Launching Subway Petition – They Will Finally Hear From Us, Loud and Clear

Join Me In Signing The Petition: Subway Stop Using Dangerous Chemicals In Your Bread!

StopUsingAzodicarbonamide

I have written about Subway several times – First in 2012, when I did an investigation into what exactly was in their famous low calorie and “fresh” sandwiches and then again last year when I did a deep dive into one of the most controversial ingredients used in their breads.

Not only has this company not responded, but they have ignored repeated requests by me and others to learn more about why they are using an ingredient banned all over the world. They have completely ignored us.

Then last week, Michelle Obama, The First Lady of The United States endorsed this company saying every single item on the kid’s menu met the “highest nutrition standards.

This is what broke the camels back.

Not only is the First Lady of the United States duped by this company, but millions of North Americans.

I knew I had to do something. With you.

This action is bigger than just one ingredient.  It’s about holding companies accountable for their hypocrisy and exploitation of Americans. It’s about waking up the world and telling them the truth.

Join me today – Read this petition, sign it & watch the short video and then share it with everyone you know.

We have power together to change the food system.

We’ve done it a few times now, and we are going to do it again.

Onward! Food Babe Army!

Thank You For Making Your Voice Heard,

Vani Hari

  1. Subway also uses an industrial solvent in their bread. Companies have been using it for years to clean tractor parts and to muck out hog farms. In it’s gaseous state, this dangerous solvent can cause human skin to blister from only a few seconds of exposure.
As a liquid, this solvent is responsible for asphyxiation of thousands of children and adults. Specialists working around oil drilling platforms have to wear specially designed protective suits when working in environments rich in this solvent. I’ve read it’s even a primary ingredient in fracking!

Even in it’s solid state, this industrial chemical can, and frequently kills. Prolonged exposure can cause the skin to blacken and peal off. Many exposed for too long to this horrid chemical have lost limbs, fingers and toes.

And Subway, and Vani, the Food Babe frequently put this industrial chemical and solvent, dihydrogen monoxide in your food!

I wouldn’t be surprised if this chemical is used in floor mats or in making shoes.

You may be familiar with it’s more common designation, H20 or water.

    1. Don’t even get me started on Linoleic Acid. They use that stuff to make paint varnish! But that evil “mother” nature puts it in apples. We should start a petition to get it out of our fruits! Mother Nature has ignored our calls thus far, but with Vani’s help, I’m sure we can make a big enough media hype to force her into submission.

      1. I guess pictures with celebrities is reason enough to believe her. She’s a marketing consultant? WTF?

  2. kingsooper’s french bread has azodicarbonamide in it as well, i have just noticed. I threw the bread away.
    Thanks Vani, you’re a champ.

  3. The big kicker is that Subway does not put this ingredient in their bread in Europe, Australia, etc. Why here and not there?

  4. Thank you SO much Vani! I LOVE your site and all your work. You are helping people to be more AWARE of what they are putting in their bodies. It is so sad that many U.S. Food companies just don’t care about Americans. They care about their wallets. You should be so proud of yourself.

  5. AWESOME! !!!!!! although it was a mere 30 seconds Fox News mention the rubber bread be Subway. They mentioned stopping , but me & mine, we’re not eating Subway anymore due to they’re diseption. …..THANKS FOODBABE.COM
    THANKS ALEX INFOWARS.COM

      1. I dont get you nnegative people , if you’re no fan of Alex or infowars.com why would you waste your time writing me something like that, As I watched Alex on infowars.com The Foodbabe had thanked Alex , infowars.com and all his listeners for there support and the incredible speed in which we joined together and signed . Id think youd be thankful as well. but then again here I am wasting my time on you.

  6. While I do find this very interesting, and its great their removing it, its not toxic to humans.. There is evidence of “sensitization by inhalation” but were aren’t inhaling this…
Lets do some research shall we?
Azodicarbonamide is commonly used in bread doughs as it reacts with moist flour as an oxidizing agent. Azodicarbonamide produces a main product called Biurea, which, upon exposure, is rapidly eliminated from the body through excretion. The second product from this is called semicarbazide, which has amazing anti-infective/anti-viral properties by binding to copper or iron in your cells.

