway’s sandwiches? Really? What else do they sell there at Subway? Aren’t Subway sandwiches pretty popular? There a much more common brand than Chucky Cheese, and therefore removing this from Subway could pave the way for companies that are smaller to follow, but sure, they should all remove harmful ingredients. So the 1st lady just didn’t mention that the sandwiches are healthy, huh? Why is that do you think? And what food from Subway did she endorse? You are such an idiot to claim that the Food Babe only targets companies who aren’t “on the right.” Your claims surely aren’t fooling anyone with an above-room-temperature IQ.

      3. So much for Robert’s left wing conspiracy theories! Isn’t Chick-Fil-A one of the MOST conservative right wing companies who hate gay people and are a bunch of right wing extremists?
NEW YORK (AP) — Subway says it’s in the process of removing a chemical from its bread as part of an ongoing effort to improve its recipes. The announcement comes after a food blogger launched a petition this week asking the sandwich chain to stop using the ingredient. A representative for Subway says the change was underway before the petition was launched. “The complete conversion to have this product out of the bread will be done soon,” Subway said in a statement, without providing further details. Vani Hari, who runs the FoodBabe.com site, has targeted other food companies including Kraft and Chick-fil-A for the chemicals in their products. In the latest petition targeting Subway, Hari noted that the azodicarbonamide used in its bread is also used to make yoga mats and shoe rubber.

  4. Subway is a good marketer but I wish their food was as “fresh” and as good as they advertise. They have horrible low quality ingredients. When I was uneducated I thought they were the “healthier option” because I bought into the nonsense. I quickly learned that it was just as bad as the burger joints. A good organic burger (made at home) is infinitely better than any Subway or other fast food joint. If you want to eat out try ethnic places like Indian restaurants… they use real ingredients for the most part (except for Canola and toxic potatoes). I try to limit my eating out but when I do I want something that is both okay and enjoyable… Subway is neither!

    1. Funny thing. I sent email challenging to know what fast food is ok? Who beats Subway, It is not published.

      Wonder Why……………..Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

    2. Funny thing. I sent email challenging to know what fast food is ok? Who beats Subway, It is not published.

  5. Hi there, Do you know if this includes Canadian Subways? Although I know we usually follow suit with the EU, being so close to the U.S., I wonder if this affects us too….. ?
    Thanks Food Babe,
    Your Northern Neighbour

    1. Yes – this affects Canadians too! Please spread the word to your friends and family up there.

  6. Kudos to Food Babe!!!!
Signed the petition and stoked to see the number of comments on FB.
I’m not on Twitter so hope someone can start a movement there.
Is there anyway we can get to the First Lady??

BTW, I am not a fan of Subway. Once, many years ago, disgusting. Totally inferior quality of ‘fresh’ items and I remember the bread looking like ground up sawdust – disgusting!!

Why can’t we Americans take more interest in researching how our food is manufactured? If we did there would be way less obesity and health issues. Common sense – just learn how to read label and do not believe all the hype and marketing gimics.

    Thank you, Vani.

    1. Americans do show massive concern, but it all falls to the lobbyists, and “Politicians”. They are bought and paid for by Monsanto. Everyone I talked to around the Seattle Tacoma area, voted YES to label GMO food products, but somehow, the NO votes won. Then I looked at the 3 major contributors to that campaign to NOT label GMO’s….Guess who, and one will surprise you. Monsanto (No surprise), DuPont (No surprise)….Drum Roll…..MICROSOFT!! And no I am not lying, but it is fitting as Bill Gates just purchased 500,000 shares of Monsanto 10 months ago. I also find that soap products now contain ingredients that have no business being in there. Trader Joes sells an “All Natural” soap product, but the main ingredient is TBHQ, a preservative…..which is very carcinogenic. My advice to everyone, Read you ingredient label, and K.I.S.S. Keep It Simple Silly. If you can not pronounce it, then it is probably very bad for you.
      Cheers, Rob

      1. If flat bread and wraps are ok, why does your illustration show a yoga mat wrapped like a wrap or flat bread?

  7. Vani, thank you for this. Signed, posted.

You have a lot of readers now, I’d love to see a petition to the First Lady as well and I’d be happy to sign and post on FB, etc…. no way should she be giving free advertising like this and especially when it’s FALSE.

thanks for all that you do!

