The Time I Almost Ate At Taco Bell… (I’ve Been Keeping A Tiny Little Secret!)

I am thrilled to announce we are expecting our own little Food Babe this winter.

I know all you moms and dads out there have been waiting for this moment for a long time… I laugh just thinking about all the times you said to me “Just wait, until you have kids”…

Well – that time is almost here and you can finally get all your “I told ya so’s” ready to fire!

No, but seriously, we are SO EXCITED. It’s been really hard to keep this secret from you! I’ve been walking around with a ridiculous smile on my face for months trying to hold it in.

I’m obsessed! Baby investigations are underway!

I’ve been reading every natural pregnancy and baby book under the sun for the past several months.

How it happened…

Well I am not going to go into all the exact details (I’ll let you use your imagination – haha)… but late last year, I knew I was finally ready to be a Mom. My parents weren’t getting any younger, Mr. Food Babe and I were about to celebrate 10 years of marriage and the more I thought about my role in this life, I knew I really wanted to bring another force for good into the world. I have so many hopes for her – to be brave, confident, powerful, smart and have lots of tenacity!

When I looked at my husband and said I was ready, things happened quick. BOOM. I was pregnant. I honestly couldn’t believe it – I thought it would take a long time considering all the pregnancy stories and experiences I have heard about with loved ones and close friends, but I am incredibly grateful that it happened so easily for us. We are truly blessed – I can’t help but think the years of getting my health to its optimal state had to help – practicing my healthy habits, regular acupuncture and staying away from processed food!

I’ve never been more hungry in my life!

Now that I am pregnant – wow – have my eating habits changed. First of all, not in a million years did I think I would ever crave Taco Bell again. But it happened. I was walking by one on the way to another restaurant and I could literally taste a chicken soft taco and bean burrito in my mouth. Of course I didn’t get any – But man! It was the weirdest sensation I have ever experienced, especially considering I haven’t eaten at Taco Bell since it was like 2am in the morning and I was in college.

And then Burger King happened. Yes. That nasty excuse for food. I was in Spain (of all places!) promoting the Spanish version of The Food Babe Way and was stuck in an airport terminal with the smell of charbroiled hamburgers radiating the whole waiting area. I thought I was going to DIE if I didn’t have one. But thankfully my years of personal investigation and study of food toxins and industrial factory farming kept me FAR FAR away – there was no way I was going to feed my growing baby that tainted meat on that processed to death sesame seed bun!

As you can see, my pregnancy cravings have been INTENSE! To tame them, I’ve spent a lot of time making organic comfort food at home – I’ve made just about all my childhood favorites – grilled cheese, biscuits, pancakes and more. (Have you seen all the cooking on Snapchat? Follow me at “thefoodbabe”).

I have heard most mamas stop enjoying green vegetables during this time – thankfully that is not the case for me, I still LOVE kale and all things green (with a slice of hot cheese pizza please – haha). Actually my Melt In Your Mouth Kale Salad has been on serious repeat lately and is the one dish that doesn’t give me the pregnancy burbs! I’ll be sharing some more of the comfort food recipes I’ve been making soon.

  1. Infinte congrats to you. Your life is changed forever. Wish you Enjoy every minute of your one of a kind journey with lots of love dear. ❤️❤️

  2. Congratulations Food Babe~ Perfect timing as I am ready to have a baby in the recent future. I am looking forward to learning vicariously through you. Lots of Love 🙂

  3. Congratulations!! How exciting for you, your husband, and your family!! Best of luck with the rest of your pregnancy! My question is could you share what you used for birth control prior to getting pregnant? I don’t use hormonal contraceptives and was interested to see if you knew of a good alternative option. On a side note, is that a quilt you are standing in front of? It’s beautiful!

      1. yes, would LOVE to know the answer to this one. i get pregnant if we wash our underwear together (joke!) so could def use guidance in this dept.

  4. Congratulations!! So happy for you.. Love you and thank you for everything you do

  5. The importance of the diet of the soon to be fathers for healthy sperm which equals healthy baby

  6. congratulations! I have faith that you will research the package inserts and ingredients in the vaccinations that are pumped into children.