Now the last product, which is the iffy one, is called Ethyl carbamate. This was used for quite some time in medicine from the 1940’s thru to the 1970’s, it DID cause cancer in RATS when exposed to 1.5grams/kg, no study was done on humans so we can only assume it causes the same problems. However, I do not believe you will ever attain 1.5grams/kg of this ingredient even from eating Subway for every meal everyday. You know why? Because this is only found in bread at leves of 2 PARTS PER BILLION! Comparing this to alcoholic products, you can find an average of 15 – 22 Parts per million in your average beer/wine/brandy/whiskey, and other distilled drinks.

Just wanted to get this out there, I know this is used to make plastics but the reaction in the production of the plastic happens at 200 C degrees, bread DOES NOT cook at that high of a temperature.

    1. Really, you are defending a poison chemical in our food!?!?!?
Ok ok, secret subway owner, go eat your own poison ass$&le
Every fast food companies motto “give us all your money, then F&$k off and die”
Damn you cant trust food anywhere not even cooked at home……
      Human beings suck ass

      1. Yea I have eating at Subway here and there but will no longer will i nor my family and after watching you on Alex Jones i am going to watch all consumption.
        Thanks Food Babe

      2. The very basic principle of toxicology is that ANYTHING CAN BE TOXIC.
It is NOT the chemical that is toxic. It is the DOSE in which you take it.

Azodicarbamide is not toxic at the doses used in bread. The allowable limit is 45 ppm, which is 45 milligrams per kilogram of bread. The amount required to kill a person is approximately 64 grams for every kilogram you weigh. The average adult is 70kg, so you would need to eat 1 pound of this to kill the average adult. That is hardly toxic. Eating a pound of salt will kill you faster.

There are many similar instances of a chemical perceived as being toxic, which are found in foods. Yet, people do not live in fear of this. Apple seeds contain cyanide. Yes, cyanide is highly toxic. But nobody cares if you swallow one by accident. That is because the DOSE is insufficient to cause harm. You need to ingest pounds of apple seeds, which also need to be physically ground up, to die from it.

Water can also be toxic. There was a lady who died from drinking too much water on a radio contest, called “Hold Your Wee For a Wii”. Google it. 7 years ago now. She drank so much water she died. Are we afraid of water now?

Don’t be so hasty to believe the crap someone else says. Especially one who admits to having no education on what they speak of.

      1. Hey Smith and user ,
Get used to the government and corporate companies keeping secrets from you . Also, beaware of dihydrogen monoxide. Apparently, in large quantities it causes side effects . Too bad its found in cooking spray, natural juices and carbonate drinks .

This petition was probably for food babe to get awareness in the world

  7. STFU! Just let me enjoy my food. If you don’t like what they put in your food you eat, here is an idea STOP F N EATING IT. Please…. ohhh and nobody thinks your job is interesting. Get a real job!

    1. That’s the point. It’s not food. What you’re eating is not food. She’s trying to make it actual food again. You should thank her instead of so eloquently stating to STFU.

      1. Marie, Exactly! at least Food Babe is not a sheeple getting a real job doing what everyone else does and told to do like robots. She went against the grain to find this Info and bring it to the public’s attention. We need more people like Food Babe!!! Preservatives, chemicals all have an accumulative effect on the body. The more you eat, the more builds up in the body & overloads the liver, cells & other organs. People who do not care can pay the consequences later.

      2. You’re right. Foodbabe is not a sheeple. She is the sheeple herder on the train of ignorance.

Anyone with the most basic knowledge on health or toxicology such as a nurse, doctor or pharmacist can very precisely pinpoint every single mistake she is making with her assumptions. Foodbabe tries to link A to Z by jumping to conclusions, without any real evidence. A google search of a chemical’s MSDS is not research or enlightening in anyway.

    2. If you enjoy being fed junk insteead of food, then keep telling yourrself it’s food simply because they told you so.
The rest of us don’t appreciate our neighbors’ stupidity being exploited by amoral, profit-driven corporations that would rather spend millions convincing you junk is edible, than to provide edible products.

    3. FU2 Joe Joe. Eat nothing but processed / fast food seasoned with MSG and wash it down with massive amounts of fluoride after you get all the vaccines, while watching all of that wonderful T.V. programming to brainwash what’s left of your dumb down zombie lizard brain. The rest of us who are aware, think, & feel, don’t care what zombie gray goo for brains like yourself believe. Later Twit!!!

  8. Good job.

Now can we petition EVERY fast-food company in the world and many food processors to stop adding polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to cheese?