  8. Instead of telling these companies “I will forgive you for trying to poison me, if only you will stop doing it”. Why not tell them “Since you tried to poison me, I will NEVER buy you product again.”

  9. I have read these comments and concerns. I do try to eat healthy. Compare Subway items to McDonald’s, Sonic, Pizza Hut, Dominoes, Wendy’s, Chic Fil A, Jimmy Johns, Panera, SCHOOL LUNCHES. I challenge you to this Food Babe, Please list ALL FAST FOOD CHAINS THAT HAVE THIS IN THEIR PRODUCT. It is about choices and balance. No doubt eating “home baked” with CORRECT ingredients IS healthier. But, I am only human. I have a husband, job, kids that have ball games, lessons, practice, homework. There is a time we have to choose fast food. We can control there how much of items (less fat, more greens p.s they are fresh sliced tomatoes and green peppers). I guess Super Mom does live. Nice to meet you. PS challenge, what about other fast food places? Oh and thanks for leaving out Flat bread, wraps and salads were ok.

  10. Wow! Thanks for leading the charge in helping bring true healthy options to our big chain restaurants. With so many busy people in our country, we need a big chain to take some responsibility like this!!

  11. Signed the Subway petition-thanks!! I share your “Eat Yoga Mat?” video in all my awareness efforts 🙂 Can you sign a petition I just started as well? I want Aldi to adhere to the same standards here as they do in the UK! Please read to see how carrying GM products violates several aspects of their “Corporate Responsibility Policy” Thanks Food Babe, you rock! https://secure.avaaz.org/en/petition/Aldi_Make_US_Aldi_stores_GM_free_like_your_UK_Aldi_stores/

  12. On your blog, does this mean that everyone you advertise on your site you endorse for being healthy? I wondered does Ragu sauce have ANYTHING in it I should worry about with my health? I thought you had blogged about and ingredient earlier.

    Thanks for any info would be helpful:}

  13. Vani, THANK YOU!! It’s so encouraging to see food advocates such as yourself taking on these big companies. Subway should be a healthy alternative when we’re on the go but after reading your first article about the chemicals in the bread we crossed them off our list. It would be nice to have them as an option again!

    I’ll be signing the petition!

  14. Hi Vani! So glad you are doing this. I keep trying to sign the petition but keep getting ‘error on page’ message. Any suggestion? Anyone? I went to petition both from your email and also from a googled link but had same error message. Thx!

  15. Soo glad you wrote this! About a year ago I realized every time I ate at Subway, I could barely keep myself awake and focused after. I researched online and heard about this harmful ingredient. Sure enough, when I stopped eating there, I have not had that feeling again. My 7 year old likes Subway, and also has asthma, go figure! Subway never again! Thanks for watching out for the kids!!

  16. Great to no someone out there who actually cares . incredible work from the foodbabe please keep pushing these very important issues. Let the fight for healthy food in our markets continue. Support the food babe. One can make a difference. All can make a change. Thank you. Vani hari.

  17. Everyone NEEDS to know this: Azodicarbonamide is found in all breads. Not just Subway. If you buy a loaf of bread at the store, eat a burger at a fast food chain, roll at a restaurant, sandwich at another chain, IT IS IN THERE. Things would be more effective if you targeted AZODICARBONAMIDE , instead of singling out ONE food chain. Of the Major Chains Subway is “fresh” in this consumers opinion. So Babe lets get real. Expose EVERYWHERE it is at if you truly have the consumer in mind. UNLESS YOU ARE BAKING ALL YOUR BREAD OR FINDING THE NEEDLE IN A HAYSTACK THAT DOESN’T USE IT, YOU ARE EATING IT.

    1. Ray, I think the goal is to focus on the big fish so that the everyone else follows suit. If Subway announced it was not going to use this ingredient in their breads, and advertised their sandwiches as being healthier – compared to the competition – it would force the others to remove it also so that they could have a marketing edge.

