The Hari Shake – A Poem

Hari Shakes are a staple of my life
My husband drinks them because Food Babe is his wife
But that’s not the only reason you see
He drinks them because they are so damn yummy!

Hari Shakes are nothing fancy, just a green delicious smoothie with a name
Acting like I invented a new drink, would make me sound so lame
I drink these gorgeous green beauties because I love getting my dark leafy greens
And because I know it will help me look like someone in their teens!

You blend it all together with lots of vitamin and fiber rich fruit
It’s easier to digest, preventing you from a poot.
You also get more nutrients, because blenders can breakdown the vegetable cell wall
Chewing all the time is for the cows, y’all!

Hari Shakes are a great choice for busy lifestyles and are perfect to make the night ahead
Knowing you have one ready in the fridge will make you sleep easier as you lay down in your bed.

If you haven’t had a green smoothie before try this recipe tonight
It will fill your body with lots of phytonutrient love giving your body instant light!

Commit to exercise, loving yourself, and drinking Hari Shakes as part of your daily routine
And you’ll experience what it is like to be a lean mean cancer preventing machine!

Total time

Ingredients
  • 4 cups kale removed from stem
  • 4 large stalks of celery chopped
  • 3 sprigs parsley
  • 3 sprigs cilantro
  • 1 pear chopped
  • 1 apple chopped or 1 cup strawberries or fruit of your choice
  • juice of ½ lemon
  • 8 ounces of filtered water
Instructions
  1. Wash all vegetables thoroughly and place into a large bowl
  2. Add 8 ounces of water and lemon juice into a blender with 2 cups kale
  3. Blend for 30 secs until just incorporated
  4. Add additional kale, herbs and celery and keep blending for another 30 secs
  5. Next add apple and pear and blend for another 30-60 secs until well combined (Do not over blend)
  6. Pour mixture into 2 glass storage jars
  7. Best served after chilled - especially for your first one!
Notes
Makes approximately two 20 ounce servings – Sip slowly and drink with intention immediately after or store up to two days. **Pears and Apples work great because they bind all the ingredients together and make a creamier consistency – but feel free to add a variety of fruits to your liking – but not more than 1 serving of fruit per smoothie** ***Please buy all organic ingredients if possible***

Using a large bowl for all the ingredients is super helpful:

My blender holds the exact amount  I need…38-40 ounces come out perfect with this recipe every time.

Since my husband also drinks one each day – I make 2 different batches to eat over the next 48 hours.

These green beauties make the perfect breakfast, a snack in the late afternoon, or even an appetizer to lunch or dinner! Use air tight glass containers like these from bodum to store your shakes.

Hope you enjoy the Hari Shakes and what they can do for your body, health & wellbeing!!

      1. Vani- I did and I love the ‘hari juice’, I do have one question. I have been reading a lot about chia seeds ( love ’em ) and I’ve been reading that they should be soaked for ten minutes and on the other hand I also read that its okay to just sprinkle. I just sprinkle them on my oatmeal just because I don’t like that gooey texture. What’s your advice? dry or soaked? are any health benefits lost if not soaked?
        thanks

      2. You are my girlfriend”s favorite healthy foods spokesperson……keep up the good work….on another note, what do you think of the Paleo diet? Aside from pasta, ezekiel bread and an occasional dish with rice….we’re pretty much on it.

    1. Yes – The taste may take some getting use to – You can certainly use less or leave it out! Knowing that the cilantro and parsley are cleansing the blood and detoxing the liver might help you like the taste more 🙂

      Good Luck in your journey!!!

  1. Hey there – where did you get those awesome bodum cups to store the juice in? Love your posts! 🙂

    1. Hey Jessica – You can get them at Sur La Table, The Container Store or directly from bodum at http://www.bodumusa.com – They really are so awesome – Easy to clean, keep everything air tight and there is no worry about any plastics leaching into your food!