    1. Are you saying that potassium bromide “has been banned for years” from just Subway’s flour?
It has certainly not been banned from the US food supply — it is readily available and is used, for just one example, in a broadly used unbleached flour: Con Agra’s Occident (wheat flour, malted barley flour, niacin, reduced iron, potassium bromate, thiamine mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid).

  9. LOVE THIS! I sent the petition to EVERYONE I KNOW! Congrats on the big win!
    Heard you on InfoWars!

  10. This is definitely a case of someone who has way too much time on their hands pandering to the brain dead panic crowd. Guess what – EVERYTHING has chemicals in it. EVERYTHING can kill you if you ingest enough – even pure water. That apple seed you accidentally ate? Arsenic – and yet you still live to whine again? Most beans contain phytohaemagglutinin, you’ll have stuff shooting out both ends from that! Petition, petition, ban the bean!!! Cassava? Cyanide. All naturally occurring, all deadly at high doses, all harmless in small doses – just like azodicarbonamide.

Thanks to some of these chemicals, food stays edible longer so millions of people don’t starve to death or eat dangerously spoiled food. Don’t like it? Grow and prepare your own food rather than whining to restaurants who provide what the majority of people want.

    1. CJoseph, you’re statement should read: Thanks to some of these chemicals, food stays edible longer so millions of dollars are saved by these companies because food is not thrown out sooner, all while many people starve to death in other parts of the world.

      1. Care to provide us with some studies and you know, scientific fact that actually supports that statement?

      2. Actually, Foodbabe is mistaken.

Azodicarbonamide is NOT a carcinogen. A chemical classified as a carcinogen will have something called a “cancer slope factor”. Search for this term with arsenic or benzo-a-pyrene and you will find the cancer slope factor for these chemicals.

There is no such CSF for azodicarbonamide. Misinformation that the public takes at face value AGAIN.

Note that I am not against food advocates. I too want the public to eat healthy and live a long life. But as a toxicologist myself who has worked as a university professor and in cancer research, I can distinguish the truth and the fakes. Her food movement falls under the same fad-trends such as organic foods, natural health pills, gluten-free (most people eating gluten free no not actually have Celiac Disease, which is genetic and incurable)…etc. All of it is simply to further the salesman’s financial status.

Foodbabe is using the publicity gathered from CNN to further herself financially. She has a shop selling all sorts of basic junk that nobody would normally buy online, unless it was in support of her. Her message makes no sense to people educated in health sciences.

  11. Kristen R stated “Maybe the next step we can do is to get rid of their “Olive oil blend” dressing. Its 90% CANOLA OIL and 10% olive oil. Eat Fresh hmmm…”
Please tell me your being sarcastic. If you’re serious about your comment, guess what? Just because YOU don’t like something or think its healthy, doesn’t mean you should get “rid” off it. I hate this website.

  12. Why focus on just Subway? All fast food bread and most store bought bread has this chemical in it!

  13. In response to some of the above (negative) comments: If this chemical is considered safe, why would Subway agree to finally remove it?
    CONGRATULATIONS, Vani!

    1. Because in the world today fact has no bearing on some people’s reality. People like you will never believe them if they provide you the fact that it is harmless. You will call them lairs no matter what they say because you, with your degrees in food safety, medicine, and chemistry know way more than they do.

Has anyone stopped to ask why they put this chemical in their bread? Next you will be asking why they put fluoride in water or iodine in salt.

      1. Fluoride was taken OUT OF THE WATER supply in almost all of Europe, Japan, and South Korea. Fluoride is very toxic. Google “Fluoride Action Network.” Sweden was the first country to put fluoride in its water and it took fluoride out of its water in the 1970s!

    2. It is an obvious Public Relations move to satisfy the hordes of people who know nothing about food health . The general public has decided to believe everything Foodbabe has said as if she were a world expert on the subject. Yet she has no education on food sciences and cannot even pronounce the most basic of chemical names.

McDonald’s made a similar move years ago. Their frying oil (for fries) contained beef tallow. Then all the vegetarians and vegans complained that McDonalds tricked them into eating beef. So ironic, that a HAMBURGER joint is accused of tricking people eating beef.

Consequently, McD’s removed beef tallow from their fry oil. Strictly a PR move, and nothing to do with a health issue.