  7. Congratulations! You look wonderful, too. So funny–I craved Taco Bell when I was pregnant with my son! LOL

  8. My babies are now 18 and 14 and I can tell you that they are the best thing that I have ever done! Hands down! I have done a lot, too and have enjoyed terrific careers (still appear weekly on local lifestyle morning show) but nothing comes close to comparing to the joy, excitement, roller coaster ride of becoming a Mama. You are about to fall madly in love in a few months. Congrats!!

And I have no doubt that you are planning to breastfeed. Painful at first but at about the one month mark, maybe sooner, you will find it to be the most incredible experience! Endorphins are released to the Mom, you lose the weight faster and the bond with the baby is really something special!

  9. Congrats Food Babe! This is the best news ever- I am 11 weeks pregnant and just like you have been battling the cravings !! Do you have any recommendations for prenatal vitamins?

  10. Congratulations!! Children are the greatest blessing you could ever receive, we have 7 blessings. I’m so happy for you and your family!

  11. Congrats Food Babe on the wonderful news!! I love following you to stay on top of all the healthy choices for my family.

  12. CONGRATS! I didn’t see “Well Adjusted Babies” in your stack of books! Its my baby Bible – not just because I’m a chiropractor but because my now 9 month old is the happiest healthiest kid of the whole extended family! I attribute this to my staunchly chemical free pregnancy and holistic parenting style. Its a book I go back to again and again! Enjoy this time – it FLIES by 🙂

  13. Congratulations!! I’m very happy for you! What an awesome blessing. You are going to make an awesome Mommy for Little Princess Food Babe!

  14. Congratulations, Vani!! May you and your husband be filled with wisdom and patience as you raise your little bundle of joy!

  15. Congrats! We just had our little one 8 weeks ago. What’s your take on the Vaccines? They already gave is the vitamin K shot and a hep b vaccine but we are approaching the 2 month mark which is a lot of potential shots. Also we are traveling to Thailand soon so any info on that would help too.

    1. Go to the NVIC website for independent info, and check all of DR Susanne Humphries videos and book. They are on YOUTUBE. I have 2 healthy teens with no vaccines, and they never suffered from chronic ear infections. In fact they are 12 and 14 and never had a course of antibiotics ever!

  16. Congratulations Vani. A little bundle of joy for you and your hubby to cuddle and love.

  17. Congratulations Vani!!!!
Little Food Babe is going to have fantastic parents…
    Blessings!

  18. Wow so happy for you & Mr. Food Babe! Welcome to the joys of becoming parents! You will develop a greater love like no other when your baby girl arrives! (Since you said her, I’m assuming you are having a girl)
The bond that develops between you & your baby is truly incredible! You & your hubby are truly blessed!

  19. Congratulations! So happy for you both. Praying for a healthy pregnancy, delivery and baby!

  20. That is so awesome! I am really looking forward to your pregnancy investigations and findings. I have often wondered about prenatal vitamins – any recommendations?

  21. Vani,
A Super, Enormous, Gigantic and Huge Congratulations to you and Mr. Hari on your decision to bring another Light Bearer and Blessing to our earth. I Thank You for that. Oh now I am getting choked up, because I know that you are participating in thee biggest act of selflessness, kindness and Love. : ) Now I need to go get a tissue for real.
Much Light and love to all three of you.

  22. I can not believe how many blessings you have given all of us and not it is your turn.
I am so excited for you and know you will embrace motherhood with all the conviction you have to educate us .
Many many blessings to you and our future lessons for all kids come with lessons for us to learn as well as the ones they will learn.

  23. Congratulatiins, Vani!!!❤ I’m sure she will be so beautiful and a little food babe 😉

My hubby and I are expecting number three this fall/winter too! We only had two when I entered your video contest for my eczema last year!

Enjoy your pregnancy! Are you having a homebirth?

    1. Alyanna – Congratulations!!! I am exploring all my options for birth right now 🙂

      1. That’s so awesome! I had a hospital birth for my first, a surprise homebirth (planned to go to the hospital with my doula but it didn’t work out!) with my second and we are planning a homebirth for our third.