      1. source: wikipedia.org
The principal use of azodicarbonamide is in the production of foamed plastics as an additive. The thermal decomposition of azodicarbonamide results in the evolution of nitrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and ammonia gases, which are trapped in the polymer as bubbles to form a foamed article.Azodicarbonamide is used as a food additive, a flour bleaching agent and improving agent. It reacts with moist flour as an oxidizing agent.[2] The main reaction product is biurea,[3] a derivative of urea, which is stable during baking. Secondary reaction products include semicarbazide[4] and ethyl carbamate.[5] The United States permits the use of azodicarbonamide at levels up to 45 ppm.[6] In Australia[citation needed] the use of azodicarbonamide as a food additive is banned. In Singapore, use is punishable by up to 15 years in prison and a fine of $450,000

    2. Just wanted to say I pulled out my organic bread from whole foods to check and see if Azodicarbonamide was in it and it is not. As much as I would LOVE to bake my bread from scratch, I have three kids 7, 5, and 2 and I just don’t have time…. It is possible to feed my kids healthy and not have this ingredient in the bread. Just wanted to point out that you can buy a loaf of bread without Azodicarbonamide.

  18. Tonight as I listened to Alex Jones, I was overwhelmed with emptions after listening to you Foodbabe. I’ve always known that our food has been poisoned with these additives and I have become aware of GMOs from listening to the Alex Jones show. But to actually sit and listen to someone speak on it and sound so sincere, I felt upset with myself as a parent of 2 wonderful children. I am the one who is buying them this food, I am the one who is taking my family to these corporate chains and feeding them this poison with the knowledge of these poisons being in the foods. I am a disabled vet of 8 yrs. active service and know about the politics that go on that Mr. Jones talks about with strategically manipulating us through our mind, body, and soul. Our food supply is the most easiest targets and the biggest way to bank with making money. I don’t honestly think our government needs to be in charge of our food supply as well as these big food corporations. our farmers need to be in control of their farms that supply our food supply! The state should over see things to make sure that the farmers abide by a health code to the public, but not run things. I am currently utilizing my GI Bill towards my BA in Child Psychology because I believe our well being starts with our children and their environmental developmental experiences in growth comes from what us adults present to them, what we offer them to experience and eating healthy and being aware what we are eating and then changing they we eat will definitely help build a strong human being mind, body, and soul. The sad part about eating healthy is that in the grocery stores the healthy food is a lot more expensive than the junk and food with all those deadly cancer medical problem causing additives. As an example even on the Info Wars store, I purchased a bottle of the iodine and that was pretty steep for my fix income of my disability check, I would love to by more things but it is too expensive. Sorry to write an essay, but after listening to you today charged me to actually start making a difference of what my family and I eat, I want to live long and watch my children grow and then watch my grandchildren, and maybe great grandchildren, while I still keep my oath I took When I enlisted in the Army In 1997 as a teenager fresh out of high school. Thank you ago Foodbabe!

    1. I hear ya. But with Alex’s help waking us, Foodbabe giving us ssuggestions & guiding us we can eat healthy, pass that on to our children, and comenss waking & teaching others, Thank you for your service, sorry you had to get involved with those F#@! * who sent you over there.
      God Bless you & yours
      Hap

  19. I know most of you are past this phase from reading your comments ,but from a (first time caller) 🙂 point of view. Arhgggggg!!!!!!! How’d we get here? Why do so many companies take such advantages of us? Makes me think , as friends have told me , They’re friggin nuts and there soft killing all of us. No ! They’re behond nuts , thats just being kind , why should I. Its saddenes my hart to think. God bless America/ God bless you all. Keep up the great work Foodbabe.com &
    Infowars.com

    1. It saddens MY heart that you can’t spell HEART! I guess the education system is taking advantage of us also! bwa ha ha ha

  20. It would be nice if you would go after Jimmy John’s too. They have he same ingredient in their sandwich bread. :/

    1. It sure seems this site is really used to just target individual companies for some unexplained reason. Monsanto is the source and Monsanto should be the target. They will target Subway but not Sara Lee? Why not, they’re using the same stuff.