      1. But…but…what about what the World Health Organization says???? (see above quoted article via abcnews.com please)

      2. ABCnews reporters interpreting a message by the World Health Organization is NOT the same as the report issues by the WHO. Reporters are known for their poor understanding of the technical details, resulting in the reporting of the wrong message.

        http://www.who.int/ipcs/publications/cicad/en/cicad16.pdf

Let me spell it out for you.
Executive summary – NOT carcinogenic. NOT tumorigenic. NO developmental effects.

Section 9 – All of the cited human health effects are due to exposures to people working in a plastic factory. These people were INHALING high levels of azodicarbonamide in an enclosed space. There is zero incidence of people ingesting the chemical and having health effects. This is the same as a person working in a sawmill and being exposed to fine sawdust.

        Section 11 – Dose response.
No adverse effects to mice that were fed 1.25 grams per kg of body weight. For a human weighing 70kg, this means they can eat 1/2 POUNDS of it, and show NO EFFECTS. Did you know eating half a pound of salt will kill most adults?

The allowable limit of this chemical in food is 45 mg/kg bread. You would need to eat 10,000 kg of bread in a single meal to consume half a pound of this chemical – and still show no effects.

  14. Made it, loved it!! Hey, nice job on your appearance on the Alex Jones Show….that’s how I found you and subbed!!! l8r

  15. I live in Canada, and it’s all over the news that Subway today said they will be removing this toxic product from all their bread!! Hope this is true, how will we know that this is being done. I think because Food Babe has been on their case they just may be saying this for the media to get off their back.

  16. All of this is silly, the additive is approved by the FDA and USDA

Get a life people. babies are dying, kids are missing, find something that really matters and stop picking on large companies just to get people all hyped over simple issues

  17. SubWay:

First, you had “whole wheat” — then forced to rename “wheat”, when discovered Not to be whole wheat.

Thinking it was still a better choice than your various bleached white flour bread, I continued eating SubWay’s “wheat” bread — asking sandwich makers to scoop out most of bleached flour center.

Scooping, and reducing SubWay sandwich consumption from several per week to 3-4 per year, I thought I was getting by OK.

Now that your hidden (?) ingredient Azodicarbonamide has been discovered, not only in “wheat” bread, but also in ~7 other types, my only choice is to boycott all SubWay products, until a _Year_ after you keep this toxic ingredient out of your whole line.

Your bread is baked many times a day, in each SubWay store, so compliance should begin in a few days –without even delaying one week.

I am glad you are not polluting food in 101 other countries, and I hope you begin to protect the US chain as well.

    Thanks!

    1. Are you okay ? Subway isnt the only company that ues this ingredient . And dont you think if the fda approved it , its not bad .

  18. well, let’s also talk about the lack of sustainably raised meats and produce. we don’t eat fast food and thought Subway was a good alternative, but after reading about the toxins and the lack of good “clean” ingredients, I keep my kids away. more home cooking for me – with fresh and organic ingredients.

  19. Not just Subway, check your bread at home. Most bread you get at the store has that toxin in it.You have to go after all of the bread corporations not just Subway.I don’t want that in anything I eat.

  20. Yah, I was watching HLN and they said that Subway will be removing the chemical because of your petition. I am so happy that I could contribute in the fight! Keep up the great work FOODBABE!

  21. People, The voice of reason needs to prevail here. Know that when you choose to “boycott Subway forever” you are merely hurting the independent business person who is the franchisee that owns that particular location. The franchisee who employs several people in your community. The business person who gets by on razor thin margins already. The franchisee has no say in what is in the Subway Branded product, only required to use it by the Franchisor. Voice your concern, share your thoughts, start a movement, save the world, but focus your attention on the Franchisor, not the franchisee. Has “The Food Babe” ever worked for a living? Had to make a payroll? Given up a luxury, or merely been late on a mortgage payment to be sure her employee gets paid first, and vendors gets paid next? Or is she like many of our elected officials who cry wolf first, regulates second, then creates issues for the rest of us. Think about it please.

  22. Just watched the interview on Jake Tapper right now. Great stuff, getting this out there. Thanks on the great work!

  23. You really should be mad at the USDA, and not Subway. Just how many other breads have this chemical in it. The USDA is where the problem lays.