  2. Made this tonight but used strawberries and blackberries with the apple and all your other ingredient…my 2 yr old loved it! He is a green drinking machine though! I’m amazed by him…some of my green veggie drinks have been a challenge for me and he will ask for more,

    1. That’s AMMMMMAZING Christine! Wow – I’ve been trying to get my nephew to drink homemade fruit smoothies and that’s a challenge!! – I can’t imagine something green. Hearing your story makes me want to try harder! Thank You! I’d love to hear other strategies on how you sneak in veggies!

      1. One thing I do is blend it longer, reason is that most kids don’t like something especially juices is due to the texture. I experimented with him today and found that if I diluted it with some more water and added a tad more fruit and blended really well he liked over the original method you described. You might want to try, plus bananas are a great way to ‘hide’ the green flavor if that is too much for him. I am amazed though sometimes by my son, he truly is an example for me that kids will eat healthy things if you just try. Even giving your nephew kale with fruit to start is better then nothing…he might like it:)

      2. A vitamix machine is awesome for blending but quite expensive. To me, its worth the smoother taste!

      3. You might want to have a look at the NutriBullet by MagicBullet. A lot cheap then the vitamix and seems so far to work quite well

  3. Can this be done in just a plain, everyday blender? I don’t own one of those special ones or a juicer.
    Thanks very much for info.

    1. Yes – this is a smoothie, so a normal everyday blender will work just fine. Hope you try it soon! I have one almost everyday!

  4. I’ve been looking for a good blender that is cost efficient to start making delicious green smoothies such as yours in, but there are so many options out there… Do you recommend a particular brand of blender? Thanks!

    1. If I were buying a new blender – I would either get a blendtec or vitamin. I have an old school waring pro blender with the glass jar and it works great… but I have been longing a vitamin for a while now 🙂

      1. Do you mean a Vitamix? That is the brand I’ve been looking at lately. I’ve heard great things about the company and the product. 🙂

      2. Haha – Yes a vitamix! I know, I love it! Just haven’t made the splurge yet, still recovering from the crazy juicer (norwalk) my husband bought for me last year.

      3. We use a vitamix and it works great. We are excited to try your green drink recipe. Thanks for posting it!

  5. This is the first green drink I have ever made or drank and all I can say is WOW! After the first try there was such an incredible difference in my energy I will never go back. Although I have been eating cleaner for awhile, nothing has ever made this much of a difference. I am now telling everyone I know to make this for themselves, thanks!

    1. Thanks for spreading the Hari Shake love Wendy… I’m so glad you like it. It’s definitely my favorite combo that I make constantly. If you like having it almost everyday like me, one tip I recommend is to rotate your greens a bit – from kale, to collards to chard and back and forth. Your body will thank you!

      1. Are the collards and chard bitter? This is why I have been nervous about trying green drinks, not sure of what I am going to taste. I will have to work up to that. I know I am on the right path though, I sleep better, wake up feeling like I actually slept, and I don’t drag in the afternoon. Thanks so much, your site is very inspiring!

      2. Try removing the stems from the kale or swiss chard, as it takes most of the bitter taste away and the major health benefits lie in the greener, leafy part as anyway, so you are not loosing nutritional benefits.

  6. How much do you think I need to give to the kids ( 9 and 2) and how much for adults? Also is it ok to drink this everyday before a meal? (Just once a day)

    1. Yes – It will be perfect to drink before a meal. The greens and fruit will really fill you up – so you’ll probably eat less of everything else…which is always a good thing! I’d serve about 6-8 ounces to your kids and then do 12-20 ounces for adults. My recipe makes 40 ounces… so you could probably feed your whole family with one recipe or make two patches and store some for the next day. Good Luck Tammy!

  7. Hi!! I’m making this tonight…I CAN NOT WAIT! I have a few questions – how long will this keep in the fridge (so that I don’t loose any nutrients)? I plan on drinking this myself…so my plan is to make it the night before, drink it for breakfast the next morning, and hopefully drink the 2nd one the following morning. Is the 2nd drink too long to keep in the fridge?

