Turmeric Cooler

When I found this organic turmeric at the grocery store the other day, I squealed like a little pig!

Just the thought incorporating it even more in my diet is a dream come true.

Photo

I knew the first thing I wanted to do with the turmeric was kiss it… haha, just kidding.

Actually, I wanted to make juice!

Turmeric has the ability to reduce inflammation in the body naturally.

Did you know the inactive ingredients in different forms of over-the-counter medications include artificial food coloring made from petroleum, artificial sugars, sodium benzoate, GMO’s, propylene glycol and parabens?

These are ingredients I wouldn’t normally put into my body – and most definitely don’t want to subject my body to when I’m trying to recover from something.

When I had a bad accident a couple of years ago, I did not take painkillers long term, and I took turmeric in pill form to help my body to heal naturally. And I would not be sharing this story, unless it freaking worked! To this day – whenever I have an injury – I turn to turmeric.

But that’s just the icing on the cake – Turmeric has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine to treat a number of conditions and scientists believe that one of the reasons why turmeric is so powerful is that it contains curcumin. Its beneficial properties have been the subject of thousands of peer-reviewed and published studies

So now that I’ve hopefully convinced you to try this root…. I need to tell you that juicing turmeric can be really tricky. If you use too much – the juice can end up very bitter and not at all pleasant to drink.

I experimented with a few different blends that don’t use fruit juice or sugar (like most recipes call for) because I wanted to find a way to drink this all the time without having to consume the additional added sugar.

The blend that worked is so REFRESHING.  The coolness of the cucumber and romaine worked like a charm…. I hope you can find fresh turmeric root where ever you are… because this juice is the BOMB.

  1. Just be careful…I took a teaspoon full a day last year for several months to heal the inflammation in my neck and ended up frying my esophagus and stomach. SOOOO much pain and took several months to heal.

    1. I ended up with acid reflux after using turmeric (1/2 teaspoon powdered spice added to food once every day) in order to get the antioxidants. I read that countries that use a lot of turmeric have less Alzheimer’s but more cancer of the esophagus (?)

    2. I tried tumeric several ways and it helped with pain -however it caused some stomache issues and heartburn, acid reflex, etc. While reading up more on tumeric I discovered that many people have trouble digesting tumeric and they should take it with some sort of (good) fat ..i.e. milk ,cheese,yogurt..I also came across a recipe for tumeric milk.I know,at first I thought,YUK.Sounds horrid..But since the tumeric helped with pain..and I didnt want to suffer with the digestion issues,I gave it a shot.
I actually didnt mind it at all. I have even come to like and enjoy it very much.
Especially good just before bed….It’s so very soothing.
The recipe is very simple: tumeric, disolved in very warm milk and honey! Try it!! 😀

      1. Did you use powder or take it in pill form? I already have acid reflux and esophagus problems and not want to aggravate the situation but would like the benefits of the turmeric. Any suggestions? I don’t want to drink it.

      2. Think some have missed the point. Fresh turmeric is far from the harsh powder. I put about 1 gram in my smoothies every day! I also grate it into salads. THe taste is amazing! Go FRESH

      3. Yes, I love the taste of this drink and it feels so healthy. Was recommended by our Indian Grocery Store to drink it this way, just a pinch in milk.

    1. Thanks a lot for your information. We do take a lot of turmeric everyday. Now Ill try to remember all its uses .
      Love from Mom.

    1. I have a vitamix as well and I just add a teaspoon or dried tumeric or piece of fresh root, along with ginger to my “green drink” that I make every day. 1/2 carrot, 1/2 banana, kale, swiss chard, spinach, thick slice of ginger, half as much tumeric, brocolli and pineapple juice…..sometimes I add some frozen anti-oxident fruit blend or some frozen pineapple.

    2. If you make smoothies the YES you will love fresh turmeric!

I put about 1 gram of turmeric in all my smoothies! mostly spinach, kale berries and some time banana. other times aloe leaf (fillet) One constant I never leave out is Turmeric ! ONLY fresh I do not like the way the powder is its too harsh and peppery.