  24. I will never eat subway again. How disgusting. I will never trust anything i dont make myself now. Bread does not need all of these unhealthy ingredients. What happened to old fashioned simple recipes. Subway goes through this bread quickly everyday. Bake fresh so why need all of the chemicals. Disgusting that people are misled

  25. SHEETZ DOES THE SAME THING… they all need to get rid of it and High Fructose and all other unnatural ingredients.
    Ingredients in Sheetz subs
Wheat Bread Whole Wheat Flour, Water, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Wheat Gluten, Wheat Bran, Yeast, Contains 2% or less of: Soybean Oil, Salt, Dough Conditioners (Mono- & Diglycerides, Sodium Stearoyl Lactylate, DATEM, Ascorbic Acid, Calcium Peroxide, Azodicarbonamide, L-cysteine), Calcium Propionate (preservative), Calcium Sulfate, Monocalcium Phosphate, Sugar, Vinegar, Soy Lecithin. Contains Soy, Wheat.

  26. Now I finally know why I have not been able to eat store bread for the last 8 or so years. Thank you! I can eat artisan breads and bread from Whole Foods with no problem but have difficulty with store bread and not being able to digest it and unslakable thirst.

  27. Saw you on Jake Tapper and you were great! He kept quoting the safety of the ingredient and you kept saying that we are the only country that let’s that ingredient to be used in bread. Before another young lady spoke out , Gator Ade was using a fire retardant substance in Gator Ade. Yes it too was FDA approved, but I would never drink Gator Ade again. When I am eating, I am eating a food substance, not a piece of plastic or a chemical used to retard fire in childrens’ pajamas. A good come back for future could be, Mr. Tapper that’s the tobacco companies swore under oath how safe their products are. Mr. Tapper would you okay your children to injest a carcinogen that you knew that it could have a negative physical effect?

  28. Just noticed that Robin Hood Nutri flour blend OMega 3 & Fibre has Azodicarbonamide listed in its ingredients. This is a product of USA. I am in Canada and bought it here. Out it goes into the garbage.

  29. I’m always amazed with the dreadful educational standards that exist in the US that there are so many highly skilled chemists, biochemists, and toxicologists around, especially on the internet. I was not aware that you could get a Ph.D. from wikipedia.org. And to think I wasted all that time in the lab actually running reactions, deducing structures, and reading peer reviewed literature.

I’m sure this Vani “babe” thinks she’s doing the world a service, but really it is all just scare tactics from someone that has so scientific training at all and doesn’t understand one lick of actual chemistry or science of any kind. For those of you who want to listen to her and believe her unsubstantiated assertions, do a little research in actual scientific journals, not the internet, talk to actual scientists and see what they have to say. Don’t just take the word of someone with a blog, regardless of how many buzz words she can spout.

  30. She publishes this stuff, and they immediately remove it. Doesn’t sound like a villain company to me.

  31. Just wanted to thank you Vani, for bringing this issue of this chemical in the bread to light. I will wait until the chemical is removed before I visit Subway.

  32. Great initiative, but somewhat misinformed, why the focus only Subway? ADA is present in many wheat flours and commercial baked goods. It’s probably in all the fast food burger buns too.

  33. Subway has become disgusting lately…..It used to be quality food once, but it serves trash meat now. No new or good sandwiches at all. The more cheap they are making their sandwiches, the more deviated they become from their food quality.

It has become a restaurant for people looking for junk.

  34. SUBWAY: The bread has azodicarbonamide. The meats have nitrates. The cheese has natamycin. All of the vegetables are covered in pesticides. No wonder cancer and other diseases are becoming more common. YUCK!

    1. No Kidding…I’m really tired of all the food chains/etc, putting (Toxins) in our food! We all need to fight back where it hurts, which is in their pocket book, by not buying it.

    2. I’m really tired of all the food chains/etc, putting poisonous chemicals in our foods, and then keep telling us how healthy they are! The only real thing they care about is the $$$ we need to fight back by STOP eating their junk, and hit them in the pocket book where it counts, which is the only way they might get the point!!!

  35. Thank you FoodBabe for your dedication and your petition. Because of it, I saw it on my local news just 30 minutes ago on KING 5 News here in Seattle. Good job and CONGRATULATIONS! All those interviews on CNN, vids on YOUTUBE & your news letters are paying off!

  36. Stop using wheat flour in your bread. This is the same ingredient used in wallpaper paste. Stop using water in your bread. This is the same ingredient used in latex wall paint.