Then again I hear she was on Alex Jones which is a right wing conspiracy theorist so I have a strange suspicion this is just another site that uses peoples anger about something but only focuses it on places the right wing are mad with and won’t focus on any of the other violators nor the actual source of the problem.

  21. Food Babe, why do u not petition congress instead? Only seems right since this is in all fast food and most loaves of bread on store shelves include it. Seems like a band aide ( or which hunt for Subway) instead of true change. The way you make it appear is that only Subway uses it. There are 2 types of this. One IS food grade approved by government (not that it makes it ok) Make real chg. petition Congress!

  22. Well, as usual these days, I have to try to calm the hysteria. It looks like those of you who have joined the army of General Custer, I mean the food babe, are walking into a gun battle armed with butter knives again. Do a little research for yourselves.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Azodicarbonamide Pay particular attention to the conversion to another compound that is easily excreted by the body. Also, I’ve read somewhere that the average person may have problems after eating around 5,000,000 slices of bread. I’m not saying that some people won’t have a reaction to this stuff.

I don’t have a dog in this fight and don’t really care. I will continue to eat bread in moderation. Why live in constant fear?

    1. Azodicarbonamide is used as a food additive, a flour bleaching agent and improving agent. The thermal decomposition of azodicarbonamide results in the evolution of nitrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and ammonia gases, which are trapped in the polymer as bubbles to form a foamed article.

      1. Just saying that there seems to be other, more important things to worry about. If people want to be scared to eat anything, then they can be if that’s what they choose. It is an unneccessary choice though. Without this additive I have read that bread will last 3-4 days intead of 10 days or so. I don’t really care to eat a whole loaf of bread in 3-4 days. That can’t be too good for you either. I do like the fact that Singapore is very good about enforcing their laws with strict enough penalties that the criminal may think twice before committing a crime.

    2. Fear rules the foodie blogger’s life. They are terrified of chemistry and they’re about to make life horrible for those people who have their fear under control.

  23. hope that people see the deception and horror our elected officials allow to go on in every facet of our life. So go to these stores and spend all your money on the so called organic foods which come from other countrys (good luck with that) no regulations or oversight and enjoy breathing in the Chemtrails on your ride home. I have a little farm of cows, goats, chickens, ducks, pigs here is what I learned, good luck finding feed that has no gmo and if you wanted to purchase my chickens for food you better pony up $8 a pound for chicken breast My chickens free range (eat bugs, grass) and still eat pellets (gmo) made by purina or nutrina. It is impossible that you go to the store and find chicken breast on sale for $1.99 on sale. God only knows what that is and you hamburger lovers they can slaughter horses in the U.S. now for animal food and can EXPORT it to mexico which in turn can repackage it and sell it back to us for consumption Check ALDI store for horse meat allegations

  24. Hand cuff every single one of them imprison them, drain their bank accounts and use the money toward reformed health care. Realistically, I know that will never happen. I’m just sayin!

  25. Just curious why you are wasting all these efforts on a sandwich shop when your sole and entire focus should be the Monsanto Chemical Company. The are the source of these chemicals and taking them down eliminates it for all food manufacturers. It’s like you don’t really want to solve the problem because you are not focused on the real solution – only on attacking one small segment of the corporate empire in this country.

This is such a waste of time.

  26. well thank u for this information it may be very useful to my 16 year old daughters health we have thought of everything in the past almost 3 months tht has changed in our household and now tht i read this her problem never started until we started buying d italiano bread it started in her eyes and then infected all her skin from head to toe we had her hat the hospital 3 times in our home town and 3 times at sick childrens hospital in toronto she has missed almost 3 months of school and has been sick with her skin and eyes infected for most of tht time the only thing they could think of was a super infection because of her eczema she has been harrassed by bullies on facebook saying she has stds and other nasty things today feb 5 is the first day she has been well enough to go to school in almost 3 months and now i see this about this azodicarbonamide and it makes me sick to my stomach we thought she was going to die she was so sick so it this is what caused her to lose 4 credits and be shunned by alot of people i will be taking this further thank u for the info i will be on this til the end i would like any help u can provide me thank u

  27. Subway has almost zero anything healthy for you. The meat alone is all processed, and contains very high level of Sodium Nitrite, which studies are now showing to be the biggest contributor to Breast and Prostate cancer. The rest of their products are without a doubt GMO. We have to also change the market, by simply not purchasing their products and force them to change. POTUS should be impeached alone for signing “The Monsanto Protection Act”.

