How To Beat Sugar Cravings & Addiction For Good!

This is one ingredient that has been brought up to me many times that I haven’t spent a lot of time covering, but given the state we are in with so many food industry deceptions happening, I needed to do more than just write an article about it. This ingredient is considered “natural” too.

So I sat down with my team and we talked a lot about how to solve this issue. We’ve spent the last few months working on real-life solutions – that I know many of you are going to want to take part in.

Many people have tried to simply stop eating sugar, and have failed. Most of us are on a sugar cravings rollercoaster and don’t know how to put on the brakes. Even if you think that you don’t eat very much sugar and don’t struggle with constant cravings, you might be surprised at the number of products advertised as “healthy” – including some popular health supplements – that are loaded up with refined sugars like white sugar, corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup or even worse – artificial sugars!

Did you know that 80% of the shelves in the grocery store would be empty if all the food with sugar was removed? It’s in almost everything – Check your barbecue sauce, breads, yogurt, crackers, frozen dinners, condiments, salad dressings, pickles and peanut butter – it’s probably in there! All of this has led to a completely ludicrous amount of sugar in our diets.


FACT: The average American consumes about THREE POUNDS of sugar every single week in their regular diet.

You might be wondering how this is even possible. Let me tell ya, this is no accident! The processed food industry has made it almost impossible to avoid sugar because they know it’s addicting and they want to keep you hooked!

Sugar is very similar to a drug. It instantly makes you feel euphoric as it releases neurotransmitters that give you a burst of happy energy – it feels a lot like LOVE! But these feelings quickly disappear and leave you feeling tired and craving more. Regular intake of sugar quietly wreaks havoc on your body, plumps up your fat cells, and makes pimples poke out on your face, while ultimately putting you at risk for a whole host of serious health issues… obesity… skin disorders… fatty liver disease… type 2 diabetes… heart disease… dementia.

Surely you think I’m exaggerating, but I’m not. The truth really is stranger than fiction!

In 2007, researchers found that when they fed refined sugar to rats they became addicted. So addicted in fact, they found it to be more addictive than cocaine! The processed food industry plays on this fact and carefully engineers their products to hit what they call the “bliss point” that keeps you wanting more and more. They have refined the art of addiction so well, that we have become accustomed to consuming sugar day after day, and we don’t even realize how much. 

Why should you avoid sugar? 

Sugar is what I think of as a “soft kill”, as in it may not kill you today… but it will tomorrow. You feel its seemingly positive effects immediately when you eat it (when you get a sugar high), but its detrimental effects can take years to surface. If you have any doubts about the affects of sugar in the diet, just listen to these health experts:

  • A study conducted by the University of New South Wales concluded chronic sugar intake triggers changes to the hippocampus, the area of the brain which is important for both memory and stress.
  • Dr. Joel Kahn says, “When my patients go on a sugar detox – I see improvements in blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels. Hearing how good they feel is just icing on the cake – they have experienced more energy, a clearing of brain fog, glowing skin, and greater calm.”
  • A scientific review in Mayo Clinic Proceedings warns that refined sugar in the diet is the principal driver of Type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
  • According to Dr. Mark Hyman, regular sugar consumption leads to type 2 diabetes, inflammation, high blood pressure, poor sex drive, increased risk of cancer, and depression.

  1. I’ve seen that stat too, how sugar is more addictive than cocaine! I used to be a plump teenager/college student and one day I decided to get healthy. And quit sugar. Changed my life and I’m slimmer, feel great, have tons of energy and no dark circles under my eyes! My skin looks bright and happy, and it has always been acne prone. The pro’s far outweigh any negatives and I’m so glad I FINALLY got serious about my health!! My mom is always telling me “Laura, cancer loves sugar, it feeds on it” so know sure if that’s 100% true, but I’m buying it.

    1. You will not regret quitting sugar I promise!!! It’s like giving up smoking or alcohol, it will not be easy for some, but you can do it! I became addicted to sugar via protein shakes and I could not live one day without something artificially sweetened to eat. Once I quit sugar, my moodiness, dark undereye circles, and lack of energy disappeared! The mental clarity and emotional stability I have far outweigh the quick sugar “high” that you get from it. Do it for yourself, you will not regret quitting sugar! It can be done! It took about 2 to 4 weeks before I finally stopped having serious cravings and mood swings. I still crave it every now and then, but I will never go back.