Can I use mason jars for storage for now?

Also, can I use spinach instead of kale to alternate with?

Love your site…and I’m loving your Travel Food post…thank you so very much for everything!

    Melissa – Houston

    1. Hi Melissa – I’m excited, that you are excited! They will keep in the fridge for 48 hours in a airtight container. Your timing is perfect, and yes you can use a mason jar and spinach. Good Luck!

      1. Vani, Can you comment on why it’s okay to store a smoothie overnight? I had always heard that the longer one waits to drink anything juiced, the greater the loss of nutrients due to oxidation

  8. What makes the Vitamix so special? I hear many people mention them. I know the price is; is there anyplace to get a good deal when buying them?
I keep hearing people talk about chia seeds and and everything coconut–water, milk, oil. Why are these so special? Coconut I think has a lot of saturated fat in it and I know the water has a lot of sugar in it. In my book, these would seem to be unhealthy.
    Thanks for any info.

    1. The Vitamix will make a truly smooth smoothie out of fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds. A good place to buy one is Bed, Bath, and Beyond. Don’t forget your 20 % off coupon!

      1. Hi! Just wanted to let you know you can buy a refurbished Vitamix at half the cost and it’s just as good as new. I did, and I love it. It still comes with a 5 year warranty.

      2. Amie- where did you buy the refurbished one? That is such a great tip! Thank you!

      3. Straight from Vitamix! I liked dealing with them. Also, they will give you a percentage off if you mention you saw the Vitamix from a blog, like this one, only Food Babe doesn’t use it, I thoght she did. The woman actually got on the computer and went to her site and looked under the products she recomends. But, it was un a picture un in one if her posts so I did get the deal. Good luck.

  9. Hi!! Great shakes, my husband and I love them! We have a Vitamix, it does the job well. I usually add a little more water for the consistency. I do have a BIG question. Would you happen to have the nutrient breakdown for this shake as you have it? Calories, Vitamin A, C, potassium, fiber, and anything else? My mom is going through cancer right now and has to actually be careful of what she puts into her body — I want to give her these shakes on a daily basis — so I was wondering if you happened to have the breakdown. I have tried but it doesn’t seem right?!

    1. A close friend just finished chemo for breast cancer……due to chemo destroying a large percentage of gut bacteria, good & bad, anything with high fiber absolutely make her have horrible diarrhea and painful gas. Chemo Dr. recommended low to no fiber for duration of chemo treatments. My friend found this to be true….she tried all the good greens, whole grain bread, lots of vegies & fruit during first round of treatment and was gut sick on top of chemo sick. Granted this was her experience. Do investigate diet recommendations for chemo & radiation treatment. Blessings to your Mom on this journey.

  10. Also, my 3 and 2 year old beg me for this. They’re great eaters and love to try new things because its how we eat in my house. Not a lot of junk food choices and they see a lot of green…..

  11. I made this this morning, but it was a bit watery. Any suggestions? Did I do anything wrong?

      1. No. Polyunsaturated oils and sugars/refied carbs are bad for cholesterol problems. Coconut oil, olive oil, and grass-fed butter is good for us.

  12. I’d love to try this – but am not a huge parsley fan so I may have to work my way up! I’m wondering why you take the kale off of the stem. Is the stem hard to digest? I always stick it into my smoothies (same with chard) since it seems to blend in just fine as long as I let the Kitchenaid mixer go long enough. I figure it adds some good fiber! I’m so excited about green smoothies. I find that I can throw more and more greens or cucumber in, and it (almost) never seems like too much! I’d never thought of celery, though. Great stuff.

  13. A friend of mine posted something from your site not too long ago, and ever since I have been hooked! I have always had a strong desire to eat organically but financially I just felt like maybe it was not something we could do. However, I am on a roll here with devouring information and I am not sure I can ever go back to not eating organically. For the past week I have had your Hari shake and I enjoy it so much! Health force Vitamineral green is on it’s way and I am excited for it! Our pantry and toiletries are slowly but surely switching over and I hope that my kids and my husband can make the switch too 🙂 Thanks for your passion for this and all the info!

