Weekend Wrap Up & Questions Answered

...by Food Babe

Hope everyone had a fantastic, sunny and bright weekend! There have been quite a lot of questions as of late on my Facebook Fan Page about some of the specifics around my eating, juicing, and smoothie habits….So before I start a recap of my everyday eats… I’d like to share these questions and my answers for all of you to benefit from… here we go…

1.  Do you juice fast every morning or do you eat a breakfast of solids and then drink your juices later in the day? Just curious about the lightest foods to heaviest foods principles and wanting to make sure all of these organic (expensive!) green and orange juices i make are easily digestible.

It depends.  First off, I always try to drink my juices on an empty stomach – whether it be first thing in the morning, after a workout, or later in the evening before dinner.  I make sure It’s been at least 2 hours since I ate last.  The reason for this is because I want to immediately absorb the energy from the juice upon consuming and don’t want this energy absorption to be slowed down by food that is digesting in my body.  I prefer to have my juice earlier in the day, especially after my workout – but sometimes this isn’t possible because of my schedule or if I have or haven’t juiced recently. The key point to remember here is to drink juice on an empty stomach and wait at least 20 mins before consuming anything else. I also agree with the philosophy of eating lighter foods throughout the day and heavier foods at night. I’ll be doing a post on this sometime soon where I will go in more detail about why.

2. Do you suggest this recipe for a healthy smoothie –
banana
, almond milk
, yogurt, and
spinach? What about peanut butter?

This combination looks good to me, as long as the yogurt is certified organic. The reason I say this is because conventional dairy products like yogurt has been hijacked with growth hormone and antibiotics. Growth hormone is a proven carcinogen, as well as the protein “casein” that is already in yogurt. This is why I don’t  include yogurt in my everyday diet – I may have it once in a while with Indian Food or while traveling.  (My mom makes her yogurt fresh from organic milk.)  Because I have it in extreme moderation – If it were me – I would substitute a couple of tablespoons of chia seeds, flaxseeds and protein powder in this smoothie vs. the yogurt or peanut butter.

I posted this photo on my Facebook page – with the caption “The amount of liquids I am taking to work, is getting ridiculous” and it got a slew of questions -

What I Want to Watch Now…

...by Food Babe

I hate when I used to catch myself wishing the days of the week would go by faster so I could get to the weekend. Wishing away so many days of my life. Now, everyday, I make a point to remember that “time” is the only thing I can never get back, that life is short, and to make every moment count. Practicing this mindset creates so many more episodes of daily joy and happiness for me.

On that note – HAPPY WEEKEND! Woot! Woot!

I am headed down to South Carolina tomorrow – I can’t wait to see those joke playing rascal in-laws of mine…I miss them dearly. It’s my Father in-law’s birthday – I made some Chocolate Goji Sea Salt Drops for him last night. Hope he likes them.

I plan to share some of my everyday eats while I’m down there – so stay tuned.

Until then – I thought I would share 7 movies I want to watch now! These trailers really grabbed my attention. Which one’s look interesting to you? Have you seen of these yet?

“Thrive” – Energy is so powerful.

Dear Jillian Michaels – Shut Your Lips About Pop Chips!

...by Food Babe

IMG 0295

Dear Jillian Michaels -

Can you please kindly shut your lips about Pop Chips? You say in this video I linked to below that Pop Chips have “no preservatives, no trans fat, no msg, no artificial nothing” – These are chips “Your kids will love ” and “Something you can feel good about…”

But I don’t think so.

You see, I know you know what I’m about to tell you.  The reason I know you know this is because you are very well educated about the topic of chemicals in your food and have access to world renowned nutritionists, biochemists and all sorts of other experts at the top of their fields.  You wrote a well explained and eye opening book called ”Master Your Metabolism” – remember?

You also have the most amazing podcast every week, where you share incredible information about living chemical free. And when you were on the Biggest Loser – I really loved the fact that you didn’t want to promote certain products like “Brita Filter” until they discontinued the use of BPA in their plastics, remember?! !

So what happened?!  Did Popchips give you an offer you couldn’t refuse?…Maybe they are giving you their first born child?  I know you are looking to adopt, but seriously.

Jillian, you specifically say that Popchips “don’t have MSG” …. but when I look at the back of a package of BBQ, Sour Cream Onion, Sea Salt & Vinegar or other flavors – I see the words “YEAST EXTRACT, AUTOLYZED YEAST, SODIUM CASEINATE, AND/OR NATURAL FLAVOR” all glaring back at me.  I know you know these are all hidden names for MSG.  Don’t even act like for one minute you didn’t know this and play dumb.

Let’s pretend, however, for a minute you didn’t know this.  Using the word “yeast extract” in replace for MSG is a common deceptive tactic used by food manufactures to hide “glutamic acid” in our foods without labeling it.  (This is the same acid that makes up the majority of MSG.) Because yeast is naturally occurring, Popchips and other companies can legally say they don’t use MSG.  This is a ridiculous, because the additives whether they are called “natural flavor” or “yeast extract” or “autolyzed yeast” can still contain up to 75% glutamic acid – the acid associated with “reproductive disorders, migraine headaches, permanent damage to the endocrine system leading to obesity and other serious disorders.”

