How To Save Yourself From Dreaded Post-Travel Bloat!

If you follow me on Instagram, you know that I travel a lot and spend a lot of time in airports. Although I love traveling for both work and pleasure, I hate most of the food found at airports! There is so much processed food, GMOs and the meals are loaded with a ton of sugar and sodium! That’s why I love to bring my own food with me when I am traveling as much as possible. It’s crucial to stay hydrated and keep your circulation going strong so you don’t retain a lot of water and experience that dreaded bloated feeling after a long flight.

In this short video I show you my go-to wrap that’s really easy to make, super tasty, perfect for traveling and will help with that dreaded post-travel bloat. When I open this wrap up to eat on the plane, people always ask me where I got this amazingly delicious and nutritious food! Make this wrap before your next flight – It’s sooo much better than the options at most airports. Don’t get caught with your Food Babe pants down and always have food with you!

Watch me make one of my favorite travel food recipes:

Food Babe's Airplane Wrap

Author:
Serves: 1
Ingredients
  • 1 organic sprouted whole grain wrap (or brown rice wrap)
  • 1 teaspoon dijon mustard
  • ½ avocado, sliced
  • 2 romaine lettuce leaves
  • ¼ red bell pepper, sliced
  • 2 organic sandwich pickle slices
  • 1 shredded carrot
Instructions
  1. Spread dijon mustard on your wrap.
  2. Top it with avocado slices, lettuce leaves, peppers, pickles and shredded carrot.
  3. Wrap it up and seal in a piece of parchment paper.
Notes
For traveling, I recommend putting the parchment-wrapped sandwich in a clear plastic bag along with an ice pack. This should easily get through airport security.
***Please choose all organic ingredients if possible***

More tips for bringing food on a plane:

  • Don’t wrap your food in aluminum foil, as the TSA will probably stop you and it could delay your travels!
  • Make my In Flight Ginger Tea which is great for circulation – recipe here
  • Pack a large empty water bottle and fill it up after going through security and before you get on the plane. It’s important to drink a lot of water!
  • Bring along some fresh fruits and veggies, such as apples, bananas and avocados. Just wash them at home or in your hotel room before you put them in your bag.
  • Check out this extensive list of healthy travel snacks to bring on board.
  • I have a lot more tips for you in this post along with a list of recipes that pack well for traveling.

    1. Hi!
Thank you for the food wrap tip on traveling and eating healthy.
I will be going on vacation soon and will surely make this wrap.
      Love your Life and
      Live your Life
      Thanks So Much

  1. Foodbabe,

Can you review ingredients in Vega post workout vegan protein powder? I read your previous entry (after purchasing Vega) and I don’t want to be eating anything awful for me. Their new formula contains ‘inulin’ which can upset my stomach so I’ll start slowly. Just started following you, love all of your posts! Thanks!

  2. Love this! Always struggle with finding something decent at airports. This is something I would make at home….why haven’t I thought to make and take?? Such a great idea…thanks!

  3. I think you’re doing a great job and Ive really enjoy and appreciate all you do. Keep up the great work! xoxo

  4. I loved the video. Thank you. I have a long flight on Thursday and will make this to take along with me.

  5. Great idea, you are so smart. I would add herbs and black beans for variety also. Keep up the good work. Love your e-mails. I read them all.

  6. I’ve been taking my own food on the plane for years. But this is a great new idea for something healthy and easy to make. In case anyone travels through Denver, there is a healthy restaurant called Root Down in concourse C. They have gluten free and vegetarian options, too.

    1. Hey Donny,

Com’on man………..One thing I “hate” is the world of political correctness we live in today. I also “hate” the fact that everyone today is so easily offended.

Vani, this looks like a great wrap. I might try it with a little Ranch dressing and the addition of sesame seeds of chopped nuts. Thanks.

  7. Loved this video! Not traveling anytime soon, but made me want to make an airplane wrap! Keep up the good work, Food Babe.

  8. Love this! Our grandchildren live in Oregon (yes they have read your book, and forced their parents to buy organic food)…. the airport in Portland has great food… even a restaurant that serves (mostly) Organic Food! It is called Cafe Yum and is only found in towns in Oregon as of now….

  9. Hey Vani,

Have you tried making fermented pickles? It’s so easy and it’s only a 3 day ferment! I make similar wraps like this all the time and just throw in what ever I have in the fridge. Thank you for your blog, it has changed my life!

    1. I haven’t tried that yet, but this wrap would be great with those, or some sauerkraut or kimchi too!

  10. the video is CLOSED CAPTIONED … yaaaa 😉 thanks … great ideas for travel of any kind. again thanks

  11. Thank you for this valuable info–esp. the tip on the parchment paper vs. foil. Anyway, I agree with the previous commenter: don’t skin your carrots! You’re the best!

  12. How about putting in some healthy hummus for extra protein!
    Thanks for your Work Vani!

  13. This looks great! We have been packing our own food for quite a while. It is a GREAT! idea. The parchment paper is something I hadn’t thought of. Thanks.

Just one comment, with all the issues with antibiotic resistant bacteria and promoting the good bacteria in your gut, I recommend NOT peeling your carrots. Wash with soap and water, but leaving the outside layer allows the good bacteria from the soil to be part of the organic “package”. This is the soil that provides our gut flora with the awesome bacteria that promotes good gut health. Remember, good health starts from the gut!

As I continue to expand my health coaching business, I will remember this great video as an example of how to continually eat well no matter where you are.