  14. Just found your site–love it! I’m a complete newbie to juicing/eating real food, etc and am inching my way into your full-blown Hari Shake. I added more water and juiced an extra apple to add to it to make it sweeter. I’m sure I just blew any nutritional value it had, but the parsley gets me every time! I’ll keep it up, though. Just made another batch with a little less of the extra juice and will be taking it with me tomorrow to an all day volleyball tourney (watching my daughter). I figure that will be better to have than a soda! Here’s to me getting better at healthy eating!

  15. Are the Bodum cups 8oz for $16/ea? They are labelled storage jars, just trying to find the ones pictured. Thanks!

  16. Can the celery be replaced with a different ingredient? I just can’t stand the taste but love the rest of the shake. Thanks!! <3

  17. Just finding this recipe through 100 Days of Real Food. Question: Is it 8oz of water and 8oz of lemon juice? If it is a combination, can you post an idea of the ratio?

  18. Hi Vani,

I’ve been reading your blog for a while, but have never tried one of your recipes. I love smoothies, so I decided to give your Hari shake a try. To be honest, I was very skeptical. I had never had a green smoothie before. I was very nervous taking the first sip, but it was great. It tasted so FRESH. I did add some ice cubes to chill it. I went a little easy on the cilantro and parsely, and also only used a pear for the fruit. I was out of apples. I drank it right up! I love knowing that I just gave my body all of those great nutrients from vegetables. I can’t remember the last time I have had Kale. My body might go into shock 😉

  19. Hey foodbabe!

I have a question, I want to juice but I wake up REALLY early for work as it is and during my research about juicing the night before I read that you won’t benefit if you juice the night before. Is this true?

    Thanks!!!

    1. Freshly squeezed juice should be consumed immediately for the most nutrients but a shake or smoothie like this one can be stored in fridge in airtight container for up to 48 hours. So the hari shake would be perfect to make ahead.

  20. Love this, but I can’t drink fast enough to beat my cilantro and parsley going bad! Has anyone tried making batches and freezing it? I wonder if it would degrade any of the great nutritional properties?

  21. I have a question regarding the fruit. You stated not to use more than 1 serving. Is that just because it’s the best ratio for the drink or are you saying that for certain nutritional reasons?

  22. A lot of nutritional blogs I read say that these smoothies lose their nutritional value shortly after being juiced/blended. I’m curious why you recommend storing them for up to 48hrs? Won’t this deplete their nutritional values? I hope you respond…I’ve sent some other questions and never seem to get a response.

    1. Hi Kristen – sorry if you haven’t received answers to all your questions… For juices – it is extremely important to drink them right away, but for shakes, as long as they are in an airtight container – you can make them in advance. A lot of people have lamented to me that they don’t have time in the morning to cut and blend vegetables – this is why I recommend doing it the night before. Also – for this particularly shake – many people like it colder than when it is first blended. Good Luck!

      1. Maybe cut the veggies the night before and then blend in the morning? I use the Nutribullet, so it is easy to load the container and just blend in the morning and go. No need to pour into something else.

  23. You have probably posted this somewhere, but could you post here the nutritional breakdown for the Hari Shake (and why is it called that anyway?). I think I might need the amazing nutritional info to encourage my family to drink it. Ha. Thanks!

  24. I made this for the first time tonight – it was really good, and my husband agreed!

I will definitely make this part of our routine.

    Thanks!

  25. someone asked your opinion of the Paleo diet, we would love to hear your thoughts, maybe in another post???? so much anti-grain sentiment out there!!!
    thanks!
    ler in nyc

  26. I’d like to try this shake, but I have a protein deficiency. Have you ever tried adding either a protein powder or a food source of protein to the shake?

