Insane facts about Doritos + How To Make Homemade Doritos (RECIPE!)

A recent survey revealed that Doritos are the most popular snack in America, out-ranking M&M’s.

I probably shouldn’t be surprised. I can hardly recall a time that I’ve gone to a party or outdoor cookout where Doritos aren’t being served. Have you ever wondered WHY this is? What makes them so appealing?

I did some digging and found some insane facts about Doritos…

100 million Americans consume Doritos each year. And 6.65 million Americans consume 8 or MORE bags a month.

Eight bags a month! WOW! I told you…It’s insane how popular Doritos are.

Doritos are designed in a factory to be highly addictive:

First, they contain MSG.

MSG is only added to food to make it taste so irresistible that you keep coming back for more. MSG is what they feed rats in scientific studies to make them fat. It also is associated with increased risk of obesity in humans. Studies show this additive can help you gain weight, despite how many calories you eat.

Then they pile on “Natural Flavors” and “Artificial Flavors”.

These are proprietary mixtures crafted in a lab, which are very similar to MSG. These flavors are designed so that you experience the best 1 millionth part of the taste – so you keep wanting to go back for more and more, searching continuously for gratification – eating more of that product.

Sound familiar???

This is how they hijack your taste buds so you can’t stop eating Doritos. And keep buying more!

This is concerning because Doritos in America are filled with artificial colors that they don’t use in other countries. These artificial colors are derived from petroleum and linked to several health issues, including allergies and hyperactivity in children, which require a warning label in Europe. Recent research shows they may also disrupt the immune system.

Doritos in the U.S. also contain GMO ingredients and have tested positive for Roundup weedkiller residues linked to cancer.

If you eat Doritos, is it time to stop buying them?

The decision is yours.

Thankfully, I found a way to make Homemade Doritos, so you can stop buying the ones full of MSG and artificial ingredients.

This homemade version tastes incredible too, especially when they are still a bit warm from the oven! You’ll find my recipe for Homemade Doritos (which are organic and non-GMO) in the Food Babe Kitchen cookbook. If you don’t have my cookbook yet, I’ll post the recipe for you below so you can try it ASAP!

  1. I Dearly Love Doritos! But have not eaten them and definitely not bought them in years. I have eaten them very occasionally at parties – but only a very few. And yes – they are difficult to stop eating!!!
I stopped buying/eating them because of the GMO corn and MSG many years ago. Then I started hearing and reading about the very questionable ingredients labeled as “natural flavors” – which I knew were – rather dark – as it were. So – if I’d ever had any thoughts about buying them at any point in time – that pretty much guaranteed that I would not!

I’m so happy you’ve created a recipe for homemade Doritos! I will definitely be making them! They sound delicious!!!

    Thank you Vani!

  2. GMO corn is only used as animal feed in the US, please educate yourself!
The is an organic version of Doritos without MSG and artificial colors!

    1. GMO corn and soy dominates US agriculture. It is NOT just used in animal feed. Taken from the Non-GMO Project’s website: “Most packaged and processed foods contain ingredients derived from corn, soy, canola and sugar beet — and the vast majority of those crops grown in North America are genetically modified.”
Furthermore … “GMOs also sneak into food in the form of processed crop derivatives and inputs derived from other forms of genetic engineering, such as synthetic biology. Some examples include hydrolyzed vegetable protein, corn syrup, molasses, sucrose, textured vegetable protein, flavorings, vitamins, yeast products, flavors, proteins, sweeteners, microbes, enzymes, oils and fats.”
I wouldn’t trust an ‘organic’ version of a conventional product made by the company. If you look at the ingredients, I am certain you will see some unnatural and processed (which means GMO) ingredient – no matter how small.
      Please educate YOURSELF.

    2. What you are stating is not fact! Unless you purchase organic corn it is GMO which means it’s been sprayed with glyphosate only a short time before it’s harvested. There are many products on the market, in grocery stores that are made with GMO corn which also used as a filler in processed foods.

      1. What you are stating is absolutely not a fact either. GMO corn is not sprayed with glyphosate only a short time before it’s harvested. Corn gets to be 10-12 ft. tall by harvest time. It cannot be sprayed effectively right before harvest. Weed control in corn takes place months before it is harvested.

    3. Yes the organic version is much better, but unfortunately that’s not always available.

  3. I was literally hooked on Doritos, I ate them all of the time, could not stop, that was my go snack and I ate a lot at one sitting.
I finally decided to make a change and went plant based as much as possible.
I make my own tortilla chips in the oven or air fryer. It has been over three years since I had Doritos. Had I known the truth about Doritos sooner I would have kicked the habit long ago.

  4. I was literally just thinking I’ve got to figure this one out! I had switched to getting Late July chips when my kids ask for doritos. However, they are pricey and I’m VERY concerned about the seed oils. The SEED oils are literally driving me nuts. It is literally in all of the prepackaged organic foods. What is worse, glyphosates or seed oils. Uggggg! Thank you for the recipe! I’ll try it soon!

  5. Is there anything else to replace buttermilk powder? It’s not something we normally have around or tend to use much.

  6. Hi there! I was wondering what corn tortillas you would suggest that are not enriched or fortified ? We just learned we have to go completely unprocessed on our meal plans here and I am at a complete loss. Just purchased your recent book, and hoping to really learn a lot about cleaner eating. I feel like we always ate healthy, but, now realizing it was a lot of enriched (protein pastas, example) items that we need to stop. Appreciate your help!
