The Healthiest Protein Powders On the Market

Years ago, I started adding a very delicious vanilla whey protein to my smoothies that I got from GNC. I was religious about using this one brand, and when they suddenly discontinued it, I became outraged!  I called every GNC in town searching high and low for it. It was the best tasting whey protein on the market and I didn’t want to go on a hunt for another kind. Well… long story short, I got to the bottom of why they discontinued it – the health department found rat droppings in samples of the protein at the manufacturing plant! WHAT. I’d been drinking rat droppings for all those years? @#$%&%&*^%^$$!

Needless to say, I have never looked at protein powders the same again. I research the heck out of them before I ever consider putting them in my body.

The key to finding a high quality protein powder is figuring out the right questions to ask…. Is it organic and free of pesticides? Is it GMO free? How is it processed? Does the processing retain its nutritional quality, vitamins and minerals? Does it contain artificial or refined sugars? Do they have heavy metals?

Yes…I said heavy metals. Consumer Reports conducted an eye-opening investigation that revealed that several popular highly processed protein powders like Myoplex, Muscle Milk, Designer Whey and GNC brand all contained arsenic, cadmium, and lead. Yikes.

This is just another reason why it is incredibly important to know what you are buying, where it is from and how it is produced.

So today…I want to share with you my Food Babe approved list of protein powders that are free of pesticides, GMOs, all those nasty chemicals and other grossities…

    1. Organic Plant Protein Superfood 30 Shake ($39.99 from Nutiva for 18 servings)Nutiva’s shake is made from certified organic whole food plant proteins – no processed whey or isolated soy and contains 20 grams of protein per serving! This shake is a blend of organic pea, pumpkin, sunflower, chia, hemp and sacha inchi proteins, along with 30 superfoods including reishi mushroom, baobab, moringa, kale, hawthorn berry, purple corn, sea buckthorn, kelp and cinnamon. It also tastes amazing, despite having no fake flavors, nasty chemical additives, and only 2g of sugar per serving. Unlike other protein manufacturers that never tell you what’s in their “natural” or “organic” flavors, Nutiva uses an organic flavor where they actually list what’s in it – vs. hiding it! All of these ingredients are ORGANIC too – so they are not using Roundup-Ready GMO corn and they use all organic ingredients to make the carriers for the flavors! This is a huge deal – not just with transparency, but the high level quality of each ingredient they choose. Also note – the sugars in the product come mostly from plants and fruits – not added sugar or stevia (which I think makes most protein powders taste kinda too sweet and some nasty!) I’m so happy that Nutiva formulated the BEST plant protein powder out there!
    2. Tera’s Organic Whey ($25 from Amazon for 12 servings) – There’s a lot of controversy about whether or not to consume whey within the health food community and from what I have researched – the benefits of consuming whey are valid for muscle building, muscle recovery and weight management. It just depends on what kind of whey you get and from where. You either you can pick low quality heat processed alkalinity stripping whey protein isolate – or you can pick cold processed whole food whey concentrate made from organic fed cows not treated with growth hormones or antibiotics. Tera’s whey is actually made in small batches and takes considerable care in how the whey is processed. Tera’s whey also comes in some very delicious flavors like blueberry and coffee that are real food based – not loaded with ambiguous “natural flavors.”(One caveat, I’d like to mention – if you decide to go with a whey protein, it’s crucial to maintain a diet high in other plant-based foods. This whey, although a good product that retains its nutritional profile, can be acid forming in large quantities just like a diet with an over emphasis on meat and dairy. Remember keeping your body alkaline is key to avoiding disease and eating a diet full of plant based foods is the only way to keep it that way.)
    3. Nutiva’s Hemp Protein – ($21.99 for 30 servings) – The ingredient label of this very nutritional protein supplement has one beautiful ingredient “organic hemp seeds.” This protein powder may not be for everyone, because the taste is definitely something to get used to.  But when combined with the right tasty ingredients like fruit, raw cacao and/or almond butter, it can be very appetizing. Finding the right balance of hemp protein to additional ingredients is the key to enjoying this rich in Omega 3 fatty acid supplement.

I’d love to know if you have tried any of these before or found any protein powders you like better.  Please leave a comment and let me (and others) know.

Bottoms up!

Vani

Updated 08/25/2016 to include new Nutiva protein powder and remove others I no longer use because they contain stevia and gums.

  1. I love the JuicePlus products and the whole food based Complete drink mix. It’s the best that I’ve tasted, both vanilla & chocolate – totally plant based, non-GMO, gluten free!

