Quick & Easy Home Baked Pizza

Instead of putting up a fight today – I’m gonna join the US Congress in their recent declaration – Pizza is a Vegetable!

This statement becomes completely true, when you start off with a “flour free” whole foods crust like a sprouted grain tortilla and load a big bowl of vegetables on top.

I have a feeling this pizza will become a staple in your household, like it has mine.  The freshness in taste goes beyond any frozen pizza could ever deliver.  When I suggest one of these pizzas to my husband for dinner, I usually hear a big “OH YEAH!” come out of his mouth. When I make this for other family members or friends, they immediately request the recipe.

This recipe will bring upon cheers from your loved ones, friends and family!  They will all LOVE it.

Food Babe’s Pizza is a Vegetable Pizza

Serves: 1
Ingredients
  • 1 Ezekiel sprouted wheat tortilla
  • 4 tablespoons of tomato/pizza sauce
  • 1 garlic clove minced
  • ¼ cup onions chopped
  • ¼ cup green peppers chopped
  • ¼ cup broccoli chopped
  • 5 black olives sliced
  • 1 ounce of organic mozzarella cheese (Optional)
  • ½ ounce of raw parmesan cheese (Optional)
  • crushed red pepper for sprinkling
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees
  2. Place thawed tortilla on large pan and place in oven – 3-4 mins to allow crust to harden a bit
  3. Once tortilla has started to slightly crisp on edges, remove from oven
  4. Place sauce and garlic on crust first
  5. Then top with suggested toppings or other toppings, being careful not to overload the crust
  6. Next place cheese on top (Optional)
  7. Cook for 10 mins or until cheese is bubbly
Notes
Enjoy with a big green salad. ***Please buy all organic ingredients if possible***

Hey food babe and friends I am hoping that you all may be able to help me ever since eating organic we’ve been able to find anything and everything we ate before any organic aisle or make it ourselves however I cannot seem to find anything to substitute pepperoni is there any one that might know where I can order a healthier version of pepperoni my kids absolutely love it and that’s the only thing I can’t seem to find

    1. We even made her own pizza rolls the other night and they were such a huge hit with the adults if they wanted my recipe and when I told them everything was organic they could hardly believe it honestly nobody believed that they were organic

    2. Applegate Farms makes a pepperoni but I haven’t found it in stores near me yet. Check their website (applegate.com) for their product locator, maybe you’ll get lucky! Also, most grocery stores are open to requests – can’t hurt to request they stock it!

    3. Organic only means – grown without poisons and in better soil. Why wouldn’t it be as delicious or more so than non-organic food??? I’m confused.

      1. Tami, My take on it is, organic also refers to non-gmo, non-hybridized food as well as no pesticides. Many of our veggies and ingredients in conventional grocery stores have been so “messed with” that they even lose some quality of flavor. So, eating food in their original state can be more flavorful. Along with that, and I believe this is a big part of it (it is for me anyway, and I’m sure for others as well), it just feels good eating clean, unadulterated food, and I enjoy it more than eating things I know have been tweaked & treated in the name of “bigger & better” (not to mention, more lucrative for the producer).       2. Thanks, Jillian. I completely agree but I think you misunderstood my comment. It was in reply to Amber’s post – she stated “they were such a huge hit with the adults if they wanted my recipe and when I told them everything was organic they could hardly believe it honestly nobody believed that they were organic”.
        That statement makes no sense. Maybe if she made gluten free I could see people being surprised but organic?

      3. Pizza is usually associated with being unhealthy so they were surprised that it was in fact a “healthy” pizza.

    4. Agree with everyone else, try Applegate. I know they sell it at Whole Foods, but I’ve also seen their products at my local Safeway store.

    5. I have a great pepperoni and sausage substitute that I slice up and put on my organic pizza – It’s called Tofurkey Italian sausage. It’s soo good! I get it at Trader Joe’s. It’s vegan but you’d never guess it! It’s made with organic tofu and non GMO ingrediants. It’s really yummy in other Italian dish’s also!

  3. Does anyone know what brand of tomato or pizza sauce is used for this recipe? I really want to try it but want to make sure I’m using the right thing.

    1. Any brand is great — just remember to buy any tomato anything in a JAR and not a can as the acid in tomatoes will eat away at the BPA lining in cans and leach those chemicals into the food! I shop at Fred Meyer (Kroger in some areas) and just buy the organic store brand stuff. Rising Moon is a great brand, if you want a quality (but pricier) option.

    2. You can also make your own sauce.

      We buy tomatoes in bulk, boil them a bit so we can peel the skin, and then blend them by themselves or with other taste enhancers we desire… i.e. jalapenos, cerranos, garlic, etc.

    3. why not just use fresh tomatoes. slice them and sprinkle fresh basil and fresh oregano on them. thats what i use to replace tomato sauce.