  2. Do you have any idea if you could ferment/pickle tumeric and still maintain the nutrient properties (like sauerkraut or pickled beets) so as to keep it longer and more readily available. I have a juicer but never get the chance to use it.

    1. You can preserve turmeric with lemon juice and salt. Just peel and chop the turmeric into small slivers and cover with lemon juice and salt. You can add slivered green chilis to this too. I just got my organic turmeric after reading this post.

    2. You can also include turmeric with other veggies in a kraut or kimchi-style lacto-ferment. I did this with sliced fresh turmeric root together with watermelon radish, red onion, ginger, garlic, hot pepper, fennel and sea salt. (There are instructions online about how to do lactofermentation for those who are new to it.) The turmeric is bitter but the combination was delicious. (Next time I’ll try to cut the turmeric smaller into slivers/matchsticks, which is how I did the ginger..) I don’t know if the health properties are the same whether the turmeric is raw, cooked or fermented with sugar or salt. Would be curious to know.

  3. I make a hot drink with dried organic turmeric.
I have about a tsp a day with no stomach problems what so ever.

1 T coconut milk powder in approx 3/4 c organic milk
Froth with espresso maker or heat in pan
Add 1/2 tsp powdered turmeric and 1 rounded tsp organic Ceylon cinnamon and whisk.
    Add stevia to taste.
Very soothing like hot cocoa or a latte

    1. Yes I do this too. But I mix 2T. turmeric with 1/4 c. water and warm gently on stove and add more water til it is a nice shiny pasty consistency 7-9 minutes. I add 1/2 tsp of this to 1 C. coconut milk, add 1 t. honey and some cinnamon and drink before bed. 1/2 tsp Udo’s oil. It’s a very good drink. Helps you sleep well too. And you can save the turmeric paste 2-3 weeks and use daily or add it to soups or chilis.

  4. Hey foodbabe, yay for you! aint it hard getting the ‘real deal’! instead ive opted for using ground turmeric in my smoothies – just a 1/2 teaspoon. Do you think I’d receive enough benefits from 1/2 teaspoon of the ground turmeric you get in the little jars in the spiced section, or should I up it or just omit it altogether? Obviously fresh is best, but not often easy. btw.. thank you for your inspiration – im feeling fabulous! 🙂

    1. It is hard to know the quality of ground turmeric but it’s not going to hurt so sprinkle away! Try to buy organic spices when you can. Glad to hear you are feeling great!

      1. Please let your readers know that they can likely access Azure Standard wherever they live, practically, and Azure carries organic tumeric monthly. 🙂

      1. I wanted to let you know about an amazing product called Enhansa. I buy it at the Lee Silsby Compounding Pharmacy in Cleveland but you can also purchase it online at http://www.leesilsby.com or http://www.ourkidsasd.com . They have different strengths and different sized capsules. It contains NO gluten, casein, corn, sugar, soy, milk, egg, yeast, preservatives, artificial colors or flavors. They have had amazing results with this product and children with Autism. Worth looking into for sure. The pharmacist their with the last name Israel developed it. Phone number is 1-800-918-8831 if you have questions. I have fibromyalgia and it helps!!!

      2. Sorry, I didn’t make it clear that Enhansa is an “Enhanced Absorption Curcumin Supplement”.

    1. Use Breville, I’ve been using it for the last 7 years nd I love it. Easy to clean, nd last for a long time.

    2. I recently got the Breville Juice Fountain for $150 on amazon. It is fantastic, and I have had no problems juicing greens – I wrap them around a carrot or celery and make sure the chute is full.

    3. I started with the Breville Centrifugal juicer and I liked the big opening (not having to chop up the veggies BUT when I tried the Omega Masticating model 8006 the difference in the quality of the juice was astonishing. GREENER, more flavorful, I felt it was worth the extra time to cut up the veggies. I fought against the Omega (because of the size of the opening) but I’ve never been happier with a Juicer.