  28. I think strategically it makes the most sense to target Subway. They are the largest fast food company in the US (by # of stores) and by getting them to change it will start others to re-think their ingredients. Look at the GMO issue in cereal. Post actually got non-GMO project verified and Cheerios (looking to beat them to the announcement) had a huge press release a few days before. Cheerios is actually lying because they only changed some words on a box, but nonetheless it got Soccer Moms to start thinking about things.

Influencing the FDA, USDA, Congress, etc. will never work. The millions and millions of dollars Big Food, Big Chemical, etc. pay to lobbyist will not stand a chance against an online petition. The only way is to get consumers to make their voice heard. In America there is only one language and that is MONEY.

  29. Hi Vani,

I didn’t read all the posts, but I assume they are using this chemical in their “gluten free” bread also?

    Thanks.

  30. I just created a Petition on WHITEHouse.gov for the First Lady to Publicly renounce her endorsement of Subway as healthy for using this toxin..I heard you on Alex Jones and know your busy so I made one…If we get 100k signatures they have to respond..hope this helps..GREAT JOB EVERYONE..

    http://wh.gov/lRzOq

  31. Attn: Foodbabe

I seen you yesterday on Alex Jones’ Infowars site & later called Subway’s HQ & left a message for the heads of Subway that I was PO’d by their Evil/Criminal behavior & was going to stop buying from their stores at least until they cleaned up their act.

Many people for years have told me there is nothing “We the People” can do about these Commie/Nazi type corporations. I tell them they are wrong, that we just have to hit them where it hurts, their pocket books/Balance Sheet.

Now it appears within 24 hours we have gotten Subway’s management’s attention! LOL:)

Thank you for bring this matter to “We the People” attention!

From the AP about 20 minutes ago:

Subway says it’s removing chemical from bread; says not in response to petition

NEW YORK (AP) — Subway says it’s in the process of removing a chemical from its bread as part of an ongoing effort to improve its recipes. The announcement comes after a food blogger launched a petition this week asking the sandwich chain to stop using the ingredient. 32. Hope my other post didn’t get lost?

And I hope people can now get behind getting the toxins out of the beer!

The founders of the USA founded the nation in part in taverns & drank low proof alcohol in part because it was much safer then the water.

The water is likely even worst today so if some of us want a beer we do not want Toxic Sewage in the Beer.

How do all this more then 280 toxic industrial chemicals in people blood effect their behavior, Driving, Judges, Juries, Lawmakers? No doubt not for the better!

  33. Great site. But I’m completely demoralized. I can’t take it anymore. I’m overwhelmed. Now you’re adding something else to this already long list: fluoride, msg, red no. 5, hfcs, nutrisweet, pesticides, margarine, gmo, etc. and on and on and on. I literally can’t take it anymore. I’m done. We are moving to a farm soon. We will have heirloom seeds. We will move to land with a natural spring. I’m never buying this crap again. My gosh. If people would just vote with their dollars, this would end. Those people really are zombies.

  34. How about all those nitrites in Subway’s meat? That meat even on good bread is WAY bad for you!

  35. How about all those nitrites in Subway’s meats? Even eaten on “good” bread, still VERY bad for you.

  36. Regarding “eat fresh” claims by subway – what about the meat? Isn’t it full of preservatives?? Also the “chicken breast”. They are all exact uniform sizes, that is not how chicken is found in nature. Also they have a hotdog like texture – yuk! Not exactly fresh and natural.

  37. So can we please have a petition to McDonald’s now? They use azodicarbonamide in their bread too.