If you do a hospital birth, so doulas truly are a wonderful resource and support system physically and emotionally during labor! Excited to hear how the rest of your pregnancy and journey into motherhood goes!❤

  24. You look radiant! Before I was sure that I was pregnant my favourite food was steamed zucchini blended with healthy mayo and salsa, topped with alfalfa sprouts on wheat bread. Strange how I craved that. Thank you for all that you do.

  25. Congratulations! Being pregnant (36 weeks) myself, and trying to force myself to eat well has been one of my hardest challenges. I love hearing your own struggles and your victory over it. All the pesticides go straight from your mouth straight into the placenta, my pediatrician told me, so stay the course as much as possible! The struggle is real when you are beyond hungry and beyond tired. All my love and support your way… it’s a trying time that people tell me is worth the reward at the end! Surround yourself with natural focused pregnant women and beware the hospital setting… some can be good, and others will try to fool you into a cookie cutter type experience. Being low risk and health conscious, you’ll quickly find that many out there will take advantage of you just like the food industries. It’s all about that money, apparently. Do your research (which I have no doubt you will).

    1. Congrats to you! You are almost there, how lucky 🙂 Thanks for all your good advice!

  26. Congratulations!!! A must-read is “The Thinking Woman’s Guide to a Better Birth” by Henci Goer

As a certified childbirth educator (ICCE) and doula (DONA), I of course must recommend childbirth and breastfeeding classes as well as a doula and midwife (or very non-intervention OB)!

  27. Big congrats to you! And I know you will have a healthy baby knowing how well you look after yourself and how much you care about literally everything.

  28. Awe Vani congratulations! Let the cravings begin and that’s just the beginning of a wonderful journey! I craved artichokes daily and took them to work with my pan to steam! I’m happy for you and Mr. Food Babe but especially for Grandma!

  29. Congratulations and may blessing to you!

    I’m 35, 8wks pregnant with my first!

I would love to hear from you about the myths of 35+ pregnancy
and for all of us who already eat healthy, whats the deal with the dr’s pushing Folic acid and prenatal vitamin (?)
    thank you in advance,
    Iris

    1. I am also curious about your opinion on pregnancy over 35. Being 35 myself I hear tons of negative things about it which is really scary and almost off putting.

  30. Congratulations!! My prediction – it’s a boy. When I was pregnant with my daughter all I wanted was sweets. I couldn’t tame my cravings for bad food. This time around (I’m due in January with a boy) all I want to eat is salads and fruit! Either it’s a boy or you have more willpower than I do!! Congrats again!

  31. Congratulations. One of the happiest times of my life. Enjoy and thanks for your hard work.

  32. Fantastic news!!!!! I’m Thrilled for you!! Being a mom is such a blessing! I was married 10yrs before our only child arrived. Many blessings to you and your hubby!

  33. Blessings, and congratulations!!!! A big question, will you vaccinate your baby?
Please do you own thorough research before you trust anyone with the health of your baby. And go see the movie VAxxed before you make any decisions!!!

  34. I have read that a large percentage of umbilical cord blood & breast milk tested positive for round up even for those who eat organic. Do you have a plan?

  35. Congrats to you and your hubby! Lucky you…you could have had the nausea/vomiting for the past 3 months like so many of us. Nothing sounds good. Glad you could resist the bad stuff…..now just wait til “you have kids”. Hopefully you will be lucky and get the little food babe eating on the right track….hope little person is not a fussy eater. My motto…”don’t give in” they will eat good food choices eventually”.

  36. Hi Vani!!
Congratulations I’m so happy for you! So I’m an avid reader of labels and I love your posts about food. Since you are now expecting how do you feel about vaccination I know it’s a very heated topic right now. Just wanted to get your thoughts and see if you have done any research and read vaccine ingredient labels.
    Thanks!

  37. I’m so happy for you. What are you going to name her or him?? Can’t wait to see a photo of the little one.

Eat healthy and keep working. Keep us posted.

    Marilyn