  5. Hello sir, for long time i am suffering from extreme body temperature, my hb- has drop down these days, but seens i was in 7 th standard i took lots of medicine as i was suffering from heavy menses then after taking ayurvedic medicines now i dont have any problem related to mense, but my body temperature is so high that my palm, feet they literally burn my home town being India its very hot these days i can set for a min without AC. SO YOU PLEASE HELP ME OUT OF THESE PROBLEM

    1. Cucumbers have a natural core temperature lowering property- try eating a good sized cuke daily- you could even eat one a couple times a day!! Just wanna make sure you are not ingesting anything with Licorice root- as this will raise blood pressure and; high blood pressure makes you feel like you are on fire!! God Bless~
If you are menopausal- the hot flashes from your low estrogen levels are the cause of feeling hot constantly!!

      1. I had migraines for 37 years. I had gone through a lot of tests, including allergy, and had done an elimination diet which took 3 years. I saw an episode of Larry King on migraines and sent for the free info from the Headache Foundation. It had all the usual suspects on the food list plus the citrus. Which I was having all the time. I quit citrus on August 30, 1999 and have had one migraine since. Probably because I missed an ingredient in something somewhere. I try to tell people who have migraines about the high likelihood of food. They don’t believe it. They have been misled by food allergies causing digestive problems. When I tell doctors I don’t think they believe me. When I ask questions in a restaurant, people just think I am weird. I have never met anyone else allergic to citrus either. I remember the first time I had a migraine was eating homemade orange sherbet.

  6. I just tried this recipe, and it was fab!! I felt a real boost in energy and everything was just bright and jazzy. My first time juicing raw turmeric and it was amazing. Totally crushing on Food Babe right now.

      1. how much is a bunch of romaine lettuce and what do you mean to cut the ends of cucumber? why? and can I substitute the lemon for something else?

      2. Romaine is usually 2-3 dollars per head, depending on where you live of course! The Costco near me sells bags of organic romaine hearts (where the older outer leaves have been removed).

You cut off and discard the ends of the cucumber because they’re woody/hard and not generally eaten.

I’d imagine pineapple juice would be a delicious substitute for lemon!

  7. Great recipe, I look forward to trying it. I’m currently making one juice a day using turmeric and I love it. Just for something a little different with a small bit of fruit for sweetness if your interested.

    2 kale leaves
    2 handfuls of baby spinach
    2 cm fresh turmeric
    1cm fresh ginger
    150 ml coconut water
1 small green apple or kiwi fruit

This is delish and really good for you! Hope you enjoy 🙂

    1. Of course, start with a small amount to make sure you like the taste and then gradually add more…a few healthy sprinkles. I put it in scrambled eggs, stir fried veggies and soups sometimes too. Buy organic if you can.

      1. Is dry tumeric as good as the fresh one? i try to find fresh tumeric. i cannot find it to save my life…any good address online maybe that sale fresh tumeric?

  8. I just tried your Tumeric juice recipe on the suggestion of my daughter. I’ve had chronic muscle ache due to extensive surgery on my side. I’d been using Advil, but was open to using this juice. It’s been very effective, and I’m happy not to be using medication, but I’m not sure what amount of Tumeric Juice to take daily.
    Could you advise? Thanks..

    1. I would drink one juice daily and if you feel you need more, you could try a supplement and take as directed. Good luck!

  9. By the way… Propylene glycol was added to antifreeze so it wouldn’t kill animals when they drank it. It’s used in tons of other products safely. The “used in antifreeze” line is ignorant at best, and deliberately trying to cause alarm at worst.

    1. This article is from the Pet Poison Helpline

      Propylene Glycol

      Poisonous to: Cats, Dogs

Level of toxicity: Generally mild to moderate, depending on the amount ingested and if ethylene glycol is present

      Common signs to watch for:

      Severe sedation
      Walking drunk
      Seizures
      Tremors
      Panting
      Anemia
      Lethargy
Propylene glycol is a colorless, nearly odorless, thick liquid found throughout the household and garage. It is the main ingredient found in “pet-friendly” automotive antifreeze (Sierra® antifreeze), but is still considered to be poisonous to pets (although less poisonous). It is often used as a solvent, and is found in medications, ice packs, hydraulic oils, etc. When ingested by pets, propylene glycol can result in severe sedation, walking drunk, seizures, tremors, panting, anemia, and lethargy. Unlike ethylene glycol, it does not result in acute kidney failure.

    2. It’s the PG that kills the animals!! No living, breathing being should be ingesting even the smallest amount of this poison.