  27. Have you ever tried Greenberry Shakeology? (http://myhomefitnesspro.com/shakeology/) Seriously, it has the what you’re putting in, plus a ton of other vitamins and proteins. Im not sure what it cost you per day to make, but shakeology is about $4 a day, and you can even use it as meal replacement. Just wondering your thoughts on it?

  28. Hey Food Babe,

What kind of blender do you use in that post. I like the sleek shape –

    1. Wow Vani, I’m surprised you have a high end blender. I used my Black and Decker for years before buying the Blend-tec, the difference is quite amazing! I have a Blendtec and a I have a Nutri-Bullet for travel, Both are nutrition extractors because they break the cell wall extracting all of the available nutrition from the greens and fruit. I also use the Vta-mix as well in my Smoothie classes, all three are excellent machines that nourish! I think you will love the Nutri-bullet for travel, too! Love what you do! 🙂 ~ Regina (Green Smoothies Mom) <3

  29. Hi Vani,

I am fairly new to juicing, and I was just wondering, there is so much ‘leftover’ fruit and veg in the juicer cup that it kills me to throw it out, does the leftover stuff still have nutritional value? I was thinking of freezing it and making a smoothie out of it when I get home in the afternoon ( I juice in the mornings ) What is your opinion?
    Thanks!
PS if anyone else has an opinion that would help too 🙂

  30. I guess I don’t understand the difference between “juice” and a “shake” when it comes to storage. I was under the impression that the quality of the drink starts to deteriorate once juiced or blended. Is it because of “how” it is stored in the refrigerator?? Mine always separate while in fridge, so do recommend re-blending or just shaking? Thanks for all the great recipes..Janie P.S. I love my Vitamix…i also use it to grind grains and seeds.

    1. Hi Janie – fresh squeezed juice need to be consumed right away because it does lose nutrients but smoothies are fine to store for 48 hours in fridge in an airtight container.

  31. Just bought everything (mostly) to start tomorrow. I’ve been following all the other habits, but have been lagging here! I have limited organic produce available close by and was unable to get the herbs today, but got everything else. I shall start tomorrow for breakfast! Thank you so much for all your info! You have changed my life. (And hopefully a few of my FB friends, lol. As I’m always reposting your info!) Thanks again

  32. Dear Food Babe- is it true that if you are making a juice and not drinking it right at the moment it’s out of the juicer, you are actually loosing most of the vitamins?

Thank you so much for keeping me more and more educated about the food out there!

    1. Hi! Yes, for fresh juices, it is important to drink as soon as possible because they do quickly begin to lose nutrients. For a shake or smoothie, it is ok to store in fridge in airtight container up to 48 hours.

      1. Thank you, Krista.
One more question- what is the differnce between making smoothie or Juice?
For instance, I made a juice(?) today out of beet, celeri, carrots, kale and apple- so how should I call it :-)?

      2. This recipe is a shake (or smoothie) It is made in a blender and uses all of the fruit and vegetables including the fiber and pulp. A juice is made in a juicer (not a blender) and just extracts the juice and leaves the pulp behind. They are both beneficial.

  33. Should I have to eat it with a spoon, or did I not blend it long enough? I’m eating it now with my four-year-old, and we keep laughing at the faces we are both making. I feel like I’m eating grass. We used a pear and a cup of strawberries. Maybe I should add a banana to make it a smoother consistency? Pease help! We really want to like it!

      1. Hi Nicole – you are too cute. It is completely a personal preference. You can add more fruit if you need it a little sweeter – a banana would be great. If you want it thinner and smoother, add a little more water and blend a little longer. Just mess around with it and it can turn out a little differently each day because of size, sweetness etc of fruits and veggies. Good luck! Don’t give up – this is an amazing habit for you to start with your 4 yr. old.

  34. Just wondering about the celery… I thought celery really has very little nutritional value. Does it add something really special to the drink? Just wondering, as I normally don’t use it for anything else. I’ll be making this shake tomorrow. 😉 Thank you!