Due to lack of FDA regulation, it is impossible to determine what percentage MSG is in food – so the food industry gets away with using it several times in a product under different names and in any amount they see fit to literally “excite” your taste buds. Glutamic Acid is absorbed very quickly in the gastrointestinal tract, causing brain cell damage and neurotoxicity.  Glutamic acid literally excites your brain cells to death.

Looking at back at your book – You say MSG is “downright evil” and to “avoid it at all costs,” which makes total sense to me considering the effects from its consumption. So why are you now saying it’s ok to eat Pop Chips that contain not 1 but potentially 3 hidden sources of MSG?

I really didn’t think that anyone could fool “America’s Toughest Trainer” – but maybe I was wrong.

With Great Respect,

Food Babe

P.S. If I ever meet you, please don’t beat me up.

Check out the FAQs from The Pop Chips website about MSG in their products – They are pulling a similar move as Yoforia – Selling a better for you “base” product and then playing tricks on you.

do popchips have msg or other flavor enhancers? no way. we only use all-natural flavors. because we promise our fellow snackers all-natural, and we mean it.

Here’s the video from Jillian Michaels where she states that Pop Chips don’t have MSG -

It’s the Weekend – Woot! Woot!

...by Food Babe

Happy Happy Weekend Everyone!!! Can you tell I’m excited!?!

Before I go plop my booty on the couch for the rest of the evening, I wanted to share my eats today…

Today started with hot water with lemon and cayenne – Habit #1 (Who’s doing this too?! – Have you adopted this habit yet?)

Followed by 2 heaping tablespoons of Vitamineral Greens superfood powder… Did you know this serving size has 10 grams of protein for only 50 calories! And it’s all plant based!  Amazing, huh?

I did an energizing hour of cardio before work and made this kale smoothie, which I enjoyed at my desk…..

Another Fabulous Vegan Potluck…

...by Food Babe

Good Evening!

I broke Habit #3 last night – but for good reason.

I started the day with Habit #1 and Habit #4 (do you know these habits by heart yet?) I also had some protein powder mixed with chia seeds after a quick 3 mile run.

IMG 0212

I practiced another Habit #4 with a Hari Shake before lunch….

IMG 0213

I followed the shake about an hour later with a salad at my desk. I don’t really like eating at my desk, but you gotta do what you gotta do… especially when there are back to back meetings you have no control over.

I have complete and utter control over what I put in my mouth, though. I stuffed it full of quinoa, arugula, tahini, red peppers, carrots, red onion and raisins, a few buckwheat crackers with almond butter too. Oh and I had a few Mary’s Gone Sticks & Twigs – Have you tried them yet? – they are so great when you are feeling all snacky snacky and want something crunchy crunchy!

NewImage

After work I did a quick 45 mins of yoga at home – I needed to decompress from sitting all day long.  I did a few hand stands during my sequence… I’ve been feeling rather dizzy at random times during the day since I started practicing them… hopefully this will subside with time.  Any yogis out there experience this?

Last night, I spoke at “Three Weeks to Wellness” and was invited to another amazing vegan potluck before my talk… I made lots of Forever Cookies with cherries to share with all the cleansers just like last time.

I was kinda mad at myself – because I didn’t write down directions to the new gathering spot and I was late. I missed all the yummy food explanations (my favorite part), so I honestly don’t really know what I ate for dinner. My plate looked like this and everything tasted fantastic.

IMG 0218

At the cleanse, I got to catch up with Scott Harris, the owner of Viva Raw. He was doing the cleanse and brought fresh juice for everyone to try. Viva Raw uses local and organic produce to make their juices and will deliver them to your door if you live in Charlotte. I’ve tasted Viva Raw juices and their protein blend a couple of times now and definitely recommend them, especially if you want to do a juice cleanse!

IMG 0222

We had the vegan potluck at Plan Breathe – I haven’t done a breath works class there yet – but I heard it’s like tripping on oxygen. Sounds fun!

IMG 0223

My talk was about dairy.  My favorite moment was hearing the room get silent when I talked about how the female cow is the #1 over worked animal in the world.  Typically kept pregnant by artificial insemination for 7 months out of every year – which equates in human terms to us running about 8 hours every single day for 7 months. Can you imagine the toxic stress hormone we would produce in our bodies if we did that?  Well it’s the same for the cow – and you are consuming those toxins if you consume dairy products. (Maybe I should video tape the next talk I am giving in Feb – so I can play it for all of you…? What do you think?)

At the end of the night – Elle presented me with the most beautifully gorgeous wrapped gift in a vintage apron. A special something from her fashion inspired business – Urban Gypsy.

IMG 0232

Even though I ate a full plate of food…I came home at 10pm absolutely starving! I went straight into the pantry and made a big bowl of “candy”!

IMG 0197

Breaking Habit #3 was worth it, don’t you think?

In honor of the cows – I’m going to sign off with a big loud….

Moooooo!