      1. I think the point DT was trying to make is that propylene glycol is not the noted “dangerous” chemical in antifreeze that we are accustomed to hearing about – that particular chemical is actually ethylene glycol, which causes pretty much instantaneous death to any creature that imbibes it. PG has been used in recent years as a less-toxic substitute. Of course it still causes problems – it is intended for an industrial purpose and I would not recommend anyone go drinking random fluids from their car. However, I will take an anemic, lethargic pet who needs a few days to recover over one who drops dead within an hour or two due to acute renal failure any day.

Using alarmist statements is foolish and unnecessary if the item you are discussing is really as good as you say it is.

  10. Just (very important) correction. You state,

Did you know that the inactive ingredients in different forms of Advil include artifical food coloring made from petroleum, artificial sugars, sodium benzoate, GMO’s, propylene glycol (the stuff used in anti-freeze for your car) and parabens?

It’s actually ethylene glycol that’s in antifreeze.

    1. I’ve also been taking Turmeric/Curcumin for 3 years on the advice of my oncologist. Apparently it is absorbed better when taken with something with fat and with black pepper. I take 2 grams a day in capsule form. I just saw fresh Turmeric in Whole Foods the other day and plan on trying it grated in food and/or in a smoothie.

      1. I take the capsules and sprinkle it in everything I cook. I have stage 4 cancer and hope it’s helping to slow down or kill my cancer.

      2. I agree that fresh for a daily regimen might be better, and likely more nutritious or nourishing in the long run. But we sometimes make a yummy hot drink at night, using all powders. We use (liquid)coconut milk, cinnamon ,turmeric, and ginger, with a bit of pepper. The amounts are to taste.Like it better than hot chocolate. Always makes my tummy feel better!

  11. I totally love this! I have never seen fresh turmeric here in India, but since it’s grown here I am sure I can find it! I am so happy that you are encouraging it’s use as I keep telling my mother that it is better than any western medication for her arthritis. Happy juicing everyone!

  12. Thank you for turmeric recipe!!!! Back in 2004, 5, or 6 I read about a study that found combining turmeric with Broccoli or cauliflower–not only did it prevent prostate cancer but it also healed lab rats that already had it. If memory serves me right the study was conducted at John Brown university, I know article I read was printed in the Washington Times.

  13. I have been reading lately that the curcumin is better absorbed into your system if it travels in a good fat (curry is an example). Do you have any opinion on this?

    1. That’s definitely true- without good fat it’s most likely to just give you bad heartburn, which is why Indians only really have it in curry or milk 🙂

    2. I would suggest adding a heaping teaspoon of coconut oil to the mixture of veggies & turmeric !

  14. Why not take it in capsule form if available? Why juice turmeric if there is an easier way to ingest it?

    1. Hi Michele – capsule form is fine if you want. The reason we like to juice it is because it is delicious and it is always better to eat the real food instead of the supplement if possible. Enjoy!

      1. I have seen in this blog that some were complaining of stomach issues after using turmeric. I take it the raw juice is easier on your stomach than the dried power. If so do you know why? Also…of the fresh root, how much is the recommended amount to take daily. Getting used to the taste is not the issue. I love it along with ginger, carrot, cucumber, and apple. I’m excited for next year. I have access to plenty of fresh root and I’m planting it! 🙂

  15. Unbelievable the health benefits..
Apparently it is even effective against depression:
    http://www.naturalnews.com/041625_turmeric_anti-depressants_depression_treatment.html

I started researching more and more about this and found that like any good thing you can take too much… but it is still something I think that everyone should consider as part of their regular diet. Great stuff.
I cook it into eggs with coconut oil.. I read somewhere that fat draws out the good stuff (like hemp I guess).
    Thanks for the article.

  16. I just purchased some turmeric extract (one serving 1/4 tsp contains 1,400 mg of turmeric) and have been taking it according to the label which states 3 times per day.

My question is when you were taking it for pain, how much did you take per day? I had an injury to my neck in a car accident many years ago and I still have episodes of severe pain and also headaches. I get adjusted by my chiropractor weekly which helps but I want to try this as well.

    Thanks!