    1. We love the Juice Plus+ Complete too. I started out hardcore chocolate, but have since fell in love with the French Vanilla!

  2. I like Dr. Mercola’s Miracle Whey Protein Powder plain, because it has nothing in it except whey protein concentrate and sunflower lecithin. I tried the raw protein which tasted terrible and had yeast in it.

  3. My favorite is from http://www.BaselineNutritionals.com called Nutribody Protein. No GMOs, it’s GF/DF and low glycemic with 25g per serving of protein from organic sprouted brown rice and pea protein. Tastes great. Really good to travel with because I can mix it with water and go.

  4. Just curious why shakeology didn’t make the list? Its main focus is not to be a protein shake. It is to be a complete meal replacement with carbs, protein and nutrients. Was there something that you found in it that made you cross it off the list? They have vegan options as well. I drink this daily and follow your page so I would really like to know what your opinion is of the product. I switched feom gnc total lean powder to shakeology but It is pricey. If there was something you did not like about the product would you please share…I trust your opinion.

    1. I would like to know as well. I don’t personally drink Shakeology but I have a lot of friends that do. Also, the Body by Vi.

      1. Shakeology is not on the list because it is not a “protein shake”. Each serving has all your fruits and vegetables and super food ingredients for one day. Vanilla flavor with almond milk tastes the best. Having fresh organic veggies is still the best..

      2. My understanding is that Shakeology is not GMO, dairy, or soy free, contains GMOs and artificial colors/sweeteners.

    2. I would also like to know your thoughts on isagenix. I am currently trying it for this month.

      1. Isagenix is the best by far from what I have found from my research. Their whey is cold processed and from GRASS FED COWS from New Zealand whose standards are better than usda organic standards. the cows must be grass fed to have the proper balance for Omega 3’s Cows are not meant to eat corn. I am not aware of any other protein product besides Isagenix that uses grass fed cows.

    3. I used to drink Shakeology and am considering using it again. I too would like to know why it was crossed off the list. Thanks.

    4. Shakeology is a good shake but the protein is denatured. The Isagenix shakes use only UN-denatured whey protein from grass fed cows from New Zealand. Isagenix, I have found, are the superior shake on the market. If you cannot do Whey, they also have a Vegan shake. All their shakes are gluten free with no GMO’s.

  5. Ok, I have a stupid question about hemp. If I were to do a hemp protein powder, would that show up in a drug test? I am a flight attendant and we get random drug tests. Just curious. I don’t know a lot about hemp products.

  6. Hey Food Babe, I’ve been following you for a couple months now and I love all of the investigating you do! Idk if you’ve heard of Tone It Up but the trainers Karena & Katrina who started it have their own ‘Perfect Fit Protein’. I just started using it (it’s organic, gluten free, vegan, free of any major allergens and has stevia in it) and I really like it. I see you’ve talked a bit about brown rice being too starchy for you, but do you think this is a good protein powder/supplement?

  7. Hello Vani.
I am a newer follower. I was recently sent a link regarding your article about Subway (which my young daughter loves but no longer gets to eat and I thank you so much for informing me of what I was really feeding her). I have been following you ever since. I have now read this post regarding Protein Powders and see that Shakeology is not on your list. Would you please respond back to me and just let me know why? What is about about Shakeology that makes it one to not make this list? Is it still a good one to try, just not the best? I have a ton of it that we purchased to use as a meal replacement/weight loss aid and would love to hear from you! Thank you so much for your time!

  9. I’ve been using dr mercola’s whey protein powders along with his other products? How do they measure up?

  10. I have used RAW products for YEARS = LOVE them!!! I put a scoop in my coffee in the morning and now that’s the only way I want my coffee. It is a bit gritty so must be continually stirred or shaken but it does not thicken like pudding. I have also used it in some baking recipes and in making chocolate cups. SO GOOD! thanks for the review – I will continue to feel good buying it!

  11. I drink Shakeology daily as well. I have noticed huge differences when I drink it. I have heard only good things about it. I would also like to know why it didn’t make the list.

    1. My understanding is that Shakeology is not 100% organic certified and contains GMOs. Nor is it soy or dairy free and contains artificial colors/sweeteners.

      1. Lisa, Shakeology does have Vegan (non-dairy) options and there is no soy in any of the formulations. It does not contain artificial colors/sweeteners. Where are you getting your information?