  4. I think FB would say any organic tomato or pizza sauce you can find. A jar of
    “spaghetti sauce” also works .

  5. How does the tortilla hold up when cooked? Is it crispy or soft? Does it fall apart when cut? Thanks.

    1. My tortilla was crispy! It didn’t fall apart, either. Just make sure to cook it a bit before adding toppings.

    2. It comes out crispy, depending on how long you cook it. But it can burn quickly because of how thin it is so watch it! Delicious flat bread pizza, my family loved it!

  6. Oh yeah! And add or substitute spinach, mushrooms, roasted red peppers. The variations are endless. Thanks for the sprouted Ezekial tortilla idea! I have been cheating with Amy’s organic frozen spinach pizza and add fresh organic veggies, garlic and cheese but this is even better!

  7. I can’t use the Ezekiel tortillas because on of my kids is allergic to lentil and I believe they contain sprouted lentil. Is there an alternative store bought tortilla or pizza crust that is just as healthy. She is also allergic to chick peas and nuts! Thanks!

    1. Have no idea if these suggestions will work because some do have seeds. Sami’s Bakery in Tampa (can order online) makes the most heavenly gluten-free crust (it does have flax seeds though) that is amazing. There are cool raw pizza recipes out there without nuts (most do have seeds like chia, sunflower, flax though). There are a few without but your kids may not be into the whole raw thing. Have seen a recipe for a cooked cauliflower, salt and egg tortilla/flatbread (just 3 ingredients). Trader Joes has brown rice tortillas. Think the ingredients would work for your child but you may not live anywhere near a Trader Joes. Not sure if this helped you at all but hopefully it might for someone.

    2. Why not try a cauliflower crust? I am celiac so this base works for me. I simply blend raw cauliflower until it has a rice consistency, 1 cup of cauliflower “rice” add one egg and I use organic ricotta rather than the mozzarella most recipes call for (3/4 cup), some oregano and black pepper and one clove of crushed garlic … Mix together and press on a pizza tray. Precook the base until brown … Then add whatever toppings you want. Press it thin to get a firmer crust or thicker for a Pizza pie effect. The cauliflower crust actually cooks to a bread like texture and is delicious.

  8. Can’t wait to make this! Can anyone verify if the veggies are cooked before being placed on the tortilla or do they all go on raw? Thanks!

    1. I have not yet made this pizza, but this recipie cooking time for topping is ten minutes, so if the ingredients have been chopped and raw I would imagine the topping maybe be crunchy not soft?
      Personally when I make home made pizza I like to fry some ingredients first by caramelizing the onions, and then add peppers, mushrooms and garlic. Any meat I use is precook before hand. So for my pizza the final bake in oven is to heat thru and melt cheese.

      1. I do not cook the vegetables before going in the over. just delightful!

  9. Made this for dinner tonight and it was amazing! I put red peppers, mushrooms, black olives, and onions on mine and it was delicious. Crust was crisp and I was able to slice it like a pizza. Next time will add extra mushrooms. Definitely a keeper :D. Thanks!

  11. I have made this recipe several times in the last few weeks and it is one of my favourite recipes of all time. My husband and three year old daughter LOVE this and we have dubbed it cracker pizza. You can personalize it in pretty much any way you want to.
    Thank you Food Babe for the great recipes and for all of the hard work you are doing exposing the bad ingredients found in processed and restaurant foods. I wish there had been someone when I was growing up to inform me about just how bad some of this food is, but I will be raising my daughter with this knowledge and she will be healthier and happier for it.

  13. Hi… Just a basic (may be foolish) question…. In Step 7 under ‘Instructions’… what does ‘COOK’ mean…. baking for 10 minutes ? or heat it in pan for 10 mins ?. Please clarify.

  15. Beware of using the correct cheese. Colorado dairies have excess milk so they turn it into powered milk to sell to cheese makers. Best Cheese to buy is organic. You can call and ask producer if their cheese is made out of whole organic milk or reconstituted powdered milk. Best to make your own cheese.

    The Weston A. Price Foundation (WAPF) suggests avoiding statins altogether and instead taking other steps to regulate cholesterol levels and metabolism. These steps include avoiding inflammatory trans fats; avoiding refined sugars, supplementing with cod liver oil; consuming plenty of healthy saturated fats; taking evening primrose, borage or black currant oil; eating plenty of foods high in bioavailable copper, including liver; taking coconut oil and coconut products and avoiding reduced-fat and powdered milk products, which contain oxidized cholesterol that damages arterial walls. Powdered milk leads to cataracts too.