    Chrissy

  17. Turmeric is undoubtedly an amazing spice with an incredible array of healing qualities, but I would caution people to not go crazy on the amounts they use. Two tablespoons seems like way too much for one serving. Too often we (Americans especially), tend to think that more is better when more often than not it’s the synergistic effects of smaller amounts over time that provide a safe dosage. Except of course, for those situations where your dealing with acute conditions. Perhaps a good gauge would be to look at the serving size on a supplement bottle, base your dosage on that and not exceed it by too much.

    1. Finally, an intellingent person comments! I ended up on this page by accient while reaserching some SCIENTIFIC information on Turmeric and couldn’t resist to read. It’s unbelievable how misinformed some people are… so misinformed , they look up to bloggers, who , judging by this article, don’t know a whole lo more than they do…

  18. I’ve just bought a weeks worth of fozen tumeric shots (30mls each) but now I’m a bit hesitant in drinking it since so many have voiced quite a few side effects. I thought it was a good idea at the time but I’m not to sure if there is a limit that I should be consuming each day. Do you think 30mls worth is too much?

    Many thanks

  19. Asha,
I would say perhaps, start by taking no more than one a day for the first week or two to see how your body responds to it. If you feel the need to increase it after that then do so slowly. I take one capsule in the morning with my breakfast and one at night before going to bed. That’s a maintenance dose for me and it suits me just fine.

  20. It’s called Haldi Ka Doodh (literally translates as Turmeric Milk)- Turmeric needs to be taken with a healthy fat which is why most indians drink it with warm milk. It’s best made with fresh turmeric root (not ground) boiled in milk. I usually add a cinnamon stick, star anise and peppercorn to be boiled with the turmeric, and then sweeten with honey 😀

  21. I am planning to get a juicer People say the latest vitamix juicer is the best Any suggestions I had bought the Jack Lalane juicer from Cosco I did not like it and returned it Now I need a juicer

  22. Tip: you can easily grow this at home. For instance in the photo above of the packaged root take one rhizome with fingers, cut in half so each piece has a bud sticking up, bury in potting soil. Takes a long time so don’t get discouraged.

  23. Hi, great site..

We use a concoction of 1 part fresh turmeric, 3 parts fresh garlic , juice or grate ( I use an Angel Juicer and combine the dry pulp back with the juice into a paste ) then mix with coconut oil and pour into a tray around 10mm thick ( just under half inch ) then let set in fridge, cut into small squares (10mmx10mm or so) and eat one every two days. So far been at it for 4 months and felt a huge improvement in energy, general mental alertness and zest for life. Also cut out a lot of sugars which no doubt would have added to the improvements.
Now growing some ourselves to hopefully never be without fresh Turmeric !

  24. My only issue with juicing tumeric is that it stains! I juiced it once and immediately washed my juicer, but I was left with such stains on all the pieces that I just couldn’t scrub off. Especially on the centrifuge part of the juicer. I’ve stuck with dried powder into my smoothies ever since.

  25. Glad you found turmeric but at $2.55 for .17/ lb…yikes! You can buy a kilo of turmeric root for that price here in the Philipoines. I don’t have a juicer but I’ve been drinking turmeric regularly and I had only 2 migraine attacks in 2013. Yay! I used to have migraine almost every month before that. I brew turmeric with ginger and add lemon once the brew cools and pour it in a pitcher and store the refrigerator. Sometimes I add raw honey but most of the time I don’t put sweetener. It’s my favorite beverage. I will make a smoothie with your recipe. Thank you.

    1. To Patricia (1) I made that drink(Turmeric, Ginger, Lemon) and it was delicious. Did not make enough, so made two more batches. Only 1 qt made to the fridge. I love it hot, It so soothing.

      To Others:
Fresh turmeric is readily available and cheap! very inexpensive! in San Diego area at the Mediterranean Markets, Whole World International Markets, Asian Markets, .Farmer’s markets. I found some frozen at one of the Asian markets. I tried it, and it was great. I will be freezing mine now.

      thanks all who contributed.

  26. I have been taking Tumeric for about 5 years now in capsule form 2000 mg a day for pain and it has never caused me any problems.