  12. I love using Amazing Meal by Amazing Grass. It’s USDA certified Organic and it’s Vegan. It contains Wheatgrass, Barley, Spinach and Kale. Plus has Flax and probiotics as well as fruits and veggies. I lost 30 lbs drinking this shake for breakfast as well as eating healthy. I love this product!

  13. Just as Larissa asked about the Shakeology? I too trust your opinion!
I have tried the Nutiva Hemp Protein, it is a very distinct flavor and hard to cover! But I will keep trying it.

  14. I am currently using MRM veggie protein which is very delicious. I am going to try Garden of Life Raw and see how I like it!

    Thanks for the great info!

  15. I want to know if shakeology and vega are ok? I want to start drinking a shake in the morning and I use to use vega original flavor and loved it. I prefer them to be vegan

  16. Juice Plus Complete is the only one I trust to be safe. It was used in a study at MD Anderson with ovarian cancer patients, measuring quality of life. Published in journal Gynecologic Oncology 2012. You can find it on my website under clinical research.

  17. I use whey protein (vanilla) by Dr Mercola, as well as the Garden of Life (vanilla)Rice Protein. Both are quality products. You are so right, quality ingredients do matter! Thanks for the article and the work you do to inform others to make better choices!

  18. Hey Food Babe
What about Shakeology? I would like to hear your thoughts. Beachbody promotes it as a nutrient dense drink with all natural and non gmo ingredients. Please review.

  19. Yes, I’d like to know this too. I was planning to buy Vega this weekend based on the recommendation by Eco-Vegan Gal so before I switch to Garden of Life Raw (which looks like a good option as well) I’d like to know why Vega didn’t make the cut? I’ve recently gone Vegan but I have hypoglycemia and despite eating lots of whole grains and beans and legumes I’m still experiencing a bit of a crash so i think a high protein smoothie every day will help me out. I’m pregnant so that’s probably why, just need more food. Thanks Vani!

  20. I love the garden of life RAW vanilla protein powder!! I blend a shake every morning with almond milk, a chilled banana and a handful of frozen strawberries, and 2 tbsp of hemp seeds for added protein. Its yummy and leaves me full until lunch. My picky kiddo even likes them!

  22. Warrior Force is the only protein powder I’ll use. I’ve tried many, including the hemp seed one your show here and the Garden of Life. Both taste nasty and don’t fuel me as well. I teach high intensity fitness classes, sometime 2-3 in one day. I draw more real fuel energy from Warrior Force than any other powder I’ve tried. There is a vegan “natural” option that is flavorless. They also have vanilla and chocolate, which are extremely mild and not at all gross and sweet like so many others. My favorite is the vanilla. I blend it with Brown Cow plain Greek yogurt and frozen berries. Order online, http://www.healthforce.com – but wait a few minutes because the website is down 🙂 Or call, 800-35702717. No, I don’t work for the company. Just a fan. Thanks for the info Food Babe!

  23. AWESOME topic! As always ^^
I love all of Health Force’s products, great company.
I’m also curious on ur opinion on SunWarrior Blend 😉

  24. I love supplementing with Body by Vi. I have had better results even with the lower amounts of protein (though I do add an additional scoop to the 2 scoop serving) because Ive found the blend of non-GMO soy and whey absorb more readily. I also like that I am getting other nutritional support with the vitamins/ minerals, and added fiber. I also appreciate that I’ve been able to get my supplementation for free through their 3-for-free program for the past 18 months…. which has saved me a huge chunk of change from what I was previously spending at GNC/Vitamin Shoppe. http://www.waynenichols.bodybyvi.com

  25. Arbonne’s protein shake is amazing. Vegan certified and quality of the pea protein derived powder is excellent. Not only is it great for you on a cellular level (many nutritionist, MD’s and holistic practioners share this line with their patients), it taste incredibly great and offers a simple program to follow. http://www.arbonne.com.

  26. I use The Garden Of Life Raw daily after my workout or when I am super busy and need a quick pick me up. I love the taste, texture and integrity of the product.

  27. Juice Plus+ Complete is by far the BEST product on the market today! The MD Anderson ovarian cancer survivor patients-study says it all. Research, 100% plant based, non-GMO, Gluten-free, dairy-free and it even tastes great! Spirulina, radish, broccoli & alfalfa sprouts, PLUS a water-washed Soy protein blend that is second to NONE. Check it out Food Babe!!! Thanks for sharing this awesome information…..to many people think “their” product is the best, but in reality, the points you address are crucial to our health.
    Stay warm!