  14. Good Day Vani,

My boyfriend and I are looking for some place in the world to travel to and I was hoping you could give your suggestion. Just like you I live a chemical free lifestyle. I think the last time I gave in to some toxic food was in September 2014, now nothing gets put into my body till I read ALL the ingredients. My food lifestyle seems complicated to so many people but I feel I have found a way to quickly sum up how I eat, drink and which household and personal care products I use. I simply say “Dose this food/drink/product contain poison?” If yes, I do not consume or use it.

My question for you is, of all the places you have travelled to, where did you find it was the most easiest to get organic/local (unsprayed) food?

I would really appreciate your suggestions in helping me find somewhere in the world I can travel to and still be able to eat. I am open to all types of cultures and food. I just simply do not want to consume poison.

P.S. What brand of pickles do you use in that wrap? I have yet to find a pickle brand I approve of all the ingredients.

    Thank you,

    Beans

    1. I have always thought that the food utopia for you folks who insist on all natural would be places like Ethiopia, Somolia, Sudan and the Congo. There are no pesticides, GMO’s, unnatural flavorings and additives, no poisons in the water or pasteurized milk, etc. I don’t think Monsanto has planted a flag in any of these countries so it is perfectly safe for you. The food is so fresh you might have to catch it to eat it. Of course the average lifespan in those countries ranges from less than 50 in the Congo to 62 in Ethiopia but at least it won’t be the food that kills you. It could be the lack of food as history has shown. Good luck and safe travels to you!

  16. Love this video and plan to make the wrap for our upcoming travel!
I am a subscriber and really am trying to make healthy lunch and after school snacks for my teenage kids..my son craves sugar snacks (hence is a bit overweight) and we are constantly trying to watch him and my Daughter likes junk food but tends to eat more vegetarian(not much meat) and is skinny. Any videos/ideas for healthy food and snacks that appeal to teenagers would be much appreciated!
Thank you so much for all you do!

  17. Wow! I didn’t know you could get food past check out. I’ll have to try that now! Thank you Food Babe!!!! Great tips and the wrap looks awesome!

  18. Thank you Vani! Proof it only takes a little thought, prep and & time to eat healthy anywhere we go! There’s no excuse. xoxo

  19. Caution with the ice pack. I tried using a small lunch box type store- bought refreezeable ice pak in a small bag with medication when flying recently. Ok for departure because it was frozen solid. On return trip not so lucky. my ice pak was cold but not solid so TSA confiscated my ice pak because of potential danger of transporting liquids etc. Hey..I understand security so was not to upset..just did not know all rules. Ice pak in garbage but I returned home safe! Win win!

  20. I agree with Keri in the no peel deal! Lol!
It was awesome to have the inside scoop as to how to get food thru security. We are traveling across country the end of the month! Thank u!!!! Videos are always helpful!

  21. My son eats wraps like this for lunch in place of unhealthy sandwiches. But I didn’t know we could take food on the plane. We travel frequently and will start doing this. Thank you for the video!!

  22. I am definitely going to make the wrap. Your shredded carrots will add a nice crunch! I forwarded your recipe to my family & friends.

  23. Haha, that video was super cute! Love all the ingredients in this wrap…real food that’s actually tasty = way more likely I’ll make it. Thanks Food Babe 🙂

  24. I would just like to say it is so refreshing to see so many positive, uplifting comments in this forum! Thanks for the idea about the wrap, Vani!

  25. Thank you for making this video! I will definitely be making this wrap on my next trip.
I’ve really struggled in the airport… Especially being gluten free. I’m pregnant now and it’s so important to have healthy choices.
    Awesome idea!

  26. Anything sprouted has recently been called “unsafe” due to bacterial growth, not beneficial now.
Rice has been given a “bad Wrap” due to arsenic levels where it is grown and harvested and treated.

Whole wheat is corrupted and other grains as well. It has NOT been recommended to eat by many food and nutritional experts.

  27. Hi Food Babe,
According to their website, Virgin America has some organic options available for purchase on board. Do you think you can look into this and see if some of their food is legit? On the other hand, maybe it’s time we start sending petitions to airlines asking for some organic options for some of us busy travelers. Thank you for all that you do; I can’t wait to try this recipe.

  28. hey, great video! awesome tips. I will try that recipe! I love wraps.i dislike airport food as well and try to bring food with me so I appreciate the recipe

  29. Thanks Vannie. But why isn’t your husband in any of those pictures with you traveling? Isn’t he healthy enough looking for that photo-shoot with you?

  30. That was the cutest video! Loved it and will be definitely making this for my Hawaii trip in May. Thanks food babe! Keep em coming!

  31. Hi Vani! Thanks for another great tip, the wrap sounds awesome (and a WHOLE LOT cheaper & healthier than anything you can find in an airport. The questions is… where’s the protein? I try to eat a certain amount of healthy proteins daily but there aren’t any in this wrap. What would you recommend?

  32. LUV U VANI! SAW YOU AT A BOOK SIGNING IN LAGUNA BEACH LAST YEAR, BEEN A FAN EVER SINCE. WE TRAVEL ALOT TOO SO I LUV UR WRAP IDEA BUT I ALWAYS GET STUCK CUZ I AM ALLERGIC TO AVOCADOS 🙁
I KNO THEY ARE RICH AND HAVE GREAT HEALTHY OILS… CAN YOU SUGGEST AN ALTERNATIVE FOR ME FOR THE WRAP OR ANY RECIPE THAT CALLS FOR AVOCADOS??

    1. Donna – Hi! Nice to hear from you! That was one of my favorite events last year. How about using hummus instead?