  35. Hi Vani,
I tried the Hari shake this AM for the first time in my juicer and it was delicious! 🙂 Loving the food plan!

I cut the recipe in 1/2 and it was perfect for me..
    Quick question:
I found that the 2 cups of kale hardly produced any juice. Is that normal?
Is it better to blend instead of juice.. I just felt like the kale went in and out the machine without much happening.

Thanks for your input when you get a chance! 🙂

    1. Elizabeth – Yes – 2 cups of kale doesn’t produce much juice, so you could use more (including stems) if you choose the juicing route. In next month’s eating guide – we’ve broken up the measurements and provided 2 new juice/smoothie recipes that will work fantastic. Also – we are featuring some snack ideas and meals you can eat out of you are traveling or can’t take your food with you. It’s going to be awesome.

  36. HI. first i have to say your website/ FB page is just amazing. I am so fed up being fed junk food by big companies…I m trying hard to change my eating habit but it s a real challenge. It is not an easy task to “rewire” the brain to not be sucked in to junk food… so for this smoothie. is it possible to blanch the kale to take some of the bitterness out? or will this kill their nutritional value. I did try a while ago a detox smoothie with Kale and it was gross because kale was dominating everything. So right now the way i enjoy kale is in the form of homemade kale chips (thanks to 100 days of real food FB page) but i would love to eat kale and appreciate kale in its pure form. Thanks 🙂

    1. so i just made my 1st batch. couple observation. i have one of those ninja food processor…it will puree everything but not to the point it s smooth at all it s very chewy still but taste good. 2nd there is no way at least with my Ninja that this recipe work with just 8 oz of water. i ended up puting at least 16 oz of water then an 11 oz of organic coconut water with pineapple for more hydration and sweetnest since my pear was not ripe enough. first taste i think it mostly taste cilantro and parsley but it s a good thing because i dont particularly like the taste of kale so i get the benefit of it without the taste. overall a great recipe. wish it was smoother but maybe i can adjust it next time. Thanks for this recipe 🙂

      1. Hi Frederic – so glad you made it and liked it!

      2. i do need to make some adjustment so the herbs are not the predominant taste but overall it s great. also it might be better in a juicer to have a smoother texture but i love the idea of this recipe 🙂

  37. Hello!
I had my first Hari Shake today! I was very surprised at the taste and happy that I enjoyed the shake! I am trying to increase my iron level through food and the iron in Kale is a big reason I decided to add this shake to my mornings.

I do have a question or two: Why parsley and cilantro? Just curious of their benefits. Can I have a break down of what this shake does for your bod,y specifically? I know it improves energy and completion, but what else does the juice offer our bodies.

    Thanks so much!

  38. I make mine with Kale, arugula, orange, parsley, lime, coconut water, ginger, a touch of honey and wheatgrass powder.

  39. Hey, great blender! Everyone always raves about the vitamix, but hey, it’s PLASTIC! What kind of blender is that, and do you know of a food processor that doesn’t have a plastic bowl?

  40. I just came to know about your site 6 days ago and the next day I went to whole foods brought all organic fruits and vegetables . Since then we have been drinking Hari shake every day. Thanks a lot for sharing the recipe and making a healthy change in our lives.

  41. Thanks for sharing this recipe. I just tried it & will be making this to take to work for lunch. I usually don’t have time for lunch so I skip them, but I can make time to drink a shake. Thanks again Foodbabe.

  42. I’ve tried an organic kale smoothie in the past and had horrible gas!!! Is there a way to pass on the gas?

  43. I tried this today and am having a hard time getting it down. I am not a fan of “chunky” smoothies. I even tried adding more water. I want to get to the point where I will like these kinds of drinks but I think this was a bit much for my first time. :o)
Any ideas to help work up to this??

    Thank you!

    1. And I certainly will not waste this. I plan to pour it into ice trays and incorporate it into other smoothies!