  28. Thanks Food Babe for your time researching and making this post. Your information is very helpful. To all those asking about this, that and the other protein not making the list why don’t you do your own research and form your own opinion just like she did. It’s not her objective to convince you to use the products she researched. She’s simply giving you some tools to maybe make an informed decision if you don’t like the choices move on.

  29. Does anyone realize this was written in 2012? Perhaps some of the products mentioned in a lot of these posts did not exist.

  30. Well, since you asked– I enjoy your FB page, and would love to get your opinion on It Works’ ProFit.stain-ItTM (Crossflow Microfiltered Whey Protein Isolate, Solagrain® Plus

    1. Joy, I am by no means an expert but if you read the information in above article on the second product she mentions that whey isolate protein is over processed and stripped of what’s good. Another ingredient to look at is the soy, is it GMO free? Are the ingredients organic? These are some of the criteria I look for when choosing a product. Hope this helps.

  31. Hello!

You probably have never heard of Zija or our Prime 90 with Moringa in it that is enzymatically alive and 100% bio~available, but our protein mix is like nothing on the planet…literally and the taste is just as amazing! Of course, I am in love, so I am now a disttributor, though this is not a sales pitch. Literally from performance to recovery and everything in bewteen, our products take the prize in all categories…olympians and professional athletes are starting to catch on….just YouTube or Google Zija’s Moringa and see what it can do for you!

      1. Rebecca, that is awesome! Find me on Facebook ~ Tracy Stover Davis and let’s compare notes! Zija is wonderful!!

    1. I love Plant Fusion! I especially like that it does not contain rice as my body does not digest it well.

      1. Yes! it certainly feels to me to be the right fit for my system and it’s not crazy expensive.

  32. I have a few friends that sell Arbonne and are always asking me to come to their detox or a facial party. I have done some research on them and all I have successfully found are people’s personal reviews (allowing me to see that they are not very truthful or healthy). Can you tell me about their products? I follow you, Food Matters, Hungry for Change, Drew Canole, etc. and LOVE, LOVE, LOVE all that I’ve learned from you all and want to be able to say no for the right reasons. My gut tells me that they are not able to give me the makeup, food supplies, etc. I want to use. If you can advise me, I’d love to hear what you have to say. Thanks!! LOVE your work. Love your articles. :)) xoxoxo

  33. I’ve been using Garden of Life’s RAW protein powder for several years now. It is the only one I will use. Having done research on these things myself and wanting to use the purest and highest quality foods in my body, I have found this one to be the best. I get the plain one and mix it in shakes with some fresh or frozen organic fruit and either purified water or organic unsweetened soy milk. It works great!

  34. My raw foodie pals love the Garden of Life. But I can’t do soy. Glad to have your research for some alternatives and eager to learn more about “truGanic!” Great concept.

  35. Prime-90 by Zija. It’s fairly new. I’ve been using their moringa based nutritionals and other products for two or three years now, and am amazed by the quality and results in health improvement. So I recently started adding the chocolate or vanilla Prime-90 whey protein powder to smoothies and LOVE it. http://www.parrent.myzija.com/products/pr1me90/index.html
PS – I love your website and recommend it to all my friends!!!

    1. Also, I never used to like other protein shakes because of the flavor and/or texture, but I’m really liking both flavors of the Prime 90 shakes. Vanilla is especially good with frozen fruit smoothies.

  36. I am IN LOVVVE! With the most meticulously formulated Protein shake EVER! Only shake in HISTORY with the astonishing benefits of the Muscadine skins and seeds! Holy Moley! No Whey, No Soy, No Rice…..completely hypo allergenic! Pea based protein! Nature’s Pearl’s full potency premium muscadine products are something everyone should check out. Brand spanking new and the MD that formulated it thought of everything!
Thanks for the above info Food Babe!

  37. Vani, Try the products from Purium. Their L.O.V.E. (Live Organic Vegan Energy) product is Certified organic, non GMO, gluten free, soy free, dairy free and vegan! they manage the whole process from farm to package themselves.
It packs a whopping 20 Grams of protein and 9 grams of fibre per serving.
Free $50 cash gift card at http://www.mypurium.com/healthylikeme

  38. Shakeology is not on the list because it is not a “protein shake”. Each serving has all your fruits and vegetables and super food ingredients for one day. Vanilla flavor with almond milk tastes the best. Having fresh organic veggies is still the best..

  39. I use BioTrust Nutrition’s protein. Love the taste. I think the company looks out for its customers and tries to sell a great product. Here is their link if anyone is interested in checking them out. http://www.biotrust.com.