  27. Do you know if turmeric is safe for use in pregnancy? Ibuprofen isn’t recommended by the health board where I live for pregnant women so I wonder if turmeric would be a good alternative. Thanks!

  28. Try 1-2 tsp tumeric powder, 1 tsp coconut oil, 1 tsp raw honey, few shakes black pepper ( helps increase bioavailablity).
    It tastes like frosting!!!
Try to use organic ingredients whenever possible, right Food Babe?

  29. I blend equal parts Turmeric (Both yellow and orange) with fresh ginger root in hi PH water equal to about 6 times the root (so about 4-5 cups water to 3 large roots of each (about 1/2 lb total) until fine pulp. Strain well into jar – dry or freeze the pulp to use in cooking.
Add from a few teaspoons to a 1/4 cup to a teacup, add warm water and enjoy a turmeric tea.
Feeling bowel sluggish? Add fresh lemon to your tea (about 2 slices).

    Yummy!

  30. Wonderful blog! I found it while browsing on Yahoo News.

Do you have anyy suggestions on how to get listed in Yahoo News?
I’ve been trying for a while but I never seem to get there!
    Thannk you

  31. Turmeric is awesome. Be sure to take it with some kind of fat – like with a meal – you absorb more of the active ingredient, curcumin.
About 5% of Turmeric is Curcumin. Turmeric is high in iron, manganese, potassium, vitamin B6, and vitamin C, as well as many antioxidants. Turmeric is also claimed to help strengthen the immune system, improve digestion, and promote cardiovascular health and has been found to counteract cognitive impairment after brain injury in a study involving rats!

  32. This is why my Company has it formulated to be easy on all parts of the body and still in natural form…I take my WavEmpower supplements everyday and it has helped heal my thyroid cancer…It also helps with my weight…I will NEVER stop taking this amazing Supplement. If youre interested in taking it in the safest form possible get it here> http://www.oceanavefit.com, Its called WavEmpower… research it yourself…

  33. I made this and it turned out swampy green, not the beautiful yellow. Not sure what I did wrong. I even used one yellow carrot.

The taste isn’t the best I’ve had. Hopefully the headache and menstrual cramps I’ve been having will go away though.

  34. I was excited about the idea of taking turmeric extract in pill form rather than Advil, etc. However, when I clicked on your link Food Babe, it took me to Amazon to a New Chapter pill called Turmeric Force. When I checked the ingredients it includes maltodextrin and silica, among other things. I JUST finished reading your post on Stevia and GMOs where you warn against these two ingredients. Are you telling me that you ingested these ingredients willingly? It doesn’t add up. Isn’t there a better option for turmeric extract out there??

  35. I had the kind of staph infection that is impervious to anti biotics. I didn’t realize I could purchase curcumin (tumeric) pills already made; so I made my own capsules. I took 2 pills three times a day, then after 2 days, 1 pill three times a day. After 7 days the staph infection was completely gone and has never come back – in 6 years.
The doctor and nurse were stunned. I explained that tumeric has been used in India for thousands of years. My mother in law used to heal people with it in the middle east.

As with everything, too much is probably not good, but a little tumeric goes a long way and I swear this is what healed me – cleaned my blood – and killed the infection that modern medicine could not affect.

This root is amazingly valuable and of course, used properly, is an anti inflammatory and blood cleaner in my personal experience.

  36. I would like to know the differences in properties between cooked and raw turmeric. Also, is it not better taken with Cayenne powder rather than black pepper (piperine)?

  37. I am pardeep Malik from motihati bihar . If u intersted 500 quntial rew turemric buying . Turemric qualty gorya best root Sir 1400 rs. per qunal price in motihari bihar . R contact me 08683040005

  38. I could not tell what kind of juicer you meant to use: the Blendtek juicing function (like Vitamix) or my centrifugal juicer that removes pulp (good for raw crackers). So, I used the Blendtek “juicer ” and it’s more smoothie- like. Which juicer did you intend? Thanks !

  39. I absolutely love this juice it makes me feel fabulous, my headaches are gone since I started juicing but also Ido t feel bloated and I know turmeric or curcuma has a lot to do with that result. Thanks for posting this and help us change our lives.
