  1. I have begun making green smoothies and find I am using almond and coconut milk alot. I have read that even the organic brands have added vitamins added that are synthetic. I would like to try and make my own, do you have a source for organic almonds in bulk? and a good recipe? thanks

    • Hi Lynn, I just started making my own hemp milk. it’s simple and delicious. I’ve not yet made nut milk, but thought I would share this in case you wanted to try it. 3 to 1 h20 to hemp seeds. So, 1 cup of hemp seeds, 3 cups of water, a teaspoon or two (depending on what you like) of raw honey, blend, serve. Creamy and delish! Enjoy!

  2. Shannon – most commercial ketchups contain high fructose corn syrup and “natural flavorings” which could be anything – so you may want to avoid these. Here’s an easy recipe I’ve had good luck with:

    Homemade Ketchup
In large pan, combine 1 medium onion (chopped) and 2 tablespoons of olive oil and cook until soft. Transfer the cooked onions to a saucepan, and mix in one 28-ounce can of crushed tomatoes (preferably organic), 1/4 cup agave nectar, 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar and one teaspoon of sea salt. Simmer over low heat for 1.5 to 2 hours, or until mixture thickens into ketchup consistency. Allow mixture to cool, and then pour into a high-powered blender and mix until smooth. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to four weeks.

    Good luck!

  3. Thank you! I am a homemaker, mother of four uber jocks, wife of a super athlete. I am providing something like 32,500 calories per day to this family, in certain proportions, to help them reach their personal goals and dreams. Big dreams- like college dance and college football. Over the years I have made any changes needed in our diets, all around the world- but what a wake up call your website is! This and 100 days of real food have been my reading of late, and my inspiration. I took your pantry list to the grocery store tonight, your philosphies in my heart, your info in my brain. Well- food labels are shocking!! Here is what amazed me the most; I shop at the United States Air Force Military Academy Commissary! One would think that this would be the epitome of healthy shopping, since the supreme fighting force in the world eats from its shelves. Nope- I will have to do the best I can, and I will have to consider additional local grocery stores too. Thank you for opening my eyes! Nicole

  4. Hi Lisa!
Thanks for all of the info. I have a question about chocolate hazelnut spread – what kind do you recommend, or do you make your own?
    Thanks!

  5. Have you ever done a post specifically about tea? I tried to search but didn’t find one post dedicated to it. I’m strictly a water drinker (other than healthy smoothies), but I know certain kinds of tea have benefits. I’ve been off caffeine for about 5 years now, so that is a bit limiting. I’m a little leery of decaf versions of drinks, but I’m not sure of any teas that are naturally caffeine free. Do you have any advice for me? I trust your opinions, so I’d love some insight or direction toward another trusted source!

  6. a few questions:
how much do you spend on groceries per week or month
can you do a post about salt. Why do you use himalayan salt over others?
    Thanks!!!

  7. Was wondering what type of broth (either vegetable or meat) you can find that does not have “natural flavors”? Do you always make your own broth? Are there options for ready made broth that don’t have hidden MSG or other nasty ingredients? Thanks again for all the awesome info, it has really changed my perspective. Our family is eating much healthier these days!

    • Hi Michelle – Vani has lots of sweet snacks that she loves. Check out the list above – in the right side column. Thanks!

  8. Does you have specific brands of Stevia (powdered and liquid) that you have researched and tend to keep in the pantry? Gee, I sure do appreciate you, Vani! You make a difference in MY choices.

  9. Hi Vani,
I would love to know what you thought of the ingredients in Cliff Bar Kids Z Bars? My 4 year old son loves these bars (especially the brownie ones), and although they appear to have pretty good ingredients in them I still worry about him eating them regularly in case there is a hidden unhealthy ingredient. If you have time to check out the ingredients for these bars I would love to know your opinion! Love your blog and applaude you for your recent petition to Kraft!

    Thanks so much,
    Tiffany

  10. Hi Vani,
I know you have sprouted grain bread on your list, which is something I definitely want to try but I was wondering how often you eat bread. I don’t really eat too much of it because all the bread I find at my local grocery store has tons of ingredients in it.
    Thank you!