  16. Anyone know where one can buy sprouted Ezekiel tortillas? I don’t think Wal-Mart sells any Ezekiel products, and I’ve only found sliced Ezekiel bread at Trader Joe’s. I would guess that Whole Foods might carry the tortillas, but I don’t like expensive everything is there. Any recommendations?

  18. LOVE the investigating you are doing in to what the big food companies are putting in to our food. Keep up the good work. Also, have you tried making cauliflower pizza crust? This is now my go to crust when we have an urge to have pizza and my family now prefers is over the flour crust. A great alternative, as long as you don’t have an aversion to dairy. Cheers!

  21. I’m gluten free and keep Trader Joes Brown Rice Tortillas in the freezer after losing 2 packs to mold before even trying them. Some articles I’ve read suggest that the sprouted grain breads and tortillas are gluten free. Anyone know for sure?

    1. Sprouted grain is not gluten free. However sometimes celiacs can handle them, especially in the case of true sourdough. Sprouted grain breads can be gluten free if the grain is gluten free.

  25. I am glad that you use raw cheese because the commercial one that we find at stores contains aluminum in the form of sodium aluminum phosphate. Since it is used to process the cheese, it is not required to be listed as an ingredient but it constitutes 3% of the final product. We can absorb 30 times more aluminum from eating cheese than from getting a vaccine.

  26. I love broccoli on my pizza too. Why do I always get the strangest looks when I order it? I prefer to make pizza at home so I know all ingredients are organic. I refuse to eat out anywhere that does not offer broccoli as a pizza topping.

  28. i have been making it often!!!! i started recently to skip the first part to place the tortillas without toppings in da oven so i can keep it in longer with the toppings on or it’ll be too crunchy, in that case i fold it like a taco . Latest i made was feta, black olive and artichoke! All organic! yum! THANKS!

  29. Hi. The homemade pizza is fine but no can do for the “WHEAT” tortilla. I cannot no longer tolerate Soy ,Wheat, food dyes like red 40,yellow5,etcI also stop eating at ” all” fast food restaurants and barely eat at others anymore..There of course has to be a alternative such as making your own dough or buy the Gluten free flour to make pizza, pancakes or waffles and cake. I am willing to try that but it is pricey unless you buy from a store that sell flour loose and you buy in any quantity much you want. The store sells organic and natural ingredients such as spices ,teas and coffee.

  30. I think your recipe sounds great until you get to the peppers. All peppers are heavily sprayed with pesticides and herbicides and this is absorbed into the skin of the pepper, which is what you eat. It cannot be washed off as it’s part of the pepper. ALL peppers should be ORGANIC ONLY! They are on the EWG’s ‘dirty dozen’ list.
    So…if you’re talking about eating healthy…and I think you are…you need to make sure your pepper’s are ORGANIC.

    1. Hey, if you grow or find organic green peppers just dice them up (all of them) and put the extra in a canning jar with a good lid. Stays great in the freezer for months and are easy to use when prepared ahead of freezing.

  31. We tried your version of healthy pizza last night and my 3 yr old and 6 yr old barely spoke while they scarfed it down! We actually all agree that we enjoyed this version way more than the other greasy versions. Which is a big deal for us since we are pizza lovers! We did add grass fed organic ground beef to it. DELICIOUS! We ate it again for lunch today and decided it will be our friday night go-to meal for family night. 🙂 Thanks so much!   33. The pizza sounded great, but the “flour free” tortilla concerned me, my sister has to eat a gluten free diet. So I went to the Food For Life website and found that the Ezekiel sprouted wheat tortilla is not gluten free. I followed the link to their gluten free products and found that all their gluten free products have xanthan gum, cellulose and/or cellulose gum in them. Not the ingredients I was looking for.

  34. I made this tonight (minus the peppers and onion) for my 3 and 1 year olds…quick, easy, nutritious, and SO GOOD! Both girls loved it, as did I! This recipe proves that there is no good reason to feed your family junk just because you’re in a hurry. Thank you, Food Babe!

  36. I enjoy your articles and recipes, but for me just no flour is not good enough. Needs to be completely grain-free. Too many bad health effects of including wheat, barely, rye, or oats in the diet. I wish you would recognize that fact and adjust your recipes accordingly.

  40. Any recommendations for a substitute for the pizza sauce? I am highly sensitive to tomatoes and streer as far away from them as I can. But what other kind of sauce or whatever would be good as a substitute in this recipe?

  41. Tomato powder tastes like fresh tomato, and you can reconstitute it to the consistency of tomato sauce, tomato paste – even make ketchup from it.

  42. Great website and tons of information. My only comment would be a question-why not give nutritional information with your recipes? Yes, it is more work, buy those interested in cleaner, healthy eating may be interested in exact numbers. i cook in a very organic, non-additive way for clients, so most do not ask for this information, however, when asked , I do and will provide all the ingredients and the nutritional information.
